Democratic vs. Republican During election times, most individuals are either on the democratic or republican side. Some people are willing to change sides based on who will best fulfill their political views, while others will always be democratic or republican and never change. Democrats and republicans are the same in a few ways but have many different views; some of which are taxes, gun control, healthcare, immigration, and abortion. This year, 2016, I have listened to quarrel debates, heard rumors about candidates, and have seen different protests on social media because of the election that just occurred. As this election has come to a conclusion, I have learned much more about the government and numerous dissimilarities between democrats and republicans. First, there are some social issues that unquestionably contrast among republicans and democrats. Republicans are very conservative on many of these issues. Republicans believe they need a system to verify that illegal immigrants do not retrieve the same benefits that legal citizens get. They finance sturdier implementation actions at the border. Also, republicans don’t want illegal immigrants to be delivered emancipation because it will just encourage more people to immigrate illegally. On the other side, democrats believe in administering passageways to citizenship for immigrants that came here illegally. Although they want illegal immigrants to become citizens, democrats want actions to take place beforehand like receiving a penalty, paying taxes, learning English, and clearing up the law. Though many things have changed, there are still many similarities between the first and second political party systems. The Democratic Party and the Democratic-Republican Party have a major similarity when it comes to economics. The Democratic Party did not support the American System because it called for a new national bank, uniform currency, and a protective tariff. The American System is the perfect example of the government influencing the economy, and the Democratic Party did not believe in this government intervention because they believed that it gave the wealthy even more privilege. Due to Diffen website, one dominant in the Southeastern United States, is now strongest in the Northeast, and Democratic candidates have been faring better in some southern states. Also, Democrats are liberal and left-leaning. They tend to favor an active role for government in society. The party has united with smaller liberal regional parties throughout the country, such as the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota.
The political views of the federalist and the republicans towards the government of the United States of America were different. The republicans stressed equality of rights among citizens allowing people to govern themselves. The federalists believed in a stronger government one in which was sovereign and had superior power over the local governments.
Energy and environmental issues are also another topic that both parties disagree on. Democrats support drilling for fossil fuels which is better for the environment. Republicans believe in expanded drilling which creates more energy at a cheaper cost. Democrats are advocates for using tax money to research solutions for alternative energy and Republicans just want to let the industry itself figure out the most practical solutions
In the United States we are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum; even further divided into political parties such as Republicans, on the right, and Democrats, on the left side. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics such as the economy, separation of church and state, abortion, and gun control.
The United States, comprised of much political diversity, has only two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists on March 20th, 1854, and is represented by its mascot, the elephant. Often referred to as the “Grand Old Party”, or GOP, Republicans favor customs that exude traditional Christian values with a platform based on American Conservatism. As a Christian myself, the values I share with Republican ideals are a main reason I side with the Republican Party.
Economics is the study of currency and how it is made and distributed through our economy. Taxation is one of those main issues in this category. The Democrats and Republicans both consider taxation a major issue but both have different ways they are trying to deal with the problem. The Democrats believe that extending tax cuts to the middle class families of America that make less than 250,000$ a year while raising taxes on the extremely wealthy and huge corporations to help parents pay for college (“Democrats Unveil”). While the Republican Party says it would “try to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower and middle-income taxpayers also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax” (“Democrats Unveil”). They both want to change the tax policy to try to help pay off our debt and or help Americans to live an easier life. Another Key issue in this category is Medicare. The formation of the Democratic-Republican Party started out as "a loose collection" of members who organized themselves to vote together consistently (Schultz). This unification of the party led to the change of leadership in America when Thomas Jefferson won the presidential election in 1800. The election resulted in the adoption of the Twelfth Amendment because of how well organized the party had become. The "Bloodless Revolution" ended with a tie between two Democratic-Republicans, Jefferson and Aaron Burr, causing the Federalists to cast the deciding vote for Jefferson. As a presidential candidate, Jefferson "carried politics to the people", in the form of publications and the use of newspapers (Schultz).

These everyday occurrences make the knowledge of political parties commonly known, especially as the two opposing political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. Republican and Democrats have existed for numerous years, predominantly due to pure tradition, and the comfort of the ideas each party presents. For years, the existence of two political parties has dominated the elections of the president, and lower offices such as mayor, or the House of Representatives. Fundamentally, this tradition continues from the very emergence of political parties during the election of 1796, principally between Federalist John Adams and Anti-federalist Thomas Jefferson. Prior to this election people unanimously conformed to the ideas of one man, George Washington, and therefore did not require the need for political parties.1 However, following his presidency the public was divided with opposing opinions, each arguing the best methods to regulate the country. Ultimately, the emergence of different opinions regarding the future of the United States involving the economy, foreign relations, ‘the masses,’ and the interpretation of the Constitution, led to the two political parties of the 1790s and the critical election of 1800.
The battle between the Democrats and the Republicans is a battle that has gone on ever since the 1900s. The only way that a political party can take over the house is if they are able to address the issues that relevant to the people. The United States is a country with a two-party structure, which is a political system where people give their votes largely to only two major parties, the Republican and Democrat Party; in which one or the other party can win a majority in the government. Even though the republicans and democrats have many similarities, they tend to be overshadowed by individual party ideas. With so many primary differences between the two parties, finding matters or problems that citizens agree upon can be difficult. However, not all people are either republican or democrat. Due to the similarities and differences within the parties, voters can fall into both political parties. Republicans tend to be more conservative, religious and seeking a better economy. Democrats are more liberal and desire greater good in terms of welfare for people. The republican and democrats have strong beliefs on certain issues such as immigration. Over the years republicans and democrats have stayed lobbying for immigration bill; however, the political parties have different viewpoints on application of the bill. The republicans and democrats want to help immigration as one but at different periods.
Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between.
