Before reading the novel or watching the television show The Handmaid’s Tale I was unsure what to expect, as I read reviews on the novel by Margaret Atwood I became excited to read a book that was out of my comfort zone. I have never been into reading a book continuously because I usually lose interest, but it was different with this novel and television series. With that being said the novel is great because it allows the reader to be put into the setting of a handmaid. I also believe that the television series does a great job of representing the book. I became hooked onto the series, and I often think about the thematic questions we talked about in class because it all correlates. One difference is the ceremony the handmaid’s, martha’s and econwives attended before the handmaid’s got with their commanders. During the ceremony the novel mentions that the aunts killed two handmaids and one econwife because they disobeyed the laws. In the television show, the handmaid’s, martha’s and econwives meet up to kill a guardian that had raped a handmaid. The women beat the man to death, which wasn’t even mentioned in the novel at all. Another difference that is noticeable within the novel and series is how Moira escaped. From my understanding in the novel, Moira was a single act. Moira was able to gain the attention of an aunt and stab her in the stomach after trading outfits so she could leave Gilead. In the series Moira flooded a toilet and Offred called for attention. After she caught an aunt’s attention, they made the aunt follow the handmaids to the basement where she was stripped of her clothing and tied to a pole, without being harmed. Offred played a major part in the escaping of Moira which is an act of resistance, she left Gilead with Moira and went to the brick wall that had many bodies being hanged on the wall. When they got to the train station, Moira was able to get on a subway and escape while Offred got caught by the guards and had her feet whipped so it was impossible for her to walk on them without being in tremendous
