Beowulf
Overtime, people have adjusted the way certain books relate to movies. Not everything that they display in a movie was in the book they took it from. Perhaps it had the same concept or idea but it wasn’t exactly they same situation or event that did happen in the book. Or maybe it’s the other way around, though that rarely ever occurs. Because of the emotional sophistication of modern audience the creators of the movie Beowulf vastly charge the storyline from the Epic Story.
The story of Beowulf was originally a old Pagan story. It’s purpose was to show heroic deeds on how a man, named Beowulf, killed a monster named Grendel, his mother and a dragon. It shows its character loyalty to his soldiers or people, the importance of honor

And the worst part of movies is when they make a movie out of the book it’s modified from the original story. While the story of Beowulf is about someone being heroic and what one must do in the movie it’s more lead to entertain the people and loses focus on what the story was intentionally made for. In movies they tend to break the rules a little and see it as what would an actual person do. A person lies in real life and extend the “truth” to seem as superior or what people call it “ all that.” The monster Grendel in the movie was different. Rather than just thinking of a monster Grendel look almost human like and had sensitive hearing which was his weak point. Yes, he did get his arm off but it wasn’t ripped off rather than crushed between the entrance doors of the mead hall. There also was an argument between Unferth and Beowulf about how Beowulf lost against Becca in a swimming competition. Beowulf lost because he had to defeat the monsters that were there. In the movie he exaggerated how many he killed. Once he said 3 then he said 9. So the honesty among a hero wasn’t there. He was still a strong person and was loyal but not completely. Once he defeated Grendel he had to kill Grendel’s mother but was seduced and never did. Then he lied to Hrothgar’s people that he killed her. He in fact gave a son to the ,sea hag, Grendel’s mother. On the last battle against the dragon, Beowulf’s son, …show more content…
One was made to give stories about a hero and what it was expected from them. While another one was intended to just entertain an audience. Stories have changed overtime and it’s purpose to show how things weren’t meant to be. Even if movies aren’t like the book it still shows the old pagan
Grendel in the Epic of Beowulf is portrayed as a monster, a creature that has no thoughts on who he kills. While in the movie Beowulf and Grendel(Gunnarsson 2005); he is much more human-like. In parts of the movie, thoughts are led to believe that in fact he is not out to kill random people he only harms those who have “hurt him”.This, in fact, leads to believe that Grendel from the film really wasn’t the bad guy:it shifted towards the fact that Hrothgar was the bad guy for killing Grendel 's father This ties to the fact that as we modernize we tend to need a reason to do things, most people will not endure things if in the end the end result they won 't benefit from it. Nevertheless, the film has changed the perspective and/ or natural view that one as a reader would have taken from the
Although Beowulf might have been a great warrior, usually people do not think that he is the greatest warrior from a story. Beowulf had the strength and the tactics to take down tons and tons of men on his own, but did not have the wisdom of other warrior figures. Beowulf was mainly strength and toughness, and sometimes a warrior needs to have some type of knowledge to ever be able to fight. A great example to Beowulf would be Luke Skywalker. Luke is in a story that is not the same type of story but, has the same concept. The only main difference would have to be the setting and the type of movie. Beowulf is a warrior that is considered super human and doesn't really belong anywhere, because he is not truly con...
Many different works of literature are later remade into a visual piece. The visual versions, however, do not usually tell the story the same as exact as their written counterparts. In the case of the epic poem, Beowulf, this is also true. There are many similarities between the movie and the poem, and there are also many differences.
When Grendel first walk into the hall he lets an innocent soldier get eaten alive and acts like nothing happens. In the end he killed Grendel but didn’t make sure that everything else as safe. He just assumed that the job in Herot was done and zoned out. If he had kept his guard up he could have stopped Grendel’s Mom from killing Hrothgar's best friend. Beowulf didn’t plan and in return, failed in completely protecting Herot. He might have killed Grendel, but his mother still killed more innocent people.
Beowulf’s characteristics seen on screen are very different compared to Beowulf’s characteristics in the Anglo-Saxon poem. Beowulf in the film Beowulf
Beowulf’s life was truly epic struggle. The monsters he battled made it so. Grendel and the dragon, capable of crushing men physically, stood for evils that could just as easily crush men in spirit. These two beasts represented society’s greatest fears, as well as detriments, and Beowulf fearlessly took them on. Grendel taught the hero a valuable lesson about maintaining one’s humanity in a world dominated by the dogs of war. The dragon, showed Beowulf’s mortality, his imperfection, but the hero eradicates it nonetheless, saving his people from not only physical threat, but sin. Bringing in such spiritual and moral dimensions, these two beasts certainly give the story of Beowulf depth.
