The Pledge of Allegiance was not always delivered with the right hand placed over the heart. Until the Flag Code was amended in December of 1942 by Congress, the Pledge of Allegiance was traditionally recited with the right hand extended, palm down, towards the Flag. This salute, called the Bellamy Salute, was named after Francis J. Bellamy, a socialist minister (Ctoncourse). Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance at the request of Daniel Sharp Ford. Ford, in 1892, started a campaign to place American flags “in every classroom in the nation” with the belief that the public show of patriotism would help the nation recover from the looming memory of the Civil War by uniting people through their national identity. The Bellamy Salute was intended to be a physical, non-military style salute. It was …show more content…
Patriotism, as defined by sociology, is the “love and commitment to one’s country. The sociological definition for nationalism, however, is “a sense of superiority over others” (Kemmelmeier 859). Compared to nationalism, patriotism is benign in definition. With nationalism, there is “them” and then there is “us”; in essence, it creates a strong schism between nations. Radical nationalism is a severe issue as it has high potential in causing conflicts between nations. One of the most notorious examples from history is World War II. Following World War I, Germany was in shambles; the economic and political state of Germany left it vulnerable to the rise of Adolf Hitler. The bitter resentment resulting from the conclusion of World War I in combination with a new, jingoist dictator led to the creation of radical nationalism within Germany. This nationalism led to the willingness to kill indiscriminately for the country under the belief that Germany was a far superior nation and all other nations needed to be eradicated, thus leading to global
Germany. Nationalism is a complex concept that can be viewed as both a unifying and a disunifying force, depending on one's perspective and background knowledge. On one hand, it can bring people together who share a common bond based on a single "nationality" or ancestry. Those who view nationalism as a unifying force often reject loyalty to a monarch, instead choosing to remain loyal to their fellow citizens. On the other hand, some people see nationalism as a disunifying force because it can disrupt efforts to restore the old order before the French Revolution.
Nationalism is when a country feels superior to other countries. Nationalism helped lead the World War 1 because it made countries and people feel superior which makes them want to prove their superiority by fighting. Archduke Franz was a German, a person who felt superior to others which caused the Slavic nationalists to dislike him since he was German and Archduke was killed by the Slavs. In Document B, a cartoon artwork is shown by John T. McCutcheon, which was published eight days after war broke out (August 5, 1914). The cartoon is titled, “The Crime of Ages,” shows England, Belgium, Russia, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Serbia is pointing at each other which resembles the World War 1, the peace of Europe, and whose sighting with who.
Nationalism was coined back in the 1770’s it has a major role in the shaping many nations throughout the world. Nationalism has many positive and negative aspects to it. Nationalism has the strength to unify people despite their classes. It also has the ability to united people to lead movements against oppressive governments. There is a downside Nationalism can as method to evoke fear. The biggest negative is that most nationalism movement’s inevitably led to some form of conflict. Nationalism is generally characterized as the feeling of loyalty shared by a gathering of individuals joined by race, dialect, and society. It is a more grounded conviction than patriotism, the feeling of loyalty towards our country, since it is a belief that shares qualities of an individual which are important, that need to be protected by the creation and support of a nation state. In regards to the German Unification which was created between 1864 and 1871, historians have regularly depicted the procedures as the results of nationalism. Nonetheless, I personally believe that nationalism had just an element in contributing towards the eventual unification, whereas different elements, for example, the position of Otto von Bismarck, the quality
Nationalism, just like pride can be a deadly sin. It truly shows how deadly it can be at the beginning stages of world war 1. People began believe that dying for their country shows how great of a country they are. This is happened to Germany. In the movie All Quiet On The Western Front you can see how pride the kids are to go to war for their country but for all the wrong reasons. Nationalism would also be considered a form a racism. So you can see how hating another country for not being your country can...
World War I, also known as “The Great War”, was a global war that revolved mainly around Europe. It took place from 1914 to 1918. This was a very brutal war that caused many casualties. The soldiers who survived experienced severe trauma and mental discomfort. This trauma was a direct result of the violence and agony they experienced during the war. Motivation for this war was the idea of nationalism and the pride in one’s country. This war was the cause of disillusionment among many of the soldiers that were involved in it.
