Showdown of the Sharks
1975 Jaws vs. 1999 Deep Blue Sea
Although both movies are structured around the destruction and killing of a huge Great White shark. Tooth by tooth just like all the different teeth in a sharks mouth, Jaws (1975) and Deep Blue Sea (1999) have many differences. The movies differ greatly just by the time period they were created in. Jaws and Deep Blue Sea were both huge movies of the year they were released, but Jaws continues to be a popular movie. Jaws being one of the greatest Speilberg horror creations of all time, that would forever leave everyone with an eerie feeling as they entered the water. Deep Blue Sea was not nearly as popular as Jaws, but was created differently

using some of the same ideas, but uniquely enough that it is not the same as Jaws. The major differences between these two movies are the characters, setting, and the plots. There are several other differences between the two films, but these three show the most contrast. The main characters in the thriller, Jaws, were all brought together throughout the movie and not introduced all at the same time.
Brody, the town police chief, was straightforward, and pursued to make sure he was heard especially by the town mayor. As the shark attacks began to happen, Brody becomes more and more concerned with the issue. He becomes paranoid as the shark strikes close to his son, Michael, and gets wrapped up in the idea of finding and killing this huge predator to protect his family and secure the waters for the safety of the island. Brody also has a fear of water, but in the movie he overcomes, showing his concern and persistence to get rid of this threat. Hooper is another character involved in Jaws. Hooper is a Marine Biologist who just happens to be visiting the island at this time of action. He finds out about the shark attacks and becomes very interested in finding this shark. Hooper was not taken seriously at first, but after he cut a shark open on the dock to display that it was not “the” shark, Brody realized his knowledge of the species would be useful. Quint is the third main character involved in the film. Quint is a very crude, seasoned shark hunter who is the captain of the Orca. Quint made a dramatic …show more content…
appearance during a meeting with the town advisors, screeching his nails across a chalkboard. He made a speech about how things were getting out of hand, and how they needed help, claiming he was the man for the job. Quint wanted a $10,000 reward for the finding and killing of the shark. They denied his offer but later gave him the job along with Hooper and Brody. Quint provided the equipment necessary for this task (Jaws1975). The main characters in Deep Blue Sea were introduced from the beginning. Russell Franklin, Carter Blake, Dr. Susan McCallister, Preacher, Tom Scoggins, Dr. Jim Whitlock, Janice Higgins, and Brenda Kerns were the main characters involved in the movie. These characters other than Preacher, who was the cook, were a team of scientists and researchers. Russell, played by Samuel L. Jackson, was the corporate executive of the team. During a test, Dr. Jim Whitlock’s arm was bitten off. When he was being airlifted out on a helicopter, an approaching hurricane caused the helicopter to crash into the ocean. This leaves Susan, Russell, Carter, Janice Higgins, Tom, and Preacher left to take on the sharks (Deep Blue Sea 1995). The setting of the two films distinguishes them apart from each also. In Jaws, the story takes place on the week of fourth of July on an island called, Amity. Amity had never been exposed to shark attacks like these and were sent into panic once they realize it is a serious issue. The people on the beach of Amity add to the effects of the movie because they nonchalantly disregard the warnings of the shark attacks and continue to swim and play in the water (Jaws1975). In Deep Blue Sea the movie is set on a distant, former submarine refueling base converted into a laboratory. A hurricane hits the base, and restricts any evacuation. As the laboratory begins to flood, after a large shark penetrates through a glass window, it becomes a maze for the team to navigate through the large base, as failing electricity restricts access to certain doors, and as the amount of oxygen disappears quickly, all while being chased by blood thirsty sharks (Deep Blue Sea 1995). Jaws is argued to have a better storyline and plot.
