Karissa Harms Octopus vs. Squid In my opinion, I think octopuses are better than squids even though they may not seem that different. Actually, they are quite different. For one thing is how they look. Octopi have round shape heads versus squids who have more of a diamond are a triangular shaped head with two fins on each side. Also, squids have two tentacles attached to them to help them catch food but octopus does not have those. Even on the inside, they are different. Squids have a backbone which is called a pen and octopus do not have any type of backbone. Octopi live in deep dens so they aren’t seen as easy as squids that live in open waters. That means you will more likely see the scary creatures. Also, squids can get
“Tentacles” by Roland Smith is the second novel in the “Cryptid Hunters” series and was released in 2009. Uncle Wolfe 's latest project is to go to New Zealand to find a giant squid, and the gigantic freighter he has rented for the trip may just be haunted. Someone on the trip is determined to sabotage their trip. Grace and Marty may just be the next victims, if they keep poking their noses into things.
Being who you are is easier said than done. We all have heard this lesson before, but it is much harder to actually do this in front of friends, and relatives. In “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan, and “Taco Head” by Viola Canales, both narrators face the struggle to fit in. They come from smaller cultures rather than the larger American culture. In the end, both girls learn a valuable lesson to be independent, and to be proud of who you are. In “Fish Cheeks” and “Taco Head” the similar lessons the narrators learn is, to be proud of who you are. However, the stories are different because in “Fish Cheeks” being American on the outside is okay, but you must remain Chinese on the inside. In “Taco Head” the lesson teaches that
Cephalopods are known to be exceptionally intelligent by invertebrate standards and in some respects even rival “higher” vertebrates. These animals have many highly evolved sensory and processing organs that allow them to gain a greater understanding of their environment and their place within it. Due to their advanced structures, many of which are analogous to vertebrate structures, and abilities they have been widely studied. Their methods of learning have been of prime interest and many experiments have been conducted to determine the different ways in which octopuses can learn. From these experiments four main kinds of learning have been identified in octopuses: associative learning, special learning,
"Consider the Lobster" an issue of Gourmet magazine, this reviews the 2003 Maine Lobster Festival. The essay is concerned with the ethics of boiling a creature alive in order to enhance the consumer's pleasure. The author David Foster Wallace of "Consider the Lobster” was an award-winning American novelist. Wallace wrote "Consider the Lobster” but not for the intended audience of gourmet readers .The purpose of the article to informal reader of the good thing Maine Lobster Festival had to offer. However, he turn it into question moral aspects of boiling lobsters.
Family therapy is often needed when families go through transitions such as separations between parents and divorce. According to research, “the power of family therapy derives from bringing parents and children together to transform their interactions” (Nichols, & Davis, p.18), as problems need to be addressed at their source. The children who are the most vulnerable, when parents decide to separate, exhibit symptoms which are exaggerations of their parent’s problems (Nichols, & Davis, p.18). Frank and Walt Berkman are the examples of how children cope and adapt to the stressors of family separations such as marital separations and
The outer tentacles probe for a potential meal, then the inner sensors decide if the prey is edible. They are covered in thick, blackish-brown, water-repellent fur, and have large scaled feet and a long, thick tail. This animal is by far one of the most interesting animals in the world, despite looking like a cross between a rat and an octopus. The way it behaves and utilizes its star nose is fascinating and makes it very unique when compared to other animals.
From a crab to a barnacle, crustaceans are a diverse group of animals that inhabit much of the world. This lesson will explore what it means to be a crustacean and will also provide some example organisms.
Aquariums are a great place to learn about the ocean and its habitats. From the bottom of the food webs to the preservations of the environments within, aquariums give people of all ages a hands-on experience and first-look at the mysteries of the ocean. Both the coral reef and the deep sea, though not well known among the general public, is presented in a way that sparks interest, showing the biodiversity in the waters below.
Throughout time we’ve come to terms on different versions of stories that have been altered to fit what we want to read or see for our enjoyment. Having variations of a story can demonstrate what type of audience is in the sight of the creator. The term “disneyfication” is the word to describe the idea of turning a story into a modern day version that creates an illusion to the real story written before. This has happened several times in past decades, where stories are altered to set an example for the audience, whether it’s believing in oneself or getting the job done, to get what you want, is different from the original tale. The comparison between Hans Christian Andersen “The Little Mermaid” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” are a set
In both Hans Christian Andersons “The Little Mermaid,” and Disney’s version of the story, the main character— a young and beautiful mermaid— waits anxiously for her fifteenth birthday to venture from her father’s underwater castle to the world above the water. As the story carries on the mermaids priorities change; her modest and selfless nature is revealed towards the end in Andersen’s version. However, Disney’s version encompasses a rather shallow ending and plot throughout. The theme found in comparing the two versions reveal that Andersen’s substance trumps Disney’s entertainment factor in fairy tales.
What they do is produce light (bioluminescence) that helps the squid camouflage itself at night. The squid has a special way of sensing how much moonlight is coming down, and then using a shutter, can control how much light comes out. This makes the squid not cast a shadow, making it harder for predators and prey to see it. During the day, the squid pumps out the dead bacteria, and the process starts again. What her team did was look at how these bacteria produced their light. When they were in a dilute solution with very few bacteria, then they did not produce light. But when there were many bacteria, they did produce light. The reason this happened is because the bacteria produce these chemical messengers called Quorums, which help the bacteria know how much of them there
From a succulent fresh lobster tail to a mouth-watering red snapper filet, everyone loves some type of seafood. The residents of our city are lucky, restaurants specializing in seafood are plentiful. Many locals consider Pappadeux and Joe's Crab Shack to be the best. Although they both serve wonderful, fresh seafood, the differences in the menu, the service, and the overall atmosphere set them apart from one another.
Soft corals are grouped in the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, and order Alcyonacea. Their distinguishing characteristic is that their polyps always bear eight tentacles which are on both edges fringed by rows of pinnules (Fabricius and De’ath, 2002). The common name “soft coral” comes from the fact that they have no massive external skeleton as compared to the more commonly studied hard corals.
The day has come in my household where poles are being taken for the next family member. After careful consideration, my family and I have narrowed down the new family member to be either a dog or a fish. At first glance, I thought these two animals to be on completely opposite ends of the spectrum of pets, and after careful consideration, dogs and fish have a good bit of similarities and differences. Both animals need to be fed daily and kept in a clean environment. However, these differences will be the determining factors as to which new family member wins. The differences in dogs and fish are found within their habitat, interaction, and levels of activity.
This picture is a picture showing where your vertebrates are and your octopus. They show different kinds of blinds spots such as: cephalopod eyes. Cephalopod eyes are where the optic nerve approaches the receptors from behind the eye. This creates vertebrate eyes where nerve fibers block light creating a blind spot. The octopus eyes are where the nerve fibers completely block the light from the retina. Now that you have learned how our eyes work, and everything about our eyes, you are now considered an expert!