Nationalism is great for a country ("Nationalism”). It provides a confidence and sense of togetherness that ever country should have. Nationalism is defined as having patriotic feelings toward their country (“Nationalism). People are able to show their love for their country by reciting their national anthems, pledge of allegiance, and spreading positive thoughts of their country ("Nationalism”). There are extreme nationalists as well, which can cause serious problems ("Nationalism). Sometimes nationalists take their pride to far and it turns into an evil downwards spiral. Take Adolf Hitler for example, he ended up killing six million Jews and was at the center of the foundation of Nazism. Extreme nationalists can end up hurting innocent people because they might not believe in the same things or for absolutely no reason at all. The other end of extreme nationalists would be the people that are harmed because of being huge nationalists for their country. There are groups of people whose jobs are to go after nationalists from other countries because they may potentially cause a threat to their own country. In general nationalism is a great trait for a country to possess, but certain situations and people can cause nationalism to become a deadly weapon. Although nationalism has its benefits with international pride, in extreme cases it could lead to the downfall of a country or strip innocents of their safety.
There are two countries that flourish due to Nationalism, Germany and Italy. The creation of Germany was possible through nationalism. Nationalism brought German community to unify and create a nation. On the other hand, the rivalry of the great powers to control other territories grew more as countries were wanting to influence past their borders. “The great powers had come into conflict over spheres of influence in China and over territories in Africa, and the Eastern Question, created by the decline of the Ottoman Empire, had produced several disturbing controversies.”(“World War I” 2015) Militarism was another aspect of these ideologies where countries would increase military spending to get new weapons and increase the military size. This gave people the idea that war was the only solution to their problems and also intensified nationalism because it increased their confidence in the military, thinking their country could win any battle against any foe. “Imperialist and nationalist, resulted in a hardening of alliance systems in the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente and in a general armaments race.(“World War I”
The rise of European nationalism in the 19th Century brought with it an overabundance amount of change that would definitively modify the course of history. The rise of nationalism in one country would rouse greater nationalism in another, which would in turn, motivate even greater nationalism in the first, progressively intensifying the cycle that eventually concluded in a World War. Nationalism as an ideology produced international competition which inspired absolute allegiance to an individual’s nation state. The ideology was fueled by industrial commerce and imperialistic developments which led to nation-states pursuits of outcompeting rival nations.
Nationalism means is a country that feels they have superiority over other countries. In document one, a British imperial poet talks about how citizens should praise their own country, and that nationalism is for the greater cause of the country. In document 6, Count Cavour, explains “The history of every age proves that no people can attain a high degree of intelligence and morality unless its feeling of nationality is strongly developed.” As nationalism was growing in Europe, it gave many citizens in different countries confidence for their military strength, and government. Also, many countries wanted to industrialize. With countries having confidence with themselves, European countries grew their basic needs, military and
Nationalism, the love and support of one's country, has always existed. In this era, however, it was to take part in the creation of one of the most famous wars in history. Since so much pride was devoted to countries, it made the possibilities of peace between past rivals less probable. It also meant that most nations, especially the great powers, would rather fight a war than back down from a rival's diplomatic provocation. In effect, nationalism was also a contributing factor to the alliance system. No country feels comfortable being in a war alone, and with the growing militaries in almost every country, allies provided much comfort.
Nationalism is being patriotic towards one’s own country. It took place in the nineteenth century to those people who shared a language, history and culture. Nationalism led to creation of new powers, which are Italy and Germany. As these countries became united and stronger, they created war against other countries.
The changes that we have recently experienced at the global level, this new era of globalization, has made the entire peoples relive the feelings of nationalism, unfortunately in a wrong way. Because of leaders with the coveted power, these feelings of nationalism have been conducted through the anger, hatred, intolerance, and violence.
The definition of nationalism, according to Anderson, is an “imagined impersonal community, defined by common history and perceived by distinctiveness, that is believed to exercise the collective right to sovereign control over a given territory.” Over the last 200 years, the United States has grown larger and stronger with every change, and with that, the understanding of nationhood and nationalism in the US has changed within the constraints of this definition. In the beginning, nationhood was very different. It was elite driven. The united states was built on immigrants brought together with the idea of building a free nation. This could be described by the elite theory, which states that elites are aspiring to nationalism and lead the movements.
Early America was a time where many events and things brought them either, to come together or separate. Nationalism and sectionalism are two words with the opposite meanings.Nationalism is when a Nation comes together and thinks about the profits for the whole country and its people. Sectionalism is when a nation is separated into different parts and go on their own. The North and the South disagreed on what should be done about slavery. The North is against the idea of owning African slaves. The south, on the other hand, believed that Africans were born to be slaves and were meant to work for them. During the Industrial Revolution in the North, the nation began to create machines that made work easier, but also brought problems and more people to the North due to the offers about the payments. At the same time in the South, more slaves were being purchased because of fo the increasing production of cotton. While the North offered to pay jobs and even opened up to the idea of working women, the south took away freedom from Africans so they could work as slaves. Early America was a time of Sectionalism because of slavery in the South, and the Industries in the North.