The plot is a major difference setting these two movies apart. Jaws starts off the movie with two teenagers rushing down the beach towards the dark water to go for a little skinny dipping, night swim. When the guy passes out on the beach taking his clothes off it leaves the girl out in the water all alone. The shark strikes dragging her around and then underneath the dark blanket of the water surface, not to return. The girl’s hand is then found washed up on the beach the next day with a pile of crabs feasting off of it. It was a hot, dry summer on Amity Island during the fourth of July week, a small community, whose main revenue comes from its beaches. When the new Chief of Police, Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first instinct is to close the beaches to swimmers and boaters. However, this does not go over well with the mayor and the town committee. Chief Brody is angered and disappointed when a young boy is killed by the predator that very same weekend. The dead boy's mother puts out a bounty on the shark, and the waters of Amity are soon overloaded with amateur shark hunters and fisherman hoping to win the reward. A local fisherman with a lot of experience hunting sharks, Quint, offers to hunt down the creature for $10,000. Soon Quint, Brody and Hooper, a visitor from the Oceanographic Institute, depart the island and head offshore to begin hunting the Great White shark. As the three men
make their first encounter with the creature, they realize they are going to need a bigger boat. The team finds the shark out in the deep and throughout multiple attempts are close to killing the beast, when the shark causes the boat to start sinking. As the boat is sinking the huge shark bites Quint and drags him away. Brody and Hooper, run around trying to figure something out, while the boat is sinking fast. An air tank was shoved in the sharks mouth, and as it swims away Brody places a precise bullet into the tank, causing a massive explosion. With the boat gone, and the shark dead, Brody and Hooper swim off into the distance (Jaws 1975). In Deep Blue Sea, the team of scientists search for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease in the brains of sharks. Dr. Susan secretly violates the agreement and genetically enhances three of the sharks captured to increase their brain capacity, but this causes the sharks to become smarter, faster, and more threatening. Dr. Jim’s arm was bitten off, and in a failing attempt to transport him to safety, the sharks break through the underwater glass barrier into the laboratory. The team of scientists are forced to evacuate the base without letting the sharks escape back into the open ocean. In the final scene, Carter, Susan, and Preacher make it to the surface of the laboratory, only to see complete destruction of Aquatica. The shark attacks preacher, but releases him when Preacher stabs it in the eye with a cross on his necklace. The shark races off to the gate and is ramming it trying to escape, and Carter comes up with a plan to harpoon the shark with a cable with explosive powder. The shark was just too far out of Carters range, so Susan cut open her hand and jumped in the water. Susan’s blood attracted the shark back into range, and then Preacher attached the cable to the battery to make the explosion, after Carter harpooned the shark with the explosive powder (Deep Blue Sea 1995). Throughout the characters, setting, and plot, the differences between Jaws and Deep Blue Sea can be noticed. Yes, both movies involve massive sharks but these two movies have little to no similarities, but many differences. Jaws is definitely the most popular out of the two horror/thriller films, because it takes a bite out of the viewer’s eyes, sparking a deep interest fueled by an intense feeling of suspense. To further discuss these two movies, “We are going to need a bigger boat.”(Jaws 1975).
The movie and the story had some of the same characters but some weren't exactly the same. The movie introduced many different characters and changed some of the others. For example, the movie had the plant lady and had the mentor of Anderton as the founders of Precrime while in the book, Anderton was the only founder of Precrime. Also, Witwer wasn't blond he had black hair and Kapler wasn't named Kapler he was named Crow. In the story they had the red head Fleming who did not exist
Jaws is a 1975 thriller that was directed by Steven Spielberg and is also based on a 1974 nook with the same name. The film is about a great white shark attacking Amity Island which is obviously not real but a fictional resort.
These differences are here so that the film is more understandable for the audience it is aimed at, if the film showed what actually happened, it would be a lot more gruesome, and would have probably have been rated 15 by the BBFC. To conclude, both media portray the same story, but they are aimed at different audiences, if you are looking for all of the information about Pocahontas, the literature is what you need, if you want an entertaining movie, watch the film.
Once the shark is killed the film ends rather quickly. The immediate reward for Brody is that Amity will once again be safe, as well as the fact that he is no longer threatened himself. He also discovers that Hooper hasn’t been killed and that together they will be able to swim back to shore.
The main ideas of both of the movies is to win the heart of a Jane Doe— beautiful, seemingly impossible to reel in. Big Fish seriously takes the bait in that one.
