In the film High Noon and the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the two main characters Will Kane and Rainsford are similar but also unique in a few ways. Will Kane and Rainsford are both put into a situation where their lives are at stake. The characters Will Kane and Rainsford compare and contrast through setting, conflict, and character type. As seen from their actions in each story, Rainsford and Will Kane are both logical thinkers. When Rainsford falls off the yacht, he begins being isolated in the middle of the ocean. "The lights of the yacht become faint and ever-vanishing fireflies: then they were blotted out entirely by the night" (Cornell 213). Rainsford is then on an island with few people, and one of the few people is General Zaroff. Zaroff makes him even more isolated on the island by having him run away from the mansions to get hunted. Will Kane is isolated in the small town in the Old West. "The street seems empty except for him..." (Foreman 349). The people also make Will Kane isolated by the citizens of the town not helping him against Frank Miller. Kane's only volunteer to help him against Frank Miller even leaves him last minute after hearing there's not any other volunteers. "Baker grabs up his rifle and starts towards the door" (Foreman 385). The setting of isolation has a lot to do with the story even in an island or a small town. Rainsford and Will Kane are both in life or death situations but for different reasons. Rainsford finds out General Zaroff is hunting humans, and he lets Rainsford have the decision of hunting with or against him. "You'll find this game worth playing" (Cornell 222). Will Kane is going to be killed by Frank Miller for sending him to prison. When the news of Frank Miller coming back gets to Will Kane, everyone tells him to leave.

When will needs the towns people of hadleyville for help to defeat frank when he comes after will no one helps. In the other hand "The Most Dangerous Game" is about two very skilled hunter between Rainsford who get trapped on Ship-Trap island by Zaroff who owns the island. When Rainsford realizes what Zaroff hunts in his island he must leave as soon as possible. Zaroff tells Rainsford he could either hunt with him or against him.
In the game, General Zaroff arms everyone on that crew with a knife and a pack of food and each and gives them a three-hour head start. When three hours has passed, General Zaroff hunts them down with a pistol of the smallest bullet size and range, and if someone who is being hunted stays alive for three days, they win. If a person who is supposed to be hunted refuses to play, they are whipped. If they are close to winning, General Zaroff brings out his pack of vicious and ruthless dogs, and because of the general’s unfair method of this cruel game, he has not lost one game after playing this for countless years. When General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that he will hunt again the next day and he wants Rainsford to hunt alongside him, Rainsford cannot bring himself to participate. After falling off his ship and forced to swim to a mysterious island, Rainsford is faced with a challenge. General Zaroff traps him in a “game” that requires Rainsford to use his skills to survive. He is hunted for three days; where he was chased, tracked down, and shot at. General Zaroff led the hunt to try to kill Rainsford. General was equipped with more firepower and help from his henchman and dogs. But even with his much greater opponent, he was able to survive. Rainsford used his many skills to defeat and kill his enemy. He used quick wit to make traps that would slow Zaroff and kill his dogs and henchman. Then he used his intelligence to escape Zaroff by swimming away, but sneaking back into his own mansion.
When world renowned hunter, Sanger Rainsford ends up marooned on an island, he finds himself in an unimaginable word. A world full of murder. He must find a way to save himself and the ones around him. Rainsford is the lesser of two evils he may have a passion for hunting but unlike General Zaroff he has limits, Rainsford kills Zaroff to save himself and many future victims.
If one were to put another character in Rainsford’s position such as Whitney, it is likely that the story would not have ended the way it did. A main reason as to why Rainsford is the dynamic character he is, and can survive such a harsh game, is because he is very self-assured. While passing Ship-Trap Island, all the sailors, aside from Rainsford, are a little anxious because of rumors heard about the island. Rainsford believes that, “one superstitious sailor can taint the whole ships company with his fear,” (page 56). During a firm discussion with Whitney about hunting, Rainsford boldly argues how jaguars are just here to be hunted. Ironically, by the end of the story he thinks just the opposite. The first time he encounters General Zaroff, Rainsford earns the General’s trust instantly because he shows his independence and confidence to him. As he hears about the game, Rainsford does not express obvious fear toward General Zaroff. Being self-assured helps Rainsford to be the strong hunter he is.
Throughout our lives, it seems when we have no one else to help us, our most challenging problems occur leaving ourselves to use our wit and emotion to persevere. People can have test or a big game where we have teachers and coaches to help us prepare and succeed. However, in the movie, High Noon, a Marshall named Will Kane is faced with a challenge of an arriving Frank Miller looking to kill. In the short story, "The Most Dangerous Game", a hunger named Rainsford is deserted on a island after he fell off his yacht, and he would soon find out a sociopath with the unique taste for hunting down humans was out for him. With the two characters in these suspense-building products somewhat trapped we can take out many lessons and ideas from the action packed movie and short story. Rainsford headed off and had spent two hours making his way across a bush all the while repeating the phrase, “I must keep my nerve” (Connell 11). Rainsford tried to keep calm in a terrifying situation because he wanted to live. He was being motivated by the idea of living so he kept persevering. Rainsford had jumped into the sea to get away from the General and it had worked because later that night Rainsford snuck into the General's room and challenged him. Rainsford ultimately won the game and won the privilege of sleeping Zaroff's excellent bed, because we can infer that Rainsford killed him (Connell 15). Rainsford took a chance and jumped into the sea because he knew he wasn’t going to give up without a fight. When Rainsford showed up in his room he knew the general would not let him leave so he challenged him in order for him to stay alive, again taking a chance in order to live. Throughout the story Rainsford had changed, leading up to this moment when he won the game, stayed alive, and killed the general. In the beginning Rainsford was motivated by the great sport of hunting, but then near the end Rainford's only motivation was to stay
Rainsford was forced to choose between life and death by Zaroff. Zaroff tells Rainsford that he hunts people as a type of wild game and takes them hunting first then gives them a few survival things and have to survive for three days in order to win.
“An abrupt sound startled Rainsford. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters, could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times.” (2). This abrupt sound is what lead Rainsford to the island and got him into multiple conflicts including, man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. For example, the conflicts Rainsford faces consists of man versus nature , man versus man, and finally man versus himself.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.
Facing hardships, problems, or obstacles shouldn’t discourage one from completing their task or job. Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.
Will is a genius of unprecedented standards, but is never discovered until a MIT professor, Gerald Lambeau (Stellen Skarsgard) sees Hunting, who is a janitor, solve a complicated math equation that had taken him, a Fields Medal winner, over two years to solve. Hunting solved it on a single night.
Sanger Rainsford has to overcome many obstacles he faces to not become what he fears, the hunted. When he is sprinting away from General Zaroff he has to fight the urge to quit, and he has to fight the battle of “The Most Dangerous Game.” He is running from the hounds, Ivan, and General Zaroff, when he arrives at a safe place he thinks about how close he was to becoming what he fears. Nevertheless, Sanger Rainsford out wits everything he has experienced and wins “The Most Dangerous Game.”
Throughout the story, the two main characters work together and try to rob a family, yet the family ends up dead. Hickock and Smith are two totally different people from contrasting backgrounds. Their backgrounds play a huge role in the character they are. The individuals differ in childhood experiences, physical appearance, and personality.
