Unfortunately in today's world we still hear about men who batter their women. These men, according to two psychology professors from the University of Washington, are divided into two different types: pit bulls and cobras. Pit bulls and cobras have both similar and different characteristics. The separation between those two types is important for the development of more effective treatment programs and the efforts of preventing domestic violence.

Pit bulls and cobras are similar in a few ways. The mainly and most obvious similarity is the violence they use towards their women. Additionally, in both types, pit bulls and cobras, the battering will most likely never stop on its own. As the two professors,

Conversely, we can see many differences between pit bulls and cobras. Just by looking back at their history we can already find some of those differences. Pit bulls often had fathers who battered their mothers while cobras, on the other hand, often had violent, traumatic childhoods, criminal records, and a personal history of alcohol and drug abuse. Furthermore, although pit bulls are easier to leave than cobras, in the long term, they might kill their women, while cobras will go on looking for their new victims.
In conclusion, in addition to the necessity of knowing how to characterize the two different types of batterers, it's important to increase awareness of domestic violence. Authorities should provide different programs for battered women to help them overcome what they experienced, provide the support they need and encourage them to report to the authorities henceforth.
