Sacrifice: Manipulation and Self-Destruction Leads to Downfalls
In “Hunger” by Knut Hamsun and “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen, the protagonists show sacrificial entities within themselves as they relinquish themselves to obtain superficial benefits. An unnamed protagonist is on the brink of hunger as he starves in order to write. A woman grows towards debt as her lies and dishonesty catches up to her and ruins her marriage. Sacrifice may seem beneficial, but it also has devastating downfalls as it justifies brutal, physical and mental actions. Although self- sacrifice is commonly seen in religion in politics, we also use sacrifice in entities such as with love and morals. As humans, we plunge into ridiculousness in order to sacrifice part of ourselves, but sometimes, these sacrifices lead to fraudulence as well as the hunger for additional desires.

Struggling to earn a living and consume food, he continuously writes, sacrificing and manipulating his own sanity for his work. His own coherency slowly disintegrates as he refuses to eat in order to keep writing his articles. Kramer vs. Kramer shows the outcome, the aftermath of A Doll’s House. In A Doll’s House there is the hard-working husband and father, Torvald and the stay at home wife whose job is only to mother the children, Nora. There is same exact scenario in the movie Kramer vs. Kramer with Ted and Joanna. Both in the play and the movie Nora and Torvald, and Joanna and Ted are married for eight years before they split, and they have at least one child. Kramer vs. Kramer continues the story of A Doll’s House, but from a different point of view.
The central figures in these three works are all undoubtedly flawed, each one in a very different way. They may have responded to their positions in life, or the circumstances in which they find themselves may have brought out traits that already existed. Whichever applies to each individual, or the peculiar combination of the two that is specific to them, it effects the outcome of their lives. Their reaction to these defects, and the control or lack of it that they apply to these qualities, is also central to the narrative that drives these texts. The exploration of the characters of these men and their particular idiosyncrasies is the thread that runs throughout all of the works.
The only reason humanity is where it is now is because of the ability for humans to know when and where sacrifices must be made. From having to cut off an arm to escape from an avalanche, to having to spend extra time doing homework that would be better spent playing video games, sacrifices have always been made to achieve better and more rewarding goals. There are two kinds of sacrifices that are made. Those that one must make by themself and those that other’s are forced to make in order to achieve that end goal. In “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell and “A Dollhouse” by Henrik Ibsen, the authors use symbolism to shed light on the way woman were once looked down upon by men. In both plays the woman face similar derisive attitudes from the men in their lives. Women are treated as property, looked down upon and only useful in matters pertaining to cooking, taking care of children, housework and sexual objects. The women’s marriages, socioeconomic and social status are completely different, but both women reach their emotional breaking point, and grow so discontent with their situations they are willing to take drastic actions.

In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," the main character is a woman who has been controlled and conformed to the norms of society. Louise Mallard has apparently given her entire life to assuring her husband's happiness while forfeiting her own. This truth is also apparent in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House. In this story, Nora Helmer has also given her life to a man who has very little concern for her feelings or beliefs. Both of these characters live very lonely lives, and both have a desire to find out who they really are and also what they are capable of becoming. Although the characters of Nora and Louise are very much alike in many ways, their personalities differ greatly when it comes to making decisions regarding the direction of their lives.

The play “A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen starts in the Helmer’s home on Christmas Eve. At the beginning of the play, the audience is introduced to Nora Helmer, the woman of the household. Nora is completely delighted with her life, and feels favorable for the way her life is coming along. She looks forward to the New Year when her husband starts his new job as a bank manager, where he will “have a big salary and earn lots and lots of money” (Ibsen 1350). Torvald Helmer, her husband, teases her and treats her like a child who is incapable.
