“If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life,” said by Marc Anthony. Work takes up a lot of time in your life. Because of that, one of my most important priorities is to find a job where I can enjoy doing it most of the time. Another priority for me is how much I make. I don’t want to have to worry about finances everyday and want to feel content with the amount of a variety of reasons. I choose civil engineer and software developer because the priorities matched. Both have interesting aspects of their work and, both pay enough. But these two professions have a big impact on society. Civil engineers help maintain the safety of streets and buildings while building new buildings for different purposes. At the same time, software developers build programs that help people. Both sounds critical to society today. A civil engineer does a variety of things at during a daily basis. A civil engineer designs, build, supervise, etc in both outside and in the office. They also manage and …show more content…
Software developers usually work with others on making and working on programs. They are the ones that make the apps we use today. This job is mostly a technical job, working with computers most of the time. In order to be successful in this job, I will need to be excellent at tech, be a critical thinker, be a good listener, and be able to read well. What I feel drawn to is that it doesn’t seem too stressful and not too boring. Currently, Omidyar Network has a job listing for a software developer. Its offering $100,000-$130,000 in salary compensation. The job task requires knowledge of computer language and 2 years of experience. I would keep track of data and fix problems that arise from programming. Overall, I would want to do what a software developer does on a daily basis. My interest of building programs is there and it seems like an actual fun
Since the inception of civilization, people have dedicated themselves to certain practices to obtain needed supplies. With the advancement of society, these practices have specialized into roles that society needed and have become jobs and careers. With these jobs and careers, people have struggled to find a difference between the two, if there is one. However, the two are very different. There are a multitude of differences between a job and a career, but the most distinct differences being the necessary skill, and dedication needed.
Also, no one wants to live a life with a occupation they don't like. Everyone should live how they want to live, live their dreams. To do that, they have to be willing to go through the hardships of life, to fail before they can succeed. No one should have to conform and just settle with something that’s not in their full potential. If you want to do something, something that’s important to you, you have to work for it.
In fact, it may be this same reflection that leads to an individual’s decision to prioritize practicality. Not all those who choose the practical path do it for themselves. Many may do it for their families, as a safe and stable means of supporting their loved ones. Others may take this opportunity to give back to their community through the ways they are most skilled. Instead of pursuing a single interest in a certain field, they choose to follow their callings.
People will argue that having a low-paying job and freedom is better than a high-paying job and a 60-hour workweek. However many including myself, don’t share the views of Hal Niedzviecki’s essay’s “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With”. Having a higher paying and longer hours provides much more income and allows for a lot more financial freedom. This freedom can help bring much more happiness into your life compared to the lower paying workweek. Hal Niedzviecki mentions many benefits to the easy jobs with low-paying workweeks in the following statement

...r occupations where one can dress stylist and dine at fine restaurants and climb the corporate ladder, there could not be a more honorable and satisfying career that a person could give to their community and their society.
A software engineer, simply put, is a well trained and versatile engineer. Software engineers are different from programmers, though, in many ways. Software engineers are trained and versed in the true discipline of any engineer and are capable of creating software and new technology. Software engineers design, create, test, and perfect new technology to be used in the world today. Software engineers are capable of creating and building robots, computers, and revolutionary technology. A software engineer is someone who is absorbed in developing computer software and technologies. They analyse prefabricated software and even create new software, personalized software for individual clients. A software engineer uses mathematical formulas and
Analyzing career theory is an important task, not only as an individual but also on a large scale. If everyone has the career they are best at and enjoy above all others, the world would be a much happier place. Imagine a world where each individual viewed work as not something they have to do, but as something they want to do. Productivity would increase at all levels. Charitable foundations and businesses would be abundant. Whereas this ideal may not be fathomable at this point, if each person used this information, it would be only a matter of time before we are moving in that harmonious direction.