The poem Beowulf was written between 700-750 A.D. by an unknown author set in Denmark and Sweden, other wise known as Scandinavia. The original Beowulf only exists in one copy, and was severely damaged by a fire. The poem was an epic with many Christian references throughout the poem. In the poem, Grendel attacks the people of the Danes at night for the loud celebrating in Herot (mead hall), that drives him mad with rage, bringing death and destruction. Beowulf kills both Grendel, and his mother, then returns to his land to later become the king of the Geats. While in the 2007 film, Beowulf kills Grendel, is seduced by Grendel’s mother, lies about killing her, and becomes king of the Danes.
Beowulf is an interesting story in that it has a meaning that is firmly rooted in fantasy creatures based in mythical origins while providing insight into religious ideals and practices of the time. It also speaks of tradition and the struggle of man against things perceived as evil. In this tradition especially, Beowulf is an incredible allegory regarding the struggle of good and evil in the Christian tradition.
When the story begins, Beowulf has gone to the land of the Danes to kill Grendel for the people, not for the glory. Beowulf brings his own hand picked, group of soldiers with him throughout his battles, and refuses to allow help from others. Beowulf also tells the readers he will not use weapons unless necessary. Before the battle against Grendel, a Denmark officer states, “A chosen warrior who bravely does battle with the creature haunting our people, who survives that horror unhurt, and goes home bearing our love” (ln. 210). Also, when Beowulf’s men abandon him in the battle against the dragon, he does not choose to run in fear, but to continue fighting. In this moment much like in his past, Beowulf shows how honorable he really
In the movie, this version of Beowulf does what the other Beowulf would have never done for a monster he just finished slaying. He builds a memorial in honor of Grendel. This shows Beowulf's remorse for killing him. An emotion the Beowulf from the epic didn't seem to have. Beowulf also shows mercy on Grendel's son when Beowulf decides not to kill him. This mercy is something that was not present at all in the epic's portrayal of Beowulf. If a deed would bring glory to the name of Beowulf, then he wouldn't hesitate to do it.
In the beginning on the movie, Grendel came to the mead hall while the people were awake. In the book, Grendel came to the mead hall when the men were asleep. When Beowulf arrived to the mead hall, there was a man doubting that he could defeat Grendel. Another difference is that in the movie Beowulf killed all of the sea monsters while he was in a swim meet. In the book, Beowulf did not participate in a swim meat. He just mentioned the fact that he had killed many monsters. When Grendel and Beowulf fought in the book, Grendel did not die until the second fight between the two. But in the book, Grendel died in the first battle between him and Beowulf. A very important difference between the book and the movie is that Grendel’s mom seduced Beowulf and had a child, which turned out to be the dragon he fights at the end of the book and the movie. These are the contradicting details that i have identified between the book and the
There are many differences that makes Beowulf in the book, differ from the movie. Three would be the mother’s personalities, the battle of Grendel’s mother, and the death of the Geats warrior, Beowulf. The mother, according to the textbook; the mother in the movie plays an important role in the movie. During the battle of Grendel’s mother, there was one in the text but not in the movie. The death of Beowulf within the text and movie serves as a contrast, for Beowulf understood his wrong doing in the movie.
Have you read or watched “Beowulf?” The textbook version and the movie are different in many ways, but are also similar. There are a lot of action, sad, and joyful scenes involved in both. “Beowulf” contains a bad guy and a good guy, just like any other movie/book does. It is very interesting and you will not have to fight to stay focused because your attention definitely will be kept. The differences between the book and the movie are actions such as suicide, attacks, and seduction.
The movie Beowulf is an old ancient story based on the Anglo Saxons and Monks based on their time. The movie and the text have a lot of differences between the movie and the text, people have to completely pay attention to the movie to understand each and every moment and to get the whole point across. Beowulf is supposed to be the great hero in this movie/story.
Beowulf’s first accomplishment as an epic hero was his battle with Grendel. Grendel was a huge beast, a descendent of Cain, who ruthlessly murdered innocent Danes because he felt pity for himself. Upon hearing of the Dane’s problem, Beowulf set off to help the Danish without having been called upon. Even though Beowulf had men backing him, He drew battle with Grendel alone and without armor or weapons. Yet, Beowulf emerged victorious with the arm of Grendel as his trophy. Beowulf then went on to kill Grendel’s vengeful mother and a huge fire-breathing dragon who thought it had been done wrong by the Geats. Alas, the killing of the dragon would be Beowulf’s last great battle for the dragon took Beowulf’s life in the struggle for his own.
