Impressionism began in the mid-1800's while Paris was the artistic capital of Europe. While Impressionism was rejected by the Salon de Paris, numerous artists grouped together so they could finally paint what they wanted to paint. Impressionists broke away from traditional artists who covered their canvas with dark undercoats versus Impressionists painted on a white or cream-colored backgrounds for a brighter look. What attracted many to impressionism paintings was the shift from paintings focused on religious beliefs, historical moments, and influential people to art that emphasized both beauty and feelings. Two of the most well-known impressionist artists are Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. Even though Monet and van Gogh were both impressionists
He was born on November 14, 1840 Paris, France. He is the person who started impressionism and had a very strong love for it. Monet described Impressionism as thinking of the colors and shapes. “When you go out to paint, try to forget what objects you have before you, a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here is an oblong of pink, here is a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you and the exact color and shape, until it gives you your own naive impression of the scene before.” From a young age, Monet loved drawing and being outside. He was accepted to the Salon of 1865 but after showing his work, he struggled financially. “Monet became so despondent over the situation that, in 1868, he attempted suicide by trying to drown himself in the Seine River.” While Monet was becoming well-known, he was in need of money and had asked his father to send him money. Monet’s father refused but finally he gained a patron, In June 1870, he married Camille Doncieux, who modelled for his paintings, but the Franco-Prussian War forced Monet, his wife and son to flee to London, England. Once there Monet met his first art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel. After the war, his family moved to Argenteuil, France. “Banding together with several other artists, Monet helped form the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, as an alternative to the Salon and exhibited
He was born March 30, 1853 in the village of Groot Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh works began to improve by learning new colors and techniques for his works. His palette brightened and tones became less serious. ‘Upon meeting Pissarro, Gauguin, and a few of the other artists, he became fascinated by their focus on light and color’. As a painter, he suffered from depression so he realized he prefers to live in small warm and quiet towns. In 1888, He moved to the village of Arles in the south of France, where the weather was warmer and had less people than in Paris. Here he was able to enjoy the sun most of the year. Most of his time was spent painting scenes of the French countryside. Later that year, Gauguin came to stay with Van Gogh at his cottage in Arles. At first, they got along well together talking about their various artistic techniques and painting pictures in the countryside but as the weather started to become cooler, they had to spend more time inside which put a strain on their relationship. Van Gogh began having dark moods and violent temper tantrums which led to having heated arguments between himself and Gauguin. Their arguments grew worse when Van Gogh attacked Gauguin and attempted to kill Gauguin. After viewing Van Gogh insane by slicing off his own ear, Gauguin left the village and never
Claude Monet played an essential role in a development of Impressionism. He created many paintings by capturing powerful art from the world around him. He was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. Later, his family moved to Le Havre, Normandy, France because of his father’s business. Claude Monet did drawings of the nature of Normandy and time spent along the beaches and noticing the nature. As a child, his father had always wanted him to go into the family grocery business, but he was interested in becoming an artist. He was known by people for his charcoal caricatures, this way he made money by selling them by the age of 15. Moreover, Claude went to take drawing lessons with a local artist, but his career in painting had not begun yet. He met artist Eugène Boudin, who became his teacher and taught him to use oil paints. During Vincent Van Gogh’s childhood years, and even before he was born, impressionism was the most common form of art. Impressionism was a very limiting type of art, with certain colors and scenes one must paint with. A few artists had grown tired of impressionism, however, and wanted to create their own genre of art. These artists, including Paul Gaugin, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Paul Cezanne, hoped to better express themselves by painting ...
Paul Cezanne was a French artist born January 19th 1839. Cezanne was considered a Post-Impressionist painter that also helped with the development of the Cubist style. He was born in Aix-en-Provence a small southern French town and was the son of a wealthy banker, Louis-Auguste Cezanne. His mother was Anne Elisabeth Honorine Aubert. He also had two little sisters, Marie and Rose. Paul started going to Saint Joseph school in Aix, when he was just ten. In 1857 Paul started studying drawing from a Spanish Monk named, Joseph Gibert, at the Free Municipal School of Drawing in Aix. His father wanted him to obtain a lucrative profession, so in 1858 he began attending the University of Aix, studying law; still taking art classes. After about a year studying law, Cezanne finally decided to tell his father he wanted to move to Paris to pursue a profession as an artist. His father was not pleased with his decision, but eventually agreed.
