Ichabod Crane was a tall and thin schoolteacher. He was generally liked around town by the old busybodies because he was an excellent source for gossip. He is gluttonous, and scares himself with stories of monsters and dragons.
Brom Van Brunt on the other hand is quite the opposite. He is burly, strong, and a bit of a tolerated but well-liked town favorite. He is rowdy, brave, and loves adventure.
Even though these two characters are so different they do have similar qualities. For instance, they are both liked, or at least wanted, around the town. Ichabod rather makes people need him by providing himself as a traveling newspaper. He helps the farmers with their lighter work and tends the little children for their mothers. Brom Van Brunt

is liked because of who he is as a person. He is daring and rowdy and although they do tend to think of him as a bit of a trouble maker, the town loves him to. They both love Katrina Van Tassel, or at least, Brom does.
Ichabod fancies himself in love with her after he visited her father’s wealthy farm. Brom loves her because she is a challenge, and rather he does love her for who she is.
These two men are polar opposites, and fight each other in different ways. When Brom finds out Ichabod is supposedly in love with Katrina, he plays a series of practical hokes on Ichabod, knowing the schoolteacher would not resort to physical violence. Ichabod goes under the radar, so to speak, and quietly flirts and spends time with Katrina
One of the most interesting things about these characters is that Ichabod makes himself in-disposable to the people, and the people make themselves in-disposable to Brom, in a way. Ichabod, as a schoolteacher to a small town, must rotate where he lives each week. Because he does not want his pupil’s families to get tired of him staying at there place each week, he provides gossip and frightening stories. He helps out, but he never does anything to make them resent him. He wants to be rich and marry Katrina so he can finally stop smiling at everyone and can stop acting like nothing bothers him. Brom is seems wants Katrina because it is such a challenge to keep a country
coquette. At the end of the book Ichabod disappears; the town busybodies seem to thin the Headless Horseman carried him away, while the more sensible believe Brom Van Brunt chased Ichabod away so he could marry Katrina. Brom did marry Katrina and whenever someone mentions the story of how Ichabod disappeared he would laugh. All in all we experience the story of two people who are supremely different, yet strikingly similar in what they want. I prefer the audio book to reading because the story comes alive in a way that ink cannot seem to master.
How are the characters of Atticus and Jack alike and how are they different? Choose at least two traits to compare them.
Christopher McCandless and Adam Shepard both did some similar targets in their lives, at the end it lead them to unexpected situations. Christopher McCandless was a young man who didn't believe in society and he chose to get away from that and left everything he had, including his family. He developed important relationships with key people that helped him on his journey into the wild. Similarly Adam Shepard was a young man who left with only $25 and a sleeping bag to go prove his point that the american dream does exist and to see if he can achieve it in a couple of months. Overall comparing McCandless and Shepard, Christopher McCandless had a greater impact in people, motivated many, and was selfish in plenty of good ways.
McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest and Luke from Cool hand Luke. Are both men that are similar to each other and that both can be used as examples of someone being a christ figure. The two of them in there own way we're able to be leaders of there peers and to have the trust from them, and to do it in a non violent way. Luke and McMurphy both get there men to stand up against the Boss and Big Nurse to do what is good for them. They both died while suffering. Just like Christ did.
...him to a minor character in the movie version. While Bromden is still a dynamic character in the movie, the real puzzle to his problems is lost.
The stories To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Scarlet Ibis may not be identical, but they are beautiful stories that send the message of being kind to everyone, and are suffused with symbolism. Doodle was a human being like everyone else, yet Brother was ashamed of him simply because he was different. Or exotic, like a scarlet ibis. On page 419 of The Scarlet Ibis it says, “...I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This clearly states that Brother was ashamed of Doodle.
Two people could be living two very different lifestyles, yet they could be very similar in the way they act and react in the same situation. Charlotte from “The Metaphor” by Budge Wilson and the Mother character from “Borders” by Thomas King live very different lives but the way they deal with the problems they are faced with is very similar. Both protagonists have to deal with trying to be forced to be something they are not by society and their families, but Charlotte from “The Metaphor” has been challenged by her strenuous home, she must face her organized mother and orderly home; the Mother from “Borders” must stand up for what she believes in and fight for what she wants.
