Beowulf, his name is one synonymous with heroism, bravery and loyalty. When Hollywood released this latest edition in the retelling of the famous epic poem, they took various liberties. Throughout the film they kept certain aspects of the play so it is obvious to recognize the source material. An excellent example is two of the main characters, Beowulf and Hrothgar, both who behave differently than their poetic counterparts. These various differences ends up changing how their version plays out, how the story develops. In the Epic Poem Hrothgar is displayed as a strong, wise, caring leader with a loving marriage. While in the film he is shown to have become a fat drunk who fornicates on several occasions, once with Grendel’s mother to produce her wicked offspring. Though the king is not the only one to change, the great Geat hero Beowulf suffers many changes to his morals and personality as well. His counterpart in the Epic is shown to be an indomitable man with no corruptibility and unwavering loyalty to his lords. The 2007 film depicts him as a man who wishes to only have power and is corruptible, as shown when he mates with Grendel’s mother to produce the Dragon. These multiple changes show that as a society the wishes for a great narrative have changed from wishing to hear of these great men’s accomplishments to wanting to see them broken to their core to see truly what their souls …show more content…
This film managed to capture his world and all the horror and beauty that it contained within it while changing some things to keep up with today’s audience. Hrothgar is changed from a strong, wise and a faithful husband to a loud, drunk womanizer who fornicates with monsters to create more horrors. Beowulf is changed from an incorruptible hero with unwavering loyalty to his king to a man that is willing to cast aside his loyalty in exchange for the promise of kinghood and power. Monsters, such as Grendel, are changed too, so that they may be seen in a light that makes them seem human and relatable. Grendel himself is changed from a monster who only wants the destruction of Hrothgar’s men to a human-monster hybrid that seeks affection and feels shame and pain. Grendel’s mother is changed from a hideous, horrible witch to a beautiful seductress who seduces Beowulf and Hrothgar with promises of power in order to birth two powerful sons. The Dragon is changed to be Beowulf’s son, but he keeps the same destructive rampage that leads to the death of his father and many of his people. Along with their personality changing so did their fates to make it seem more relatable. Beowulf dies after single handedly fighting the dragon at the cost of removing his arm. Hrothgar names Beowulf his heir and kills himself by jumping into the sea. Grendel and the Dragon both die at the
There are many books, movies and poems that fall into the category of epic. Although majority of the epic films are based on a hero who keeps the entire city safe and helps as many people as they can. Now that is exactly the film The 13th Warrior. The film follows the key events of the Epic Beowulf. The 13th Warrior demonstrates pretty much the same aspect of epic, along with the speculations of a hero, and how he overpowered his enemy. Unfortunately the main characters in The 13 Warrior and Beowulf are different. However the circumstances that they are put in front of and the behavior of both heros remain related. While the two pieces have a lot in common they still have their differences.

There are so many similarities between the events and characters in the poem Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, an Iceland saga representing 1000 years of oral traditions prior to the 1300’s when it was written. These similarities are so numerous that they cannot be attributed solely to coincidence.
In the poem Beowulf, which Seamus Heaney translates to modern English, the character Beowulf bravely conquers all enemies thrown at him, including sea monsters and other perilous creatures. This allows him to gain fame throughout Geatish and Danish lands. His righteous deeds cause the previous heir, Hygelac, to appoint Beowulf to king before he dies, and Beowulf bravely leads his country until he perishes protecting it. On the other hand, in The Last Kingdom, by Bernard Cornwell, the Danes capture a young English boy by the name of Uhtred, and integrate him into their war driven society. Uhtred learns various battle tactics by general Ubba, whose ruthlessness in battle grants him fame and riches. When Uhtred goes back to the English,
What is hero? A hero, under the Merriam-Webster definition, is a person who is admired for brave/great acts or fine qualities. This is a very broad definition that combines both ancient and modern belief of what --or who-- a hero should be. Beowulf is an epic poem that focuses on an Anglo-Saxon hero. There are many similarities and differences between the movie "Beowulf and Grendel", to the poem. Major differences between the movie and the poem would be Grendel himself. In the poem, he is described as an evil monster born from two demons. In the movie, Grendel is actually human, but known as a troll to the warriors and Danes. The poem doesn’t give the background of Grendel or show how the Danes killed his father and the possible reason of his revenge, like in the movie. If the witch, Selma, was not included in the storyline of the movie, the audience would not have known key information that she was used to show from more flashbacks. The witch gives more of an idea about Grendel’s past life that could have been the possibility to reasons for his actions. Some major similarities are the battles. Both epics include the battles between Beowulf and Grendel, as well as Beowulf and Grendel’s mother. The end results are the same, leading to their death, but the journey and process to the two tales are different.

Do people ever talk about superheroes, and monsters? Especially people into comic books and children. Every child, even adults, have a superhero they look up to, or a role model they want to grow up to be like. Superheroes are everywhere from movies to books. Children even sit in their room playing with toy superheroes, hoping one day they can be just like them. Even hundreds of thousands of years ago there were superheroes! A long time ago in the Anglo-Saxon Period there was a brave and loyal hero! His name was Beowulf, and everyone looked up to him. This hero definitely brought peace to many people, and if it wasn’t for the mighty hero Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxons would have been terrorized forever. Therefore, the times were hard before Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon warriors always stood for three values, and the time was changed without monsters.
Beowulf outlines turmoil between three opponents: Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the Dragon. These separate discords each serve to fulfill different metaphoric purposes. Grendel’s character epitomizes the adverse persona of how an Anglo-Saxon warrior should not be. His mother represents everything that a woman during the time era should seldom be. Lastly, the Dragon embodies all the values that an Anglo-Saxon king should not dare retain. Without a doubt, the symbolic implications of the monsters in Beowulf bring the context to a new level of understanding.
Beowulf represents what a modern hero truly is rather than Dante the pilgrim, because he displays qualities of courage, pride, and humility. In order to be considered a modern hero the individual must demonstrate these particular qualities, and courage, pride, and humility should be reflected in the actions they make.
“In my youth I engaged in many wars”, Beowulf boasts to his warriors, which is certainly true. Throughout his life, he faces many deadly foes, all of which he handily defeats, save one. His story focuses on the most challenging, as well as morally significant of foes, Grendel and the dragon. These creatures reveal much about society as well as Christian virtue at the time. Beowulf is not only at risk of losing his life, but his humanity, virtue, and even spirituality.

King Hrothgar once again looks toward Beowulf to take care of another monster. To get ready for this battle Beowulf wears armor and uses the Horting sword which has never lost in battle. Once again Beowulf shows his courage by deciding to go to the bottom of the monster filled swamp and fight alone. Fighting off monsters on his way down, Beowulf reached the bottom where he was met by Grendel 's mother. He tried to cut her head off with Horting, but she is too strong.