‘Jaws’ a thriller based on the novel by Peter Benchley, the film was directed by Steven Spielberg. In a beach resort of Amity Island, a young girl named Chrissie is the first victim of the shark’s vicious attack, when it strikes for the second time, the police refuse to put out warning about the shark. It then returns and kills again, the mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the great white shark before it kills even more victims. The fishermen are satisfied when they catch a Tiger shark the mayor reopens the beaches despite the warning from the ichthyologist when he suspects it was from a formidable great white shark. Brody and Hooper and the only fisherman willing to join them to catch the great white set out in the fisherman’s boat only coming face to teeth with the enemy. This film is rated as a 15, and has a running-time of 124 minutes. It was made in the USA, the soundtrack to ‘Jaws’ was a famous two-note piece composed by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák.
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was a branch off the novel Jaws written by Peter Benchley . The Novel was written in 1974 receiving a best sellers award and therefore setting up for a movie just one year later in 1975, which soon invented the phrase “blockbuster”which simply is to gross over 100 million dollars. Since this was a highly publicized and successful novel Steven Spielberg was held to a high expectation for this movie to be an ultimate hit. The book and the movie have a lot of differences. The book gives you an all around synopsis on every character while the Movie gives you a breath description on what the character was about and more emphasis on the shark.
The classic 1975 film, Jaws, takes place in a coastal New England tourist town. After a young woman is killed by a shark the police chief and the mayor have differing opinion on what to do about the shark. The police chief, Martin Brody, wants to close the beaches while the mayor, Larry Vaughn, does not want to lose any tourist revenue and overrules him. After another shark attack a bounty is put out for the shark. While a shark is caught it is not the one who has been terrorizing the community. However, the beaches open once again and there is another attack. Brody, along with oceanographer Matt Hooper and local fisherman Quint set out to find the shark.
In conclusion, there are notable differences and similarities between the book, and movie Frankenstein. The differences start with the education of the monster, the plot, the ending of the story, and the characteristics of the monster. The similarities dealing with the creation of the monster, and the turning point of the story. The differences and similarities preserve the genre themes, and the main points in both the story and the movie.
The first major difference I noticed was in the cinematography. In the original, Jewison used techniques that were new to the industry at the time. He used a split screen technique to enhance the action scenes by allowing for more than one point of view, giving the movie more suspense. However, in the remake, McTiernan chose not to use this technique or even any other that is newer to film making. Mctiernan's makes it easier for the viewer to follow the plot and focus in on what is going on in the movie. In doing this, the remake loses some of the intensity in it's action and suspense scenes.
In the movie “Jaws”, which is a 20th century film, the preying shark terrorizes the beaches of New England. After he is finally trapped, he is killed- but not in the same fashion as Grendel was. The shark was shot in the mouth and then blew up to do a CO2 tank he had swallowed. The way in which each antagonist was killed was in two very different ways: with and without weaponry, respectively.
Throughout the history of modern cinema, we as a people have seen various films that have caused fear, hope, laughter, love, and various other emotions. The movie Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, was a very well-written film, but the insignificant parts made me lose focus on what was occurring. I thought this movie lacked in a few fields such as special effects, acting and background illuminations. However, the special effects were well-organized for being created in 1975. Overall, I did not enjoy Jaws because of the talent the actors displayed and the organization of the scenes.
Both film and book are very popular when they were published ,and still interesting today their story forces you to go on and makes you never to stop. In the story Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell a renowned Huntsman falls off a yacht and finds out what it's like to be hunted. Also in the film High Noon made by Carl Foreman a marshal try's to protect his town from a gang of criminals. Both of these have similarities and differences on certain things such a settings, characters, as well as themes. There is many examples to what these stories both have in common or are different in.

key players of the film named Shawn Heinrichs works for Wild Aid as a marine conservationist. He states that “no other species illustrates what’s going on in the ocean better than sharks” which is significant because they predate dinosaurs and have survived four mass extinctions. However, humans have succeeded in cutting down their numbers by 90% within the Anthropocene (Racing Extinction, 2015). Isla Mujeres was the largest shark fishing island on the east coast of Mexico where at least 20 long liners were targeting sharks every day. The film discusses how this town was successfully converted from a hunting ground to one of the best places in the world for tourists to watch sharks.
