Cheryl strayed and Chris McCandless have had similar stories that ended up contrarily. To compare their lives, there are three main aspects that has to be taken in consideration. First, the way that they grew up with their families, and how they became stressed and depressed over the time. Second, what their escape was to overcome their depression. Third, what they actually did and what was the result of their actions.
Both of Cheryl and Chris grew up in a similar conditions. Cheryl have had some issues when she was young specifically from her father’s side. Her father was a heavy drinker; and he had been in many arguments with her mother. In some occasions, her mother was being hit and they had to leave the house for sometime before coming

Cheryl suffered from a deep depression after the death of her mother. She felt that she was missing something in her life and she needed to cover it up as soon as possible. First, she became an heroin addict. Her addiction was developed after nurses were giving her some morphine injections as less as they can, but she wanted more and they refused (cherylstrayed). Afterwords, with the help of her friend “Joe”, she was offered some heroin and that 's how she started her addiction. Also, in a way to relief herself, she started to have sex with random people despite the fact that she is married. In fact, the first time that she cheated on her husband was just a week after her mother’s death (thesunmagazine). In one of the scenes of the movie Wild, she had sex with a random customer at the restaurant that she worked at. On the other hand, Chris thought that the key to solve his problems was him being isolated from everyone else. Much less, he didn’t care about anything that is related with money. For example, after his graduation, his parents wanted to buy him a new car, but, he refused to accept rudely (Into the Wild). Additionally, his parents gave him some money to cover his school tuitions that he donated all of it plus his life savings to the OXFAM charity
It is true that every mothers and fathers strive to give their children the finest development of knowledge so that it supports them blossom in their career. Two writers who have opposing views based on the parenting techniques of children are Amy Chua, in her article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior?” and David Brooks, in his article “Amy Chua is a Wimp.” Both of them have similarities and differences in bias in their article; there are differences in their tone and the way which they utilize evidences, but both of them depend heavily on evidence to prove their points.
He left and “walked into the wild”, as he said, to escape his problems (Krakauer, 69). He never confronted his dad about his feelings. Carine McCandless talks about this personality trait in Chris saying, “Chris was the sort of person who brooded on things. If something bothered him; he wouldn’t come right out and say it” (Krakauer, 122). He changed his name, He wasn’t trying to take pride in his “adventure”. It was an extra and unnecessary precaution to ensure that his problems would not affect his escape. Chris McCandless changed his name and then continued his life ignoring all of the problems he had ever
According to the book Into The Wild and Chris’s parents “there was always a little wanderlust in the family, and it was clear early on that Chris had inherited it” (108). Billie’s dad Loren Johnson and Chris both loved the wildlife, Loren was charmed by Chris and Chris adored his grandfather When Chris was eight Walt took him on a mountain climbing trip where he carried his own backpack, hiking the mountains became a father-son tradition. While on his trip to Alaska many people that he meet offered him stuff so he could survive there but he would always deny their offer. One person that had offered him rice did not accept a “no” so Chris was forced to take it. The last person to see Chris on his journey was a union electrician called Jim Gallien. Jim was on his way to Anchorage, Jim thought Chris was crazy to think he could survive in the forests of Alaska, but Chris’s love for nature and his adventurous spirit were too strong to fear all the warnings people kept telling him. From just these few things that Chris was introduced to made him love the wild and he became
Chris was very likable as others described him, but he also lived by his own rules. Carine,
According to others, Chris McCandless was inherently selfish. Please, let’s beg to differ, for goodness sake, he was a grown man! It was his life and he was living it the way he wanted to. Chris gave his sister fair warning. He bid to her, “Since they won’t ever take me seriously, for a few months after graduation I’m going to let them think they are right, I’m going to let them think that I’m “coming around to see their sides of things” and that our relationship is stabilizing. And then, once the time is right, with one abrupt, swift action I’m going to completely knock them out of my life...” (Krakauer 64) He knew what he had to do. He had to show his parents how they had made him feel his whole life. As a graduation present they offered him a new car, his old Datsun apparently was to their standards. Chris became infuriated. That was his pride and joy, how dare them try and take that away! They ignored what he was saying, as he did many times before, he o...
As stated above, some critics believe that Chris McCandless was a very admirable person. He was a brave man because he actually went out and followed his dreams instead of leaving them as visions he only saw in his sleep. Most people would never do what McCandless did because it is too risky. He did what he wanted, and did not...
