An institutional approach to marriage provides more security
“‘Til death do us part,” a vow couples often make as they begin their lifelong journey, is telling of the predicted longevity of their commitment. However, many do not approach marriage with a mindset that will increase their odd of marital success. Some approach marriage looking for a soulmate, while others approach marriage looking for a partner that will support as well as a person to be with for the rest of their lives. Although the two can overlap sometimes, one yields better results than the other.
Fostering a successful marriage requires limiting the risk factors of divorce when choosing a spouse. For example, Couples who have had multiple partners are more likely to get divorced, therefore those who have cohabitated or been married multiple times have a higher chance of divorce. Another factor that predicts divorce likelihood is the type of family the spouse grew up in. If he or she grew up in non intact households then the spouse is more likely to divorce as well: “If your parents were divorced, you’re at least 40 percent more likely to get divorced than if they weren’t. If your parents married others after divorcing, you’re 91 percent more likely

The institutional model values the functions and structure of the marriage over the actual marriage. Institutional models seek to combine the institution of marriage with “sex, parenthood, economic cooperation, and emotional intimacy in a permanent union” (Douthat, 2013). Essentially, a marriage is seen as a way to unite many aspects of life rather than simply happiness. Therefore, couples do their best to avoid divorce. Couples who follow the institutional model are more likely to value the foundation of marriage and find support in the functions of marriage in order to preserve the
First of all, America has the highest divorce rate among western nations. Divorce rate increased after every major war, and decreased during the Post-World War II economic boom. The divorce rate has more than doubled since 1940, when there were two divorces for every 1,000 persons. Now for the same number of people, there are over five divorces. Studies indicate that there is more divorce among persons with low incomes and limited education and those who marry at a very young age. Teenage marriages are much more likely to end in divorce than are all other marriages. And women who marry when they are over age 30 are the least likely to become divorced. There has been a decline in divorce in the number of couples who have children under 18. Almost 45 p...
More Americans are getting divorced at an astonishing rate, according to the McKinley Irvin Family Law, there are about 16,800 divorces per week. This phenomenon has triggered a general panic among young adults. Therefore, animated by their fear of getting divorced, young adults have elaborated a new solution to avoid divorce which is cohabitation. They see cohabitation as a test to avoid divorce. However, does cohabitation really work? Meg Jay in her text entitled “The Downside of Living Together” defends the idea that seeing cohabitation as a preventive way to avoid divorce leads to increase the chance of divorce. I believe that cohabitation
No one expects to divorce when they get married but nearly half of all marriages will end in divorce or separation. Divorce can be costly, with court fees and attorneys. Dr. Doherty, noted marriage scholar and therapist has determined a list of risk factors that are attributed to marital problems and divorce. The first three: Young age, less education and less income are coincidently other topics brushed upon in this paper. Impulsive decisions made by younger people to marry leads to children which leads to financial instability. Once a couple has children, they are unlikely to further their education because of lack of time. Divorce also has a negative effect on
The culture that exists in America is one that is constantly changing to suit the times and the many different types of people that reside in the country. One aspect of American culture that has changed profoundly is the institution of marriage. Marriage began as the undisputed lifestyle for couples willing to make the ultimate commitment to one another. However in less than a century, pointless and destructive alternatives such as premarital cohabitation, have developed to replace marriage.
Marriage is a commitment that seems to be getting harder to keep. The social standards placed on an individual by society and influenced by the media inevitably lead some to consider divorce as a “quick-fix” option. “Have it your way” has become a motto in the United States. It has become a country without any consideration of the psychological effects of marriage and divorce. The overwhelmingly high divorce rate is caused by a lack of moral beliefs and marital expectations.
Marriage and divorce are culturally ruled, as I have noted from my interviews with friends and family of different cultures who have married, perhaps some have divorced, and with each experience in love they have culturally accepted values that pertain to their overall ideals and values on love, marriage, shared values, etc. The purpose of this paper is to establish a clear understanding of human nature as it relates to the portrait of adulthood and mate selection; institution of marriage, procreation, and even divorce as it relates to acceptance of failed expectations and moving on. I was not surprised to learn that the people I interviewed were traditional in their beliefs that marriage is a serious commitment that should be respected and approached for longevity.
