Textbook reading and reading for pleasure are very different, in the sense that reading for pleasure does not required to take what is being read and use it to educate on a particular subject. Ones methods and styles have to change in learning and retaining the information while understanding what is being read. Reading actively requires four steps in order to prepare for writing papers, research, tests and exams these are; previewing, strategizing, concentrating, and reviewing. Everyone will develop their own reading and studying habits, these steps are just the guideline in order to enhance success. These active reading strategies need to be in place to get the most out the information that is being read. Trying to find out what to plan, such as hotels, place to visit, or even restaurants in advance, so that there is an awareness of what to expect and what other information needs to be obtained. Previewing a textbook accomplishes much the same. The main purpose of previewing is to link what is being read to what one already knows and on what is being taught. Accomplishing this requires several steps. Reading the introduction paragraph quickly for the chapter gives a basic idea of what is being discussed. While skimming through the chapter look for italicized words, bold face, and subtitles are set up this way because they highlight the essential topic on what is being explained. In one of my first courses at Middlesex Community College, I had a professor who inspired me, just like Alexie’s father inspired him, and Bimbi inspired Malcolm. My professor could tell I was unable to understand a lot of the words in our history text book. Without knowing what you are reading, there is no way you can understand events throughout history through a textbook. My professor encouraged me to write down every word I did not understand and define it in a notebook. By the end of my semester I had almost a full notebook of new words and an A in my course. With the inspiration of my professor, I was able to expand my vocabulary, and gain a stronger grasp on what I was learning. I have used this method in almost all of my classes since, and it has always worked to my advantage. The power of literature and knowledge truly can take you further in life.

We build ourselves out of that story.” This quote is said by Patrick Rothfuss. In the book, True Notebooks, by Mark Salzman his students tell you many stories that people get to become apart of. Reading stories by other people makes their life more interesting. The power of storytelling is really important, because they have to catch your attention to make you want to hear more. Three stories from the book, True Notebooks, that suck out to me were: “The G Ride”, “Another Screw Up”, and a story without a title by Dale.
The more effort we use in studying the better results we will get. Certain people have a hard time comprehending school work from the first grade to throughout high school. For example, in the article “Saved,” the life of Malcolm X, the reader is told about Malcolm’s struggle with learning .One problem he had was he couldn’t write or read his own hand writing. The way he began to overcome his handicap was that he would copy and memorize words from the dictionary. When he entered prison he was illiterate. He could neither read nor write. Later on, to help his reading comprehension, he would spend time in the prison library. Spending an hour every day in the library helped to increase his comprehension.
I find it easier expressing myself through words and understanding other individual 's thoughts and actions through speech and writing. By studying a piece of text I am able to retrieve a lot of relevant information from it, I find this an easy way to learn because I reflect back by making notes so I am able to look back on notes for situations such as assignments and revision for exams. This is why I find reading techniques such as skim and scan reading difficult because I need to read a piece of text, highlight the important information and make notes to ensure that I have gained a good understanding. I could possibly improve an approach for my reading by looking at step by step guides to skim and scan reading online. This could help for large amounts of reading which I have to read quickly in seminars and lectures and to draw only the important information
Textbooks are essential and informative, however it is not the main core value of education. If we truly depend on textbook, our world would be as naïve as natives in colonization era. Schopenhauer provides the difference between reading and thinking. “Reading forcibly imposes on the mind thoughts that are as foreign to its mood and direction” (Schopenhauer, pg. 89) Reading is an escape of reality. It penetrates the mind and alters thinking. “The mind is totally subjected to an external compulsion” (Schopenhauer, pg.89) although reading is prominent, it can impair personal thinking. “That the surest way of never having any thoughts of your own is to pickup a book every time you have a free moment.” (Schopenhauer, pg. 90) When it comes to reading college content, it has no originality. We are attaining our foreign thinking from a text that has been modified thus teach one purpose only and that is to provide facts. We cannot attain wisdom from textbooks. Universities provide textbooks that are a copy of another copy; that is to say, the information is the production of somebodies else’s idea following by, another mans ideas and so on. “All that has ever been taught is a critique of a words and fifty critiques of them as preserved side-by-side and intermingled” (Nietzsche, pg. 187) What can we obtain from a mixtures of words? To be a college reader, there are several things that we need to know, and to be prepared before we read. Number one priority of being a successful college reader is we need to know the vocabulary. If we do not know the vocabulary, we can not fully understand of the contents and that will affect really big for us because it also could break the rhetorical triangle. In addition, paraphrasing is another important as a college reader, and of course the vocabulary is the basic steps of paraphrasing. Basically, paraphrasing means is that we have to explain the contents just using our own word and own thoughts. If we could not fully understand the meaning of the contents, we can not paraphrase the text. For example, I paraphrased one of paragraph in ‘Idiot Nation’ by Michael Moore in class, but then I was stuck because of the vocabulary. Going into this course, I felt that the reading and writing skills I learned in high school were very beneficial in preparing me for an English college course. In high school, I was enrolled in GATE and AP English courses. In these classes, I was assigned several readings and was taught to actively read by doing annotations. I was to summarize the writer 's main points, to write down my own opinions, or to connect it to any personal experiences. These annotations helped me understand the writer 's message better because I was able to break down the things the writer said and only focused on the important points. Then, I was also able to form my own opinion on that topic by deciding whether I agreed or disagreed with the author’s opinion. Moreover, I used evidence from the text to support my argument.