America have a long history of black’s relationship with their fellow white citizens, there’s two authors that dedicated their whole life, fighting for equality for blacks in America. – Audre Lorde and Brent Staples. They both devoted their professional careers outlying their opinions, on how to reduce the hatred towards blacks and other colored. From their contributions they left a huge impression on many academic studies and Americans about the lack of awareness, on race issues that are towards African-American. There’s been countless, of critical evidence that these two prolific writers will always be synonymous to writing great academic papers, after reading and learning about their life experience, from their memoirs.
As I began to get deeper into the story and they began to introduce Chris’s parents, Billie and Walt into the story they seemed very uptight and didn’t support Chris’s opinion on life. They wanted to control Chris’s life and hold on to their little boy. “Walt tried to control Chris who is freely independent” While Walt tried to control Chris that only caused Chris to distance himself even more. I got the impression that since Chris and his parents didn’t see eye to eye they hit heads. “In fact both Walt and Chris are stubborn which leads to a great clash between them” which really portrays their relationship with each other. I believe the situation with his parents only pushed him more towards leaving his ordinary life and going off the grid. His parents trying to keep a grip on Chris’s life only pushed him away even more.
All in all, it is interesting how the trials of life can lead a person into an awakening that inspires millions. Many people believe that walking “into the wild” to live off the land and find himself alone in nature was arrogant, foolish and irresponsible. Chris lacks of knowledge about the wild was a major factor in his death. Chris did not plan how he will survive in the wilderness without proper equipments. He misunderstood that he would have no problem in setting in the wild. Chris immature manner and decisions lead him to starvation and ultimately death. If he planned it out in the beginning he would have saved his life.
Chris McCandless took a gamble with his life and as a result, he lost it. McCandless was a very adventurous, free spirited, young man that chose to do anything and everything he set his mind to. He was born into a family that he did not quite fit in with, it was a family of money with no emotions for love other than that for money of course. Due to his personal issues and the rebellion of his youth McCandless decided to go on an adventure traveling to Alaska and ultimately sacrificing his life from his risk taking tendencies. Although it may be true that McCandless could potentially suffer from a type of mental illness, people should consider that he is completely sane because he ultimately just wanted to travel and find himself while doing
Chris is able to implementing certain events from the present and past to explain his problems. He was able to identify the origin of his behavioral problems, by working through his current story to re-author a new story (Murdock 2013).
With April six at the time she was taken away from home, she was able to remember all the things her parents did like drinking “taking medicine," having parties, and seeing her mom “kissing” other people “insert quote”. When April is older she remembers all of these things and realizes that it can ruin her life if she starts going down the same path. When April was living in the DeRosier house she was reminded of her parents behaviour because she was being taunted by the DeRosier kids “insert quote”. That is when April feels ashamed of what her family did and realizes that she doesn 't want to end up in the same position, which would be native girl syndrome. She also realizes that her parents were to dependent on alcohol that they couldn 't even stop to get their children back. April feels that her parents didn 't care about her and Cheryl. With Cheryl only four when she was taken away from home she has no memory of her parents. She doesn’t know about the drinking, the parties, or the cheating that her parents did. This is one reason why Cheryl went down the native girl syndrome path. By not knowing what these things did to her parents, she dose not have the sense to stay away when she is
Due to series of unfortunate events that occurred in Cheryl’s life, she hit rock bottom as she ended her life in a way no one wants theirs to end, which is to commit suicide. Had she had more support and better influences in her life, but mostly if she had made better choices in her early adulthood, she perhaps would have lived a much happier life.
Before Chris McCandless had ventured off into the woods, he discovered that his parents had kept a secret and there was more to his family than he thought. He is described as someone that, “seemed like a kid who was looking for something, looking for something, just didn’t know what it was yet.” (Krakauer, 42). People can easily make hasty decisions in a spurt of anger or sorrow which is why Chris did not take into consideration the feelings of the people that cared about him. Even though a person may be dealing with something unfortunate that they might not even understand, it is important that he does not push away the people close to him because they are the ones that will help him move passed his hardships. While personal struggles get in the way of making the right choices, personal gratification can be just as
Chris McCandless’ relationship with his father was not ideal. Built up resentment caused by unfaithfulness to his mother caused Chris to cut ties with his father. For most of Chris’ life, his father played
