When it comes to Shakespeare, if one asks a young adult with which play they are most familiar, the answer is likely to be Romeo and Juliet. As the play unfolds, readers learn of two families, the Montagues and the Capulets who are mortal enemies. A young Juliet Capulet is smitten for Romeo Montague. While their love is forbidden, they are determined to go to the greatest extent to make their relationship work, including dying together in the name of love. Many adaptations of Shakespeare’s popular play have been done, and they have different target audiences. Instead of taking place in Italy, the film was shot in Mexico City. Instead of swords being used as weaponry, the characters packed pistols and their choice of transportation becomes limousines. In the film, the characters are different as well. Our friend Mercutio turns out to be a cross dresser and The Friar started the trends of large back tattoos before they even became a trend by showing off his enormously large tattoo of the crucifix. Back in the day when MTV and VH1 actually had a consistent focus on music, one often said that portions of the film resonated with young people extremely well due to all of the wonderful editing effects alluding to being formatted like a music video would be. Luhrmann did an excellent job at connecting with the youth of America. In addition, the film served as a cautionary tale in regards to making important and appropriate decisions in one’s life, such growing slow to anger, and not committing to a relationship too quickly. Having the opportunity to participate in Point Park University’s Poetry Connection, I had the opportunity to speak with some fourth graders from the Environmental Charter School located in Pittsburgh, PA. A young man named Diezl shared with me that they at the ages they were, were already studying Shakespeare! It is important to incorporate a form of higher-education form of literacy into a child’s life whether it be through literature, or through film.
Directed by Kelly Asbury, the film Gnomeo and Juliet was released in 2011. In this box office hit, the rival enemies are blue and red garden gnomes. The blue garden gnome is a representation of the Montagues who live at 2B. Next door resides the red garden gnome representative of the Capulets, at well not 2B.