The institution of marriage is treated differently between the two cultures. Marriage practices are not so important in the American culture, and couples are free to choose; to follow common or to choose a combination of practices. The Americans have not consistently followed their practices and customs and in some cases have adopted other practices. The American culture is not strong on the institution of marriage as it is for India. The current American society does not consider marriage institution; its importance comes after career and financial matters. This is evident in the way the society perceives marriages; marriages are secondary to career and financial matters. Americans can choose to divorce in order to pursue career of because of financial matters. The high rates of divorce also explain how the society views the institution of marriage. India considers the marriage institution as very important and should be treated with all respect by all in the society. The importance of the marriage institution is evident from the marriage practices that have remained consistent in the Indian cu...
Most marriages are ending within seven years ofthemarriage for multiple different reasons. Sociologists haveestablisheddivorce as a social problem from the rise in divorcerates due to the early year of marriages (2006). Functionalism is when society is stable and running as anorderly system with interrelated part. At this point, this type of society is considered to be the example of a perfect functioning society.
Throughout the last half of the century, our society has watched the divorce rate of married couples skyrocket to numbers previously not seen. Although their has been a slight decline in divorce rates, “half of first marriages still were expected to dissolve before death.” (Stacy, 15, 1991) Whatever happened to that meaningful exchange of words, “until death do us part,” uttered by the bride and groom to each other on their wedding day? What could have been the cause of such inflated divorce rates? Perhaps young married couples are not mature enough to be engaged in such a trremendous responsibility, or, maybe, the couples really do not know each other as well as they thought. Possibly, they have been blinded by infatuation rather than by true love, or, quite simply, the couples mistakenly have different relational expectations.

Other causes range from education to money, which can go hand in hand. If uneducated, then the chance of establishing a moderate income from a decent job is unlikely. Obtaining steady paying careers are only a result of furthering one’s education beyond the high school level. A balanced income, to pay finances and purchase necessities, avoids stressful outlooks on life. Decreasing the chances of a divorce. Additionally, other such causes of divorce include premarital childbearing, no religious affiliation, a parents’ divorce, and
Marriage has gone through many changes throughout its history. It's earliest forms date back to the story of creation. It has developed a great deal since then. It is a simple fact that men and women can not survive without each other. Marriage is part of the created natural order, we were meant to be together.
There was a time, in a traditional wedding, the couple repeated the phrase, “till death do us part,” and it meant that only the death of one or the other would end the marriage. Some get married on a whim with no regard to the commitment made before God, family and friends. Troubles hit the marriage and the only route of defense is the divorce court. Still others may have courted for a while, spend a small fortune on the perfect wedding and still end in divorce. According to Dana Krupinsky his article, Divorce in America – Why?, people want only what is good for themselves, even if it is not the best for someone else. Some have the attitude, "If the marriage doesn't work, I can get a divorce.” Making a marriage work is much harder that filling out paperwork.
The fourth and final step of the marriage process is to become one flesh. According to free dictionary.com, become means “to grow or come to be,” or “to be appropriate or suitable; to develop or grow into; to be appropriate; befit.” Becoming is a process that takes time and work. Tim Keller states that in order to call a union marriage, “sex is understood as both a sign of that personal, legal union and a means to accomplish it. The Bible says don’t unite with someone physically unless you are also willing to unite with the person emotionally, personally, socially, economically, and legally. Don’t become physically naked and vulnerable to the another person without becoming vulnerable in every other way, because you have given up your freedom and bound yourself in marriage.” (Keller pg. 215) God’s design is supposed to occur on the wedding night as they complete their marriage vows by having sex. It is clear that “they will become one flesh” is a indirect term for sex but it is also more than sex. The become one is to be on the same page, mind and accord. It is correct to compare it to one brain, making one decision and taking one action. Together one path, and they share one authority, one heart, one body, one mind, one thought, one church, and one God. The spouses become one flesh in every sense of the word. All these areas of oneness are important because division in any of them will cause them to stumble.
Each marriage comes with a different perspective and story, whether it is an arranged marriage or love marriage. Arranged and Love marriages are very similar yet different. Love is the pure feeling of attachment. Arrange marriage is like a blind date in hopes to find love. It could be love at first sight or love after a while so in somewhat way they end up being a love marriage after all because the end result is the same as they get married or find love. In this essay there will be comparison done on love marriage and arrange marriage. Each country has a different perspective on each type of marriage. I will be comparing both marriages in America and India. Love Marriages come with a responsibility of their