In Fahrenheit 451 and Lord of the Flies, the characters are alike in some ways. In Fahrenheit 451 the characters are Montag, Faber, Clarisse, and Beatty. In Lord of the Flies the characters are Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack. Jack and Beatty, Ralph and Montag, Simon and Clarisse, and Piggy and Faber all have some similarities. Jack and beatty both want to take control over everyone and sells fear. Ralph and Montag want to move on and find a better plan to make everything work. Simon and Clarisse are Christ-figures. Piggy and Faber are very intellectual and are wise men. The books may contain different story lines but have very similar types of characters.
Reading a book once in a while helps us from being ignorant from the outside world. Readers many times dare to compare and discuss about the books that they have read. This works when we read two master pieces of literature that could be very similar and in the same time very different stories. I had the great fortune of reading the screenplay of “To Kill a Mockingbird” as well as the part of the memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”. After reading these two great pieces of literature I dare to compare the main characters, Scout from “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Maria from “I know why the caged bird sings”. The main intentions of this two books are to teach lesson to their readers whether they could be children or adults.
What is a hero? What is a leader? Both of these words could be used to describe Odysseus and Atticus Finch in their times and, maybe still could be described as a leader/hero. Odysseus who lived in Ancient Greek was the picture of a hero and leader in that time. He … . Atticus who lived in Alabama in the early-mid 1900’s, could also be classified as a hero of some sort but he seemed like more of a leader. He, … . Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird, and Odysseus from The Odyssey both are leaders and Heros in their own way, they also have people surrounding them that question them, and also people that support them.
The character Crane-Man in the story A Single Shard shows many different character traits/personalities throughout the story.
He begins to believe that Katrina likes him but he is more excited about the title it will bring him. This can be seen in the text “How soon he'd turn his back upon the old schoolhouse; snap his fingers in the face of Hans Van Ripper, and every other niggardly patron, and kick any itinerant pedagogue out of doors that should dare to call him comrade!” (Irving, p.20 ). This describes Ichabod as only wanting money, and not caring what others are thinking or treating him because he has all the power. Irving shows Ichabods character as very greedy and he uses people to get power, money, and food. Readers are able to relate to this because our society is based on people being greedy and only looking for
For example, Ichabod is describe by Irving Washington as "striding along the profile of a hill on a windy day, with his clothes bagging and fluttering about him, one might have mistaken him for the genius of famine descending upon the earth, or some scarecrow eloped from a corn-field" (9). This clearly shows how ridiculous Ichabod is. Ichabod is also describe by Irving Washington as "His head was small, and flat at top, with huge ears, large green glassy eyes, and a long snipe nose, so that it looked like a weather-cock, perched upon his spindle neck, to tell which way the wind blew" (9). This show his negative particularity. Further, Ichabod wretchedness. He is lodged in the houses of the farmers, whose students he
The character, Meursault felt isolation within himself and the community which lead him into believing he had no significance to the community, this relates to the characters in Lord Of The Flies, when stranded on the island the boys felt abandoned and helpless which lead them into creating a bond that no one will ever understand. During their time on the island, not all boys created attachments to each other, certain individuals felt closer than others. The relationship Piggy and Ralph made was one of the examples of feeling significant to another. In the text it states, "If
Irving’s version of Ichabod depicts him as a stereotypical archetype similar to that of “the city slicker.” (pg. Greg slickre.) He is both self-assured and educated, which causes him to feel like he is superior to the townspeople. It is also shown that his main goal in life is only self-advancement. His greediness and discontent in his social position causes him to pursue a spot in a more upper class family, the Van Tassels. Additionally, Ichabod can be considered suggestible because of his steadfast belief in the supernatural and ghosts. However, by the end of the story, the main character is not considered the hero since the Headless Horseman got him. In the movie, Ichabod is almost the complete opposite. Although he is intellectually superior to the townspeople with his aptitude in science, he doesn’t consider himself worthier than the others. His belief in the supernatural also differs since he shows that he believes more in what can be proven. This is due to the fact that his backstory and his mother’s murder goes into more depth, whereas the original character has no story or personality. Furthermore, Ichabod in the cinematic version goes through a character development when he goes through a self-exploration. Originally, Ichabod does not believe in the supernatural, but as the story goes in his view of the world changes. Moreover, Ichabod Crane can be
It’s not common for birds to attack humans, right? Alfred Hitchcock’s based his movie The Birds on Daphne du Maurier's story, but still there are many differences. Between these two stories the birds were attacking small towns, but both ended up having different endings. One story ended up having a family live happily ever after, and the other ended up having a twisted ending.
