North vs. South: Political Cartoon, “Punch, or the London Charivari” May 18, 1861 The political cartoon centers on the issues of the Civil War. The cartoon contains two gladiators, with a crowd of blacks and a main black man who is seated on a throne, he is Fredrick Douglas. The crowd of Blacks are watching the fight on bales of cotton, emphasizing the importance of the cotton plantation in the South. The two gladiators portray the rivalry between the North (gladiator on the left) and South (gladiator on the right). Prior to the Civil War the North and the South had many disagreements pertaining to taxes, and federal rights versus state rights. One of the main factors leading to the Civil War was the argument of how a country should be governed. During the Civil War, we know that Fredrick Douglas was a crucial figure who fought for emancipation; overall this political cartoon demonstrates different political views and emphasizes that the North and the South could not agree. Lincoln believed that slavery should not be allowed, but Douglas believed that each state should be allowed to make its own decision on whether slavery should be allowable or not. However, with 18 Free states and 15 Free states it was affirmative that the nation no longer sought after any compromise, Lincoln wanted all Free states. With Lincoln in power the South had to take a plan of action; South Carolina became the first state to become independent from the union.
