Ender’s Game “When I understand my enemy well enough to defeat him, then in that moment, I also love him.” A. E. Wiggin. This is the question at the heart of the novel by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game. The author of this quote is a young boy named Andrew Wiggins, who goes by the nickname Ender. Ender is genius and also, to his shame, a third child or a third, meaning his parents had to seek permission to have him since two children are standard. Ender wears a unique monitor so his thoughts can be monitored by the international military. They see potential in Ender and send Colonel Graff to his home to recruit him to attend battle school. Not that Ender or his parents have any choice. As a third, Ender is technically their property and cannot refuse. But can this child …show more content…

Graff singles him out and asks why he laughed. Ender explains that in zero gravity there is no right side. Graff tells the rest of the launchies that Ender is the only one with a brain in the group. By singling Ender out, Graff intentionally isolates him. It is a powerful scene in both the book and the movie, leaving Ender isolated to eat alone and study alone. Another similarity between the book and the movie is the mind game scene where Ender encounters the giant and the two cups. No matter what Ender does, he always loses. Graff wants to see how he will deal with frustration. Eventually Ender gets further than anyone else by choosing neither cup but by choosing violence instead. This scene shows us how smart and clever Ender is. Another similarity is shown when Ender becomes the commander of the Dragon Army. During the battle in the zero gravity chamber, Ender shows his tactical creativity to win against two armies, including Bonzo’s Salamander Army.