In the book “Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell talks about meaningful work and relates it to higher pay he says, “If I offered you a choice being an architect for 75,000 a year or working in a toll booth for 100,000 a year which would you take”(150)? He asks this question to show the importance of working a job that is meaningful and makes one happy. $100,000 a year a year working a toll booth sounds good, but for how long? Nothing makes this job meaningful; your eight hour shift consists of sitting in a booth taking and handing people money. Your job becomes meaningless because there is nothi...
The structural-functional analysis of jobs in the U.S. is governed by the workforce stratification and technology. The more educated and diverse a society is the better society’s job market is served. This social economic separation of class has been both good and bad for society. Many workers at the lower levels of employment are both pleased and displeased with many aspects of work. Though this fact also holds true with most any job at any level, pay scale often compensates for endurance of a particular job type. The security of a person’s job also is an issue that in today’s economic times forces one to be prepared for change. This is to say that even if one’s field of expertise is needed today it may not be tomorrow. This type of ever-changing job market leads many to believe that another socio-economic change may occur at any time. This change was apparent with the transition into the industrial age and again in the information age. These concerns caused stress, various health issues, a...
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer software engineers are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2002–12 period. The starting salaries for computer engineers with a bachelor's degree can be higher than salaries of bachelor's degree graduates in many other occupations.
Being a Software Engineer is more than just programming. It’s a chance to help other people through the power of technology. Having this as a job gives engineers the power to influence other peoples life through programs that could help them with day to day tasks. Software Engineering is an expanding occupation, which means that more and more jobs are opening up for this position everyday. Also, one of the perks of this job is how much money you make. Software Engineering is a good job because, the market is expanding for it, it pays well, and this job can help other people.
The civil engineering field is about gathering and interpreting data, being able to give technical presentations to colleagues, team work to design and build a project, projects range from the design and construction of dams, bridges, buildings, roads, and water supply systems. In most cases the works of engineers are admired and sought after. Engineers play an important role in the development and improvement of a society. Yet, like other technical and non-engineering careers the civil engineers also face issues, for example, regarding ethics, high energy building consumption, increased soil and coastal erosion, inadequate water quality, traffic congestion, and some poor infrastructures resilience to disasters. Another example is that unfortunately in the United Kingdom, the civil engineering industry is highly fragmented with 93% of companies having 14 or fewer employees which is not always a great idea, as written by John Miles in Civil Engineering Informatics. There is also a need to implement new professional and educational approaches to new challenges and new implications that are needed for the twenty-first century society. This paper will introduce and explain five different issues that civil engineers are currently facing and elaborate about how these challenges interrelate to each other.
Most people imagine their dream job is to become a famous actor or a job they have seen done many times. Though because of the progression of technology I would be more suited in a field involving computers. My dream job is to become a successful software engineer because I have always been into computer systems, but can I fit this job, is the career life something I can manage and what opportunities should I go after when becoming a software engineer. Each time I notice how a program is used I wonder how can I make it become faster or more efficient. When you are using your cell phone or iPad there is usually an update at every month. This is because apple is improving the speed of your applications. A software engineer is sometimes overlooked, but without software engineer’s applications would either crash or would not improve. Although most people may feel looking at a computer all day and trying to fix it is uninteresting, I find it challenging
Throughout my lifetime, I have never had to think very much about the working world and everything that went with it. All through high school I took classes I liked or thought would be interesting to me, but never thought that all of those classes were preparing me for what was to come. Before I knew it, it was time to go to college. The four years of high school had flown by and now it was time to choose a major for college. I had never given much thought as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The only real occupations that I had really gotten to experience were teaching, the jobs that my parents had, and others such as doctors, dentist, most of the occupations that everyone sees while they are growing up. When I finally decided on my major, I chose engineering, but I didn’t know if I would like it or not. The only prior knowledge I had about it was the fact that my grandfather was an electrical and chemical engineer, and that my parents and teachers said that I would be good at engineering. Recently I have been interested in civil engineering, but what does one do with such a degree? What opportunities are available to a person with a degree in civil engineering on the job market? The broad curriculum that covers many different fields of engineering make civil engineering a major that allows a person to work in nearly any field they wish.
