Leonardo Da Vinci was born in Anchiano, Tuscany in 1452. Da Vinci was a painter and an inventor. He is known mostly for his art today. Two of the most famous paintings in the world are The Last Supper and Mona Lisa, which he painted. Da Vinci's father was the only one who admired his artistic work and at 15 asked painter Andrea del Verrocchio if he could train Da Vinci. Da Vinci stayed under Verrocchio for about a decade, and then went out on his own in 1478. In 1482 he painted his first piece, The Adoration of the Magi, but never finished it because he moved to Milan to work under Sforza clan, serving as an engineer, painter, architect, and a sculptor. Another name for this painting is The Virgin of the Rocks. There are actually two of these paintings that look very similar. Both paintings represent the same subject, but there are two different details. Both paintings show Madonna and Christ Child with John the Baptist, and an angel, near rocks, which is where the name comes from. The main differences are in the right hand of the angel and the gaze. There are also many minor differences in the painting. The colors, lighting, flora, and the way sfumato was used are all different. The first record of this painting is in 1625, when it was in the French royal collection. It is thought that this painting was made to fulfill a commission of 1483 in Milan. It is said that this painting was privately sold by Leonardo and that the London version was painted at a later date to fill the commission. The other painting that looks very familiar, is in the National Gallery in London. It is thought that this was painted before 1508. Art historians originally believed that Da Vinci's assistants painted this one, but the study of the most recent restoration make them believe that the greater part of the painting is done by Da Vinci.
