Psychoanalysis/Behaviorism schools of psychology
Psychoanalysis is a school of research and practice in psychology that was proposed by Sigmund Freud between the years 1856 and 1939. Specifically, Sigmund argued that patients can be cured by evoking consciousness in unconscious thoughts. As such, this field aims at determining repressed emotions in patients with depression and anxiety disorders. On the other hand, Behaviorism attracted a main stream attention between 1920 and 1950. Particularly, behaviorist approach notes that a person’s behavior is directly linked to their environment. Implied, at birth a human mind is a “blank slate”. Despite different approaches in the two schools of psychology research and practice, there are some common grounds as discussed below.

As such, these theories were shaped by the happenings that occurred at their prime time. Particularly, much of psychoanalysis emerged from German Schools, anti-Semitic prevalence as well as role of women in the society. In regard to social influence, Sigmund was factored insights of German Schools in treatment approaches while he opted for medicine due to anti-Semitism at the time in Germany. Additionally, this school of psychology was highly influenced by other intellects such as Rudolf Chrobak and Jean-Martin in regard to role of sex in neurotic disorders. On the other hand, Behaviorism was developed in U.S in which case social and intellectual context in the country influenced this psychology approach. For instance, between the years 1920 and 1950, English school of thought in U.S was highly regarded. As such, it formed basis of behavioral psychology in regard to scientific approach to control human behavior. The psychodynamics theory which was introduced by Freud to understand the human mind and psyche, reached a new level in the continuous analysis from therapists. Psychodynamics originally has been explained as a study of various psychological forces that affect human behavior which is related to early experiences. It specifically discusses the connection between the conscious and subconscious motivations. The theory was further analyzed and developed by Melanie Klein, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler. Based on the theory, the psychodynamic therapy evolved to help patients through psychoanalysis. With time other therapies like individual, group and family therapy evolved to offer treatment by understanding the present day complexities in more detail. The main aim of the therapy is self –awareness through identifying the various influences of many past events in life. The therapies are continuously evolving since it was introduced by Freud to help in solving a variety of psychological disorders within people.
Sigmund Freud was a very intriguing man; his philosophies and ideas have contributed in today’s medical as well as mental practices in various ways. Freud was a trendsetter when it came to psychoanalytic, and his theories as well as his practices changed the world of psychology, and some of his ideas may have caused controversy in the public views yet it doesn’t change the fact that Freud open the doors to future psychology professionals in abundance. In this paper I will discuss Freud’s Origins and education. I will also summarize his career on the development of psychoanalysis. Last but not least I will discuss his theories that have fallen out of favor with many modern psychologists as well as my believes in why did it occurred?
The field of psychology is a discipline, originated from many branches of science. It has applications from within a complete scope of avenues, from psychotherapy to professional decision-making. The flexibility and versatility of this field reflects its importance and demands in-depth analysis. Psychology was a division of philosophy until it developed independent scientific disciplines. The history of psychology was a scholarly study of the mind and behavior that dates back to the beginning of civilization. There are important details from previous theory psychologist, research have contributed to behaviorism approaches and have contributed towards specific current behavioral practices. Contemporary behavior therapy began to emerge into distinct practical and core learning theories concerning the needs and knowledge engaging cultural and professional differences.

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was an Austrian neurologist who created and developed an entirely new approach to discover about the personality and the subconscious of the human. His creation in the psychology field was “at once a theory of the human psyche, a therapy for the relief of its ills, and an optic for the interpretation of culture and society” (Jay). Sigmund Freud is regarded as one of the most influential and controversial characters of the twentieth century due to his discoveries in many aspects of the field of psychology included Freud’s self-analysis that he left behind.

The theory has become one of the most significant psychological approaches and its originator, Sigmund Freud, has become a major influence in modern psychology. The psychodynamic approach largely focuses on motivation and past experiences which develop and individual’s personality. Freud used the iceberg metaphor to outline the three states of consciousness and argued that only twenty percent of the mind represents the conscious. In addition he theorised that there was a pre-conscious mind which represents general memory. Finally, the unconscious mind which is essentially the reservoir of repressed or hidden experiences and desire.

I chose Behaviorism over the other aspects because I believe behavior determines human personality and is very interesting. You can tell what one is by his behavior, and one behaves according to what place he has in society. By doing this paper on Behavior, I hope to get a better understanding of, if behavior develops a personality or if personality guides behavior. I also see behaviorism helping me in the future with my personal and professional career by understanding human personality and behavior better than I do.