Henri Matisse, the leader of the Fauvist movement and master of aesthetic order, was born in Le Cateau-Cambresis in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, his mother bought him a paint set and he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative, Matisse’s own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes.
Vincent Van Gogh is celebrated today as the greatest Dutch painter, besides Rembrandt (“Vincent Willem”). Born in Holland on March 30, 1853, Van Gogh had five other siblings and two parents, and although his mother was an artist, he never bothered with art until much later in his life (“Vincent Willem”). Van Gogh had many shortcomings in his little and dismal time on earth and it was not until his late twenties, after all else had failed, that he gave art a chance. Thanks to the help of his older brother Theo, Van Gogh was able to put all of his emotions and mental worries into productive use, creating masterpieces that are sold today for millions of dollars (“Vincent Willem”). Although he is hugely successful today, Van Gogh had little to no fame in his lifetime and he struggled immensely with his mental state of mind for many years. Ultimately his mental illness (some believe there were more than one) lead to his untimely death, but his turbulent state of mind also helped him to create magnificent images that are revered as some of the greatest pieces of art of today.
In Conclusion Monet was a creative individual. By letting his love for art as a young child, gives him the courage to pursue his dream and never give up, even when the ones close to him had doubt. he prove himself that he can do what he intend to do, and he was willing to learn. This shows that one can accomplish what they want to do as long as they have the will and determination to reach the top. He had the intelligences, and he kept on with the growth from different artistic influences and supportive individuals, and information that he received. He increased his painting ability from marginality, and re-orientation of a domain, consistent production of quality works. Monet was a genius and creative. I admired his strong will and determination, one of his favorite quote was” everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to

Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the rectory of Zundert in Barbant (Burra). His father was a soft-spoken Dutch clergyman. The only thing Van Gogh got from his father, was the desire to be involved in the family church. Even at an early age, Vincent showed artistic talent but neither he nor his parents imagined that painting would take him where it did later in life. One of his first jobs came at the age of sixteen, as an art dealer’s assistant. He went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery where an uncle had been working for some time. Three of his father’s brothers were art dealers, and he was christened after the most distinguished of his uncles, who was manager of the Hague branch of the famous Goupil Galleries (Meier-Graefe). His parents were poor, so his rich uncle offered to take him ...
Monet chose to depict exquisite landscapes from his own gardens and elsewhere, particularly in France. He uses small, elegant brush strokes and vibrant colour to match the scenes he paints. In the mid-1870’s, Monet’s influence over Degas lead Degas to lean his colour choices nearer to those of other Impressionists. In addition to this, Degas began employing pastels, which gave his works a more granular affect that more closely resembled those of other Impressionists. For numerous years in his life, after attempting to paint his the first of his famous “Haystacks” ,and, being unable to seize the right shading or colours due to the rising sun, Monet was intrigued by the affect of weather and light on his outdoor projects. On the other hand, Degas, although also concentrated mainly in France, based his works on people, nudes and ballerinas in particular. Monet never painted a nude.

Impressionism is very pretty and complicated. It was from 1860 to 1910. Monet is the perfect Impressionist. Impressionism had its basic tenants. Their subject matter was the middle upper class, the city, and leisurely activities. They painted on en plein air which means they painted outdoors. They painted in snow, rain, storm, just in order to record directly the effects of light and atmosphere. They painted with strokes and touches of pure color by using a great deal of white and rarely black. They recorded the shifting play of light on the surface of objects and the effect light has on the eye without concern for the physicality of the object being painted. They were influenced by Japanese art and photography. One of Monet’s works is titled Water Lilies. The medium of this work is oil on canvas. Monet is an impressionist. He puts up pure color just describe the water. He said, when you go out paint, the impression of the scene not the exact scene.
Everything in life was a magnificent symphony of colors in Monet's eyes. He brought to canvas the technique of preserving one particular moment in time by developing the style of presenting the first impact of what an eye would capture in one glance before the brain had the chance to create the exact image of the subject in the mind. Today over 2,000 oil paintings and 600 pencil sketches are exhibited in museums, galleries, and with private art collectors (Stuckey 10) allowing the world to appreciate Monet's vision forever.
Claude Monet is often considered one of greatest most dedicated of the Impressionist painters. His aim was to catch the light and atmosphere, something that was scarcely done before. He enjoyed painting outdoors and developed a free and spontaneous painting technique. His brushwork is remarkably flexible and varied. He often changed his technique, sometimes broad and sweeping other times dappled and sparkling.
