A specific memory that stands out to me is when we watched the two versions of Great Gatsby. I thought it very interesting to put the movies side by side and compare and contrast how the different time periods perceive the setting and characters of the book. The older movie had less color because the quality was worst but it seemed more fitting because the actors acted out their characters the way I would imagine people from the early 1900s would behave and speak. Even though the more recent version had better props and quality, I still prefer the older version because it matched the book
better.
In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F.Scott Fitzgerald and Chicago. Directed by Rob Marshall, they all wanted two things money, and power. Both characters had a false view of the American Dream ,they thought having both money and power will solve their problems but in reality, them trying to achieve their goals only made life worse in their case. Also how they view their accomplishments ruin their life, both characters all wanted to be happy. Gatsby wanted money to have his love of his life, and Roxie wanted money and power to get away from her old life.
A noticeable difference in the way movies have changed over the years is evident when comparing and contrasting two films of different eras which belong to the same genre and contain the same subject matter. Two vampire movies, Dracula and Bram Stoker's Dracula, present an interesting example of this type of study.
For example, Leonardo Dicaprio’s character of Gatsby was focused on emotions. I enjoyed that Redford was very calm and cool about everything and the way he approached the character but, Dicaprio made such an open and outgoing character which made the movie more entertaining. DiCaprio captured Gatsby’s intensity and charm and brought out the crazy mood swings and took his character and the audience to a more emotional place. Both Robert Redford and Leonardo DiCaprio had their own way of approaching the character and really selling Gatsby but Leonardo DiCaprios was better. Another reason I prefer the 2013 version of the 74’ is because of the bond and friendship Nick Carraway played by Tobey Maguire and Gatsby had MaGuire was able to bring a true and strong meaning to their friendship that made his and Gatsby’s bond feel organic and real and you were able to see that clearly unlike with Waterston where you just saw the friendship and didn’t feel any emotion. But I felt much more of a connection with his character than I did with the ’74 version. If you have read the book and seen the original film, then you understood where Nick was coming from in the scene where he was furious with Gatsby, after he believe he killed Myrtle only to find out that Gatsby wasn’t the one driving the car that killed Mrytle, MaGuire, did a fantastic job in showing his emotions and how what happened to Myrtle and the person that killed Myrtle affected him. I loved that Nick was a lot more real in this movie. He didn’t hold back and he gave the audience a reaction that anyone in life would have had if they were in his situation. The nature of each protagonist in the novel, The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald, and in the film American Gangster by Ridley Scott, were very similar due to the fact that their dreams destroyed their character. The protagonist in The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, first aspired to become a rich man. In efforts of fulfilling his desires, his own dream destructed his emotional conscious. Similarly, the main character of American Gangster, Frank Lucas was destructed, but by immorality and wrongdoing

Jay Gatsby and F. Scott Fitzgerald, two different beings, one a book character, the other a human being but both are the same person. Jay Gatsby, as evinced by the the title, is the main character in The Great Gatsby. His goals and achievements is what the novel revolves around. Gatsby is the most interesting character which is why he leaves something to think about in everything he does in the book, but what makes him amazing are the parallels between him and Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby as a catalyst of his life in the novel.
The past and future to people are the most frightening thing. The past is what makes your future, or helps you fix your future and make it better. People sometimes stay in their past because they are too scared of the future and what their future is going to be like. The past is usually when all the good things happened to people, so they try and stay in the past but the point of the past is to have a plan for the future, and plan that will make your life better. The novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the film Chicago directed by Rob Marshall takes place in the 1920s and shows us how different we see life now, then how people saw life back then. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby wants to forget his past except for the fact that he still loves daisy, While Gatsby longs to re-create his past romance with Daisy and build a new future together. He tries to hide his past with non credible facts about his past in order to help his future become more successful. The Film Chicago which is very similar to The Great Gatsby because Roxie, has a bad past that puts her in a bad position, That finally put her on the new paper. Roxie only cares about fame and money and attempts to break free from her marriage to build a future for herself.
Characters, settings, and theme are all very important elements of a story. The Great Gatsby, "Winter Dreams," and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" all have similar themes and symbols. Most of these themes lie within the characters. The characters in all three stories live in the past, are primarily wealthy or do not wish to seek wealth, and have had a love in their life. F.Scott Fitzgerald definitely portrayed living the life in the "American Dream" through out these stories as a very hollow and unpleasing way of living.
As the case with most “Novel to Movie” adaptations, screenwriters for films will make minor, and sometimes drastic, adjustments to the original text in order to increase drama and to reach modern audiences. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and the film The Notebook directed by Nick Cassavetes both share a similar love story producing the idea that first love never dies. Both the novel and the film present the idea of a lower class man falling in love with a wealthy woman. Neither of the men are able to stay with the women due to disapproval. When the men finally reconnect with the women, they realize they are already in a new relationship. Essay 4: Comparative Analysis of Two Texts When comparing two texts, one must look at the characters and themes to find similarities and differences and we see a similarity with the theme of accepting reality in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and The Great Gatsby. There are differences in both texts with the way the characters fight reality, but the outcome is the same. The power of love in both texts is looked at as more important than social priorities and the main characters will do anything to get what they want and it results in death. One might come to conclusions to say that F. Scott Fitzgerald based the relationship of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan on Romeo and Juliet, seeing that both stories have characters who do not accept the reality and in their minds, love overpowers everything. When looking at these two texts side to side, one would notice many similarities in the actions of the main characters.

In “Theory Number Five: Anatomy of Nostalgic Films: Heritage and Method (1977), one of the first writings which addressed nostalgic representations of the past in cinema, Marc Le Sueur notes that nostalgia is “a concept of history”, one for which “few have attempted to establish the general working principles” (p.189). It is not a conservative phenomenon, but rather a way of engaging with the past and bringing into the present that which other approaches to history ignore, as he further indicates. His conception prefigured two dominant tendencies of research into nostalgia in film studies. While the first examines the use of intertextual devices and flashbacks to evoke nostalgia (Lurry 2000, Wollen 1991), the second aims to evaluate the relationship between nostalgic film and history (Boym 2001, Dika 2003, Grainger 2002, Hutcheon 1989, Jameson 1985). Although the former identifies useful tools for cinematic analysis of film texts, the latter is more relevant to media and cultural studies, for it assesses nostalgia in relation to our historical consciousness. The film “The English Patient” (1996), written for the screen and directed by Anthony Minghella, presents its audiences with a complex mise-en-scène viewed through the filter of nostalgic memories and demonstrates those vital issues of cinematic nostalgia on various levels. Therefore, in this essay, I shall examine the way in which nostalgia in the movie helps reflect on issues of the “present”, subvert the undisputed history and offer competing mythologies of the 1930s.
