Cassidy Craddick HUM 120-005 Professor Hart Compare and Contrast "O Brother, Where Art Thou" by the Coen brothers is a very clever way to interpret the Greek myth the “Odyssey" by Homer. A person may not even realize the connections between the two until they find out they are related. Almost every event and character seen throughout the movie can be related back to an event or character from the “Odyssey”, from the first scene to the last. The similarities between "O Brother, Where Art Thou" and "The Odyssey" range from obvious to obscure. First, the main characters in "O Brother, Where Are Thou" is Ulysses Everett McGill and his crew Pete Hogwallop and Delmar O'Donnell. Everett represents Odysseus in almost every way possible. First, Ulysses is the Latin form for the name Odysseus. Also, both Everett and Odysseus had to go through many trials and obstacles so that they could get home to their families. In the film Everett is trying to get back to his wife “Penny” which is a shortened version for the name “Penelope” who is Odysseus’ wife. Furthermore, both Odysseus and Everett use their quick wits and deceptions to get out of tight situations. Then, in the Odyssey Odysseus also had a crew that accompanied him on his journey. Pete and Delmar represent the crew in the film. The very first scene that takes place shows Everett and his crew escaping from jail, this can be compared to when Odysseus escapes from Calypso and other monsters. After they escape they first meet a railroad homeless man who is blind and tells them they will not seek their treasure. This man represents Teiresias who is a blind fortune teller in the Odyssey. Furthermore, as the movie goes on Everett and his crew continue to meet new people along t... ... middle of paper ... ...t home to his family more challenging. The water flooding the home and land can be compared to Poseidon since he is the God of water. Overall in the end both stories end with Everett/Odysseus getting his wife back and continuing their lives as they had planned. In conclusion, the film “O Brother, Where Art Thou” by the Coen brothers and the “Odyssey” by Homer are very interesting works to compare to one another. Some events can be loosely interpreted while others are very obvious. The film is a very fascinating and entertaining way to see the “Odyssey”, and makes a person see it in a whole new way. The movie can make a person realize how the Greek myths can actually be compared to real life situations and events that people face. It was a great interpretation of the “Odyssey” and both the film and the book the “Odyssey” are very entertaining and powerful stories.
