Point Guards and Quarterbacks
From soccer to football and baseball to basketball, each sport has its one valuable position. This one position is essential for the team’s victories. The player to fill this role must not only be a decisive leader but a skillful player as well. This spot requires hard work and dedication which in turn provides teammates with a satisfying example and contributes to the team’s victories. Not any player is capable of fulfilling these requirements so certain precautions should be taken when fulfilling these roles. Two complementary positions from two varying sports are the basketball point guard and football quarterback. Although their origins are from

two distinct sports, the point guard and quarterback positions are the most pivotal in their respective sports.
Despite the varying demands each sport has, preparation for football and basketball essentially utilizes identical plans. In the offseason, the two positions spend the majority of their time working out and preparing for the upcoming season. There are a diverse number of approaches and techniques to prepare for the future, but players generally take on indistinguishable plans. A very important part of preparing for the next season is to work out muscles. However workouts can not be inconsistent and easy, it is essential for all workouts to be persistent and intense; they must also include all muscles in the body. In addition to increasing muscles, endurance and stamina must also be heightened. Running in general is the most preferred way to increase stamina. Players from these positions also spend a great deal of time going over old plays and learning to execute new ones. The precision of a play is mandatory for professional sports. acquainted with new players that have been picked up over the course of the offseason, as team chemistry plays a huge role when it comes to winning games. In addition to these core work outs, the quarterback and point guard work on some select detail skills as well. These positions must work on developing exceptional passing skills and creating plays for their teammates and themselves. The point guard must learn to be quick at driving the lane and being able to shoot a fairly high percentage. On the contrary, the only major physical skill a quarterback has to work on is to pass accurately, as quickness is not necessarily a required trait in quarterbacks. Although the indicated positions are from distinctive sports, the offseason workouts tend to increase muscle mass and stamina combined with the practice of passing skills makes the two very identical. Although essential concepts are required for each position, the type of play varies. For example, as previously mentioned, the point guard and quarterback must be able to pass precisely and accurately. However, a point guard focuses on other skills such as dribbling, shooting, and defense, along with passing. On the contrary, a quarterback’s main goal is to stay in one place and pass the ball to a teammate. While a point guard has the option to create plays for himself as well as for others, a quarterback is mostly required to make plays for his teammates. Rather than singlehandedly eluding defenders as a point guard does, a quarterback generally stays behind his linemen to complete the perfect pass. Additionally, the point guard position values an athletic ability more than a quarterback when playing due to the type of play they are required to compose. For example, the point guard is usually the most petite player on the court, so they rely on their strength, quickness, and agility to finish with contact, and still succeeding a play when being guarded aggressively. Conversely, the quarterback doesn’t need to rely on these abilities as much because of the athletic ability of his teammates. Despite these discrepancies , the game play of a quarterback and point guard is quite related. This resemblance presents itself in the general play of the two positions. The quarterbacks and point guards orchestrate their team and generally call which play to use. These people must create the perfect play and be able to deliver in high stress situations. In addition, they use their keen eyesight to observe the field and deliver the ball to their teammates. These positions are decision makers; they determine who gets the ball, what play to call, and when to execute that play. Because of their value and their general resemblances in passing and creating plays, it is evident that the point guard and quarterback positions require relative elemental concepts, but exhibit different characteristics when doing so. As role models for their team, the quarterback and point guard have a strong influence as leaders.
Since the positions tend to call which play to execute on offense, they are expected to keep a clear mind and deliver in critical situations. It is this focus and effort that causes other players to develop respect for them. Nevertheless, the two players earn respect in distant ways. The quarterback most likely earns the respect of his teammates through his passing abilities. The point guard, however, can get respect through a variety of skills such as shooting, passing, and decision-making. In team the point guard and the quarterback are the most prevalent voices encouraging and criticizing the team. Furthermore, they back up what they tell their teammates. Instead of just yelling at the team or explaining to them what to do, the point guard or quarterback will actually go out on the field/court and show the team how to do it. They not only set examples on the court, but off the court as well. Their leadership continues on from the arena into the locker room and even extends to media image as well as everyday life. By holding charity events, eating healthy, and staying away from drugs, these players set examples for their teammates, which is why they are deemed “role models”. It is this mature leadership that brings together the character of the quarterback and point
guard. Despite two apparent backgrounds of the two distant sports, the quarterback and point guard positions are evenly central to the effective functioning of a sports team. Not only are the preparation methods related for the two positions, but they also use equivalent key concepts to play the game; they work out and fine tune passing skills and decision making abilities to better their own game as well as their team’s. In addition, these two players are generally the leaders of their team. They are the voice of motivation and criticism and set the example of how to play the game from tip-off or kickball. Rather than yelling at their team about mistakes, they go out on the court and show how to correctly play the game. These skills, preparation, determination, passion, and leadership defines the reason these players are the most pivotal in their games.

Willie Mays once said “In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without one-hundred percent dedication, you won't be able to do this” In order to succeed it’s required to put everything on the line to survive in the world of sports. Without devoting to sports there is no correct path to success. Nobody will be on the level of competition. Dedication also comes into play where people will need to be better in other areas. First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...

In football, many people consider the quarterback as the most important and influential position on the field. Although there are other players who are competing, none of them individually can cause as much success or stress as the quarterback. Not all quarterbacks play the position the same way. Some are stationary in the pocket and others are able to escape pass rushers. There exist five groups that combine physical talent and pass delivery that quarterbacks can be categorized in: they are pocket passers, mobile-passers, scramblers, gunslingers and game-managers.
Soccer is a sport that is all about motion and how to use movements most effectively. Speed and velocity are very important when it comes to motion because with out them there would be no motion. When playing soccer speed is essential to being a productive player. The game is fast paced and so the players must also be quick on their feet. Creative new training methods, developed by coaches, athletes and sport scientists, are aimed to help improve the quality and quantity of athletic training ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). However, these methods have encountered a consistent set of barriers including overtraining ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). While playing point guard in basketball you have to stay calm and collected. Whether it’s badgering defenders hanging all over you or keeping your team relaxed when losing a nail biter late in the game, you need composure to be a successful point guard. Working as an elevator mechanic requires this same poise when things aren’t going your way on a job or when customers complain. Playing point guard in basketball and working as an elevator mechanic present similar challenges by working cooperatively with others and knowing how to handle tough situations with composure.
It is used in basketball for driving and gaining enough power to shoot the ball in the hoop. Driving is needed when you either need to get the ball or when you are trying to attack the hoop and score a goal. It is when you will wait and run into space to get the ball, instead of running straight away because else your partner will just follow you. Muscular strength is important because it will improve your performance on the basketball court. Effective basketball players work extremely hard to develop the type of muscle strength needed to build up the endurance and stamina needed to successfully compete at a high level.
