“Recently Spotted 103-Year-Old Orca is Bad News for SeaWorld – Here’s Why” is just one example of an attention grabbing headline. These types of headlines draw me in and make me click on the link. I would describe myself as someone who easily gets drawn into these links and makes the curious side of me come out. This curiosity is how I would describe my leisure time reading, but most of the time I would compare my reading habits to household chores. I make this comparison due to the fact that most people do not enjoy household chores, but they must complete them to either avoid living in filth or to avoid being nagged by your parents, siblings or spouse. The comparison relates to my reading habits because a majority of the time I am being forced to read for such things as school. I complete these readings, not because I enjoy it, but because I want good grades in the same sense that I complete household chores to please those around me. The way that I approach reading and household chores is the same, which is why the avatar fits my reading character perfectly. My approach to reading is that it is a chore. It is something that has to be done to satisfy others. Personally, I am a semi-procrastinator, in which I do not wait until the last day to complete a task, but I wait until a couple days before it is due to start working on it. Social media is everywhere and the world is very complex is you are not interested in any form of reading. My participation in reading is heavily on the social media side. The main things that I read are from social media and my general knowledge of the world also comes from the previously stated sites. The participation in required reading is not as strong but it is still there because I feel required to do it, just as I would a household
If you had the choice between your phone and a book,you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
In a world dominated by technology, reading novels has become dull. Instead of immersing into books, we choose to listen to Justin Bieber’s new songs and to scroll through Instagram posts. We have come to completely neglect the simple pleasures of flipping through pages and getting to finally finish a story. Reading is a task people always dread from some time to another. In order to make reading a little more bearable, there are certain types of ways to read, and different skills to help out. I would be considered a person who reads to understand. There are also certain tips use to help me read, and some that I could definitely start using to improve my skills.
When I was younger, I was interested in reading. I loved leisure reading and used to get different books from the library at least once a week. As I have grown older, I read dramatically less and reading is more irritating. I hate reading and sometimes get annoyed when I have reading assignments in class. Through the years, there were readings that I was forced to read and did not enjoy. It has turned me off from reading for the most part. I know that reading is something that is important, but I also know that it is something that I hate doing most of the time.
Reading is an essential element in our everyday lives. What was the first thing that you learned in school? It was the ability to read. Exercising that ability by reading voluntarily keeps our minds active when we’re out of school. It is a supplement to our minds. The more you read, the more you know!
I would only read books that were required for class, and even then I usually would not finish them. Reading was never something that I liked. When I got into high school, I started reading books for fun a little more than before. I was always a Harry Potter fan but since I did not like to read I only watched the movies. I remember reading those books and actually liking them. My junior year was also a time in my reading history that I remember well. As a class we were reading the Great Gatsby in time to see the movie for the midnight premier. Each day we were instructed to read up to a certain page, no further. I did not like the book at first, just like any other book I was forced to read for school. But, one night I was reading and the book got so interesting for me I could not put it down. That was the first book in along time that I enjoyed reading that was assigned to me. After my junior year, I went right back to my old ways of not reading books. My senior year I took AP English, so this required a lot of books. Thinking back to that year of school I remember finishing maybe one or two of those books. Although, I didn’t read all of those books, I still got a good grade in the class. One thing I did learn from that class about not reading all the books was reading the summaries is not good enough because, they leave out all the
Mason Cooley says about reading “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are .” Reading is like a journey you can take when you want to go somewhere. Everyone always wants to imagine they are in the journey with the character in the book. When the story is over the person that is reading never wants to leave the journey. Everyone starts a new journey when they open a new book to read. Sometimes people who read don’t have a journey with the character; they just want to read because they don’t have anything else to do. For me reading is really fun to do.
"A Study of Reading Habits," is Philip Larkin’s poetic warning that escapism and ignoring reality only makes real life less fulfilling. Larkin develops this idea via a narrator who prefers to escape from life rather than deal with it, as well as through changing use of language and subtle irony. Larkin’s most direct expression of his warning comes through the narrator’s experience with escapism through books. The narrator reveals his changing attitudes toward books in three stanzas, representing three stages in his life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. As a child, reading as an escape enabled the narrator to feel better about "most things short of school" (line 2). As an adolescent, books continued to be a form of escape for him, this time for his unfulfilled sexual desires. However, as an adult "now," the narrator embodies Larkin's warning. He is bitter and resentful that life is less glamorous than books, now only able to relate to the secondary, less important characters. The method he once used to escape now makes reality painfully obvious.
Nevertheless, reading can cause problems in life too. In relative, I began a story that was appealing to the eye. As I continued reading, I noticed a change in mood. Drifting out of focus, I was forced to reread sections of multiple pages; eventually, leading to my decision that reading is not my strong suit. For instance, it is evident that listening to the information is just as effective as it is to read it. While surveying my father, he spoke with confidence; meanwhile, I was still shaky about my decision. This is just one of the copious reasons people do not enjoy
My relationship with books and reading has not been the greatest adventure for me thus far. I will not say that all my experience has been terrible but for the most part not that great. I know for me it started when I was little and unfortunately it has carried to my adulthood.
Reading without thinking was expressed in my AP US History Class. The work load was overwhelming and boring! I hastily read each chapters being tested the night before the test, just to process all the information, then I would forgot about it. I repeated this whole process for the whole entire course not understanding any of the material. At this point, I barely remembered what I learned because I did not find the text I read interesting. I did not grasp the real meaning and only read for the sake of passing the class. Today people read to only “inquire information.” I didn't inquire information because I didn't care to involve myself. Reading the history text was basically a waste of time and just practice because I did not process any information. I did not challenge myself to reflect or think about the concept. I began to read for fun. I went to the library more to pick up book that looked interesting. I started the series Hunger Games, and found that I was hooked. It was the first series that I read within two weeks. Weeks earlier, reading anything was a chore, taking me up to three weeks to read just on book. But with the help of my sister, I pushed myself based on what my sister did, I found that it became easier and easier. I started to love to read. I never thought, in my wildest dreams, that I would actually enjoy reading words in a book. Ten years ago if anyone had asked me this question, I would 've answered ‘without a doubt” in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t say I don't enjoy reading; it's just that I prefer fiction books they are not real but I can relate to, such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving novel. Reading this novel was like reading apart of my life even though it's fiction, I could relate to thing that happen in this story. I desire reading in class because getting an insight on the different interpretations, is fascinating. Reading now keeps our brain active, pumped up, and flowing. There's greater volume to reading than just reading a sentence; there can be a message within the sentence. For example, reading quotes such as “You are braver than you believe, smarter than you seem, and stronger than you think” in Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne. Many people can have different opinion on what this quote means. To me this quote has a significa, that at times people like themselves down but in all actuality they are better than what they think.
To this day many people find reading and writing to be easy or maybe even fun. I on the other hand find writing to be more challenging than reading. It never came as easy like math did.
