Jackson vs. Lincoln

Jackson and Lincoln are considered the best presidents in United States history for many reasons. Jackson was president when the country seemed to be more stable and at peace. Lincoln was President when there was more conflict and war.

Both presidents were very out spoken. They both had many ideas of what was right and wrong and what needed to be changed or needed in the country. Lincoln wasn’t too out in the public about how he would get votes, but it has been said that he would but some of his votes Jackson on the other hand had a spoils system where he, only allowed people with his similar beliefs take position in the government.

Lincoln and Jackson had very different

views on many things, one of the main things being slavery. Jackson was from the South and was a slave owner and was for slavery. Lincoln was from the North who did not own a slave, he hated slavery and thought it was wrong and wanted it abolished. He believed we were all equal and wanted all white and blacks to be equal. Lincoln had most of the North supporting him as well.

The patronage system was valued by Jackson and used to reward people who supported his ideas with government jobs. This system worked well because people would vote for him so they would get good jobs within the government. Lincoln used this system fully when the war was going on he replaced all the Confederate government workers with Union loyalists. He only used it to keep the government together so they would be able to win the war. Other than that he did not like the purpose of the system.

Before the Civil War African Americans were slaves and considered property by whites and had absolutely no rights. Even a freed slave did not have equal rights to a white man. Although, the property right was lifted for voting they still would not let blacks vote. Jackson despised all races including even the Native Americans. People like Jackson were making it very hard for blacks to recognized fully as equals. Peoples views hadn’t changed whites still believed they were higher than blacks especially the Conservative Republicans. They had a long way to go to fully be recognized as equal.

Lincoln and Jackson have left a great impact on the United States with their various beliefs and ideas. They might have many differences or similarities but all in all they did many great things to help the United States become a better nation.
