Malcom X once said: "If you're not ready to die for it, put 'freedom' out of your vocabulary". Malcom X was a civil rights leader during the 1960's where African Americans were being treated horrible. During this time a woman be the name of Lorraine Hansberry wrote a play called A Raison In The Sun, a refinance to a poem named A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes. In the play there is a character named Walter Lee Younger who is having trouble with his family. Walter Lee and Malcom a different on how they started at the beginning of their stories and the change they went through at the end, but the cause of that change is very similar. Walter's change happen because he was in a crisis. Walter has lost almost all his money when he gave it to a person he trusted. From their Walter was willing to do anything to get some money back. This ends up backfiring when Mama gives Walter a choice. On page 1605 Ruth, Walter's wife, tells Travis, Walter's son, to go down stairs but Mama says no. Mama states: "No. Travis you stay right here. And you make him understand what you doing, Walter Lee. You teach him good. Like Willy Harris taught you. You show where our five generations done come to." Walter was set and stone on not to move in the house until Mama brings Travis into the conversation. Mama wants Walter to think if the choice he is making is the right choice. Walter and Malcom had a similar crisis and that was an identity crisis. With Malcom, when he went to prison, was still acting like the same low life criminal he was on the streets of Harlem until he meets Baines. For example Malcom was taking a shower Baines gave him a drink. Baines tries to talk to Malcom but he ignores him. Bains soon asks him the question "Who ate you?" Mama talks to Walter about her fears of the family falling apart. This is the reason she bought the house and she wants him to understand. Walter doesn't understand and gets angry. "What you need me to say you done right for? You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it. So what you need for me to say it was all right for? So you butchered up a dream of mine - you - who always talking 'bout your children's dreams..." Walter is so obsessive over money that he yells at his mom for not giving him all of it. He doesn't know that what his mom is doing is for the family. He thinks that having money will make the family happy, when in reality the family doesn't need anymore than what they have to be happy.
Here is where Walter first goes to the first grade. When he got there it was suggested that he move on up to second grade because he could read on a second grade level. But his first grade teacher, Mrs.Dworkin Said it was a bad idea because he speak is very bad. On page 18 It states that it wasn’t until second grade that he realized that he had a speech problem. On page 18 around the 2nd paragraph he says that this boy named manual was making fun of his speech by saying “dabba, dabba, dabba” to his face. Walter then states that he stopped that dabba, dabba, dabba when he popped him in the face. On page 19 he say that he heard that his uncle lee was in jail and that he had been in there longer then he had been
In the century where African-Americans had no rights and were highly discriminated, two men set out to make a new lifestyle for each other. Those two men where Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X. Frederick Douglass was a slave when he began to learn to read. Malcolm X was in prison when he began to learn how to read, he was in prison because he was an activist civil right. Both of this men have a great influence to the changes made for African-American rights. Both of this men have similarities and differences. Some of the similarities are why they wanted to learn, and their background. The differences are in the way that they learned to read and write and at what time they learned to read and write. When comparing and contrasting movies and books, the majority of the time the book presents more of a detailed atmosphere and illustration of events. However, in this case I think the book, "Autobiography of Malcolm X” and the movie, “Malcolm X” quoin side with one another.
When Walter Lee has a bad day he can't yell at his boss for fear of loosing his job Instead he takes it out on his family, mainly his wife Ruth. Walter is thirty-five years old and drives a limousine for a living. This job provides just enough for his family without there being extra money left over to spend. It is so bad that when Travis asked his mother Ruth for fifty cents she said she couldn't give it to him because they couldn't afford it. Walter hears this and gets a little upset with Ruth and gives Travis a dollar instead. Walter tells Ruth that she shouldn't tell Travis that they can't give him fifty cents because they don't have it. I believe Walter is upset because he realizes that he isn't able to provide his son with pocket change without becoming broke himself. What kind of man would he be? What kind of role model would he be for Travis if he can't bring home enough money to support his family? How would he be a strong black man for his family? It's obvious that Walter is not able to provide his family with what is considered the "American Dream".
People go through a change when influences are made upon them. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun written by Lorraine Hansberry published in 1959 focuses on what life was like for the Younger family during the 1950s. During this decade there was two sides, the good and the bad, like two sides of a coin, they’re different on each side but they’re one of the same kind. They faced many issues such as discrimination, unequal rights, and financial problems. Throughout the play the three characters who undergo change the most are Walter, Beneatha, and Mama.
“Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X’s “Learning to Read” address their abilities of being self taught to read and write. A deficiency of education makes it difficult to traverse life in any case your race. Being an African American while in a dark period of mistreatment and making progress toward an advanced education demonstrates extraordinary devotion. Malcolm X seized “special pains” in searching to inform himself on “black history” (Malcolm X 3). African Americans have been persecuted all through history, yet two men endeavor to demonstrate that regardless of your past, an education can be acquired by anybody. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were very significant during the Civil Rights Movement. Both were excellent speakers and shared one goal but had two different ways of resolving it. Martin Luther King Jr. chose to resolve the issues by using non-violence to create equality amongst all races to accomplish the goal. Malcolm X also wanted to decrease discrimination and get of segregation but by using another tactic to successfully accomplish the similar goal. The backgrounds of both men were one of the main driven forces behind the ways they executed their plans to rise above the various mistreatments. Martin Luther King Jr. was a more pronounced orator, a more refined leader, and overall saw the larger picture than Malcolm X.
The American dream is “The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” Everyone has opportunities in the US although some have it harder than others to be able to achieve their dream. In the stories, A Raisin in the Sun and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass they both want the “American dream” even though they don’t believe it to be the same. Separated by time but brought together by its struggles they share some similarities but have distinct differences that divide the two stories.
Walter Younger is the biggest dreamer of the family. As the man of the household, he holds the most responsibility since he has to supply for his wife Ruth, son, mother and sister, which is a very demanding task since there are so many people living in such small quarters. His dream is to acquire wealth with his friends in order to support his family, and eventually have enough to give his family a better life and set his son up for a successful life. Throughout the movie, he focuses on quick fixes to any situation that arises. When the neighborhood’s improvement association offers to buy the family out of moving into a white suburb of Chicago, Walter wants to accept the offer because the family needed the money...
Both Charaters had different dreams, walter dream was to be able to get rich and support his family, while Frederick Dream was to become a free man. However, Lorraine Hansberry's play, A Raisin the sun was published 1959, during this time the social conditions of African-Americans and their journey for identity in a discrimitive society " A job. The beginning of Malcolm’s life shaped who he was and would become in the near future. No one would 've thought that this “red” boy from Omaha, Nebraska would play such a huge role in the civil rights movement. Malcolm went through a lot of changes including where he lived, his views on men and women, the way he felt towards society, and even his religion.
