Many authors use their own life experiences or situations when writing certain literary works, such as a poem or short story. One is able to see how this statement is true with D.H. Lawrence’s literary works, “A Rocking-Horse Winner” and “Piano”. Both of Lawrence’s literary works displays a persona of a little boy, which very well represents the inner character of himself. Lawrence uses biographical aspects in both his short story and poem that portray the emotions he felt throughout his childhood. Although, both these works displays similar aspects when representing a biographical view of Lawrence’s life, they differ in the type of relationship that is shown between the boy and his mother. The short story “A Rocking-Horse Winner” and “Piano” The story “A Rocking-Horse Winner” shows a boy who is stressed to win the love of his mother because of their financial situation. In order for the boy to win the adoration of his mother, he had to ride his wooden horse to get his luck; the boy’s luck is what causes him to make the winning bets that will provide him with the money his mom wants to have. Eventually, the boy is taunted by the phrase “there must be more money” (Lawrence, 235), which makes him think that he needs to win his mother more money in order for him to gain her love. D.H. Lawrence grew up in a financially unstable family, allowing him to feel the destructive outcomes that money can have on a family’s relationship, “Lawrence’s unhappiness as a child was caused by the fierce quarrels between his parents amid their grinding poverty” (Moore, Roberts). As we can see from Moore and Roberts’ book, Lawrence grew up in a financially unstable family, just like the little boy in “A Rocking-Horse Winner”. This displays a perfect example of how Lawrence incorporated his own personal life experiences within his literary One is able to see by the facts and evidence that were given in the short story “A Rocking-Horse Winner” and the poem “Piano”, that Lawrence always displays multiple personas that represent himself. Both of these literary works display a character in his adolescent years and the relationship he had with his mother. Although, both these works display such truth, they differ in the type of relationship that is present in the short story and poem. Lawrence used the multiple emotions he felt growing up in a financially unstable family as the main source for his plots, in his writings “A Rocking-Horse Winner” and

...given up the lottery fools and suggests that the rain may stop coming for them. In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” the mother feels that "she felt she must cover up some fault," and even though there's never any particular person forcing her to try and prove her worth by having more, she feels that nebulous need. She wants the "discreet servants" and to be seen as part of the upper class, and her son, understanding his mother's needs, chooses to sacrifice his life.
Narrative attitude has a large impact on the way a novel reads. It is what makes the reader feel for the narrator, connect to the story, and experience the words on the page in a moving and profound way. However, in James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, the narrator appears to not be emotional in order to focus the reader’s attention on the real purpose of the novel.
People go through life wanting to achieve their full potential; however, many never take a moment to analyze what may affect how their life turns out. In this essay, I will be identifying and analyzing the three most significant points of comparison shared by the character Harry in Hemingway’s “Snows of Kilimanjaro” and the narrator of T.S Elliot’s poem “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock”. The character Harry in “Snows of Kilimanjaro” has lived a good life and has traveled throughout many countries in Europe. Even though he pursued a career in writing, he is not well accomplished because he is drawn towards living a lazy luxurious life. While in Africa with his wife, he faces a huge conflict, which causes him to be regretful for how he has chosen to live is life. The narrator of T.S Elliot’s poem “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock” enters the dynamic consciousness of its character Alfred Prufrock whose feelings, thoughts, and emotions are displayed in an
In the “Rocking-Horse Winner,” D.H. Lawrence wrote about the house and the people inside as if they represents society. The events and characters in the story demonstrates when people in life that are obsessed with money will have the wrong values in life. The obsessiveness will often lead people results in tragedy. The author is trying to tell us there ae more to life than just materialist things like money. No one in this world isn’t in need of money. We work our entire life to get income for our satisfying needs. Ones can differ from other. One will work hard for money to satisfy just their needs, while others would go above and beyond to reach their dream homes or dream cars. And those are different types of obsessiveness. Meanwhile, in my family it’s the total opposite. We value hard work and education
Ernest’s early years built him into a strong character. It sculpted him to handle harsh or extreme situations. Ernest was forced to do labor on a plantation, ironically, Ernest’s ancestors were raised on the same plantation that he was. Ernest’s Parents were separated when he was young. He was part of the fifth generation of his family to be raised there. He was lifted by his impaired aunt. At the young age of nine he began picking cotton, and he was a student for approximately five to six months out of the year. (“ Twentieth century American literature”).
The short story, "Rocking-Horse Winner", and the movie based on it contrast considerably. When the written story has ended the movie continues with ideas, which may not come from the author. Three major differences of the two are: the mother, the father, and the ending. In the movie the mother, Hester, is portrayed as a loving and self-sacrificing person. While in the short story she is exposed to be a cold-hearted, and greedy person. Another instance where the short story and movie differ is the role of the father.
In "The Rocking Horse Winner" D. H. Lawrence tells us about the traumatic downfall of an upper middle class family struggling to maintain appearances through habitual overspending. Both the parents with common jobs and "expensive tastes" (pg.646) exploit all their resources to give their family the best; however, it was only to retain their high status in the society. "The Rocking Horse Winner" depicts a common demon we all face; greed, society's need for more possessions and money often drives people to do drastic things. The magnificently decorated house had always been haunted by the unspoken phrase, "there must be more money" (pg.646). "Nobody said it aloud. Just as no one says: We are breathing! In spite of the fact that breath is coming and going all the time." (pg.647) "They heard it at Christmas, when the expensive and splendid toys filled the nursery. Behind the shinning modern rocking-horse, behind the smart dolls house, a voice would start whispering: There must be more money!"(pg.646).The house cried with pain as it pitie...
The true irony, however, is revealed that the town represents false morals. This hard truth shocks readers and changes the setting from that of a happy and content one, to a setting of turmoil and unease. In “The Rocking Horse Winner” the author uses the setting to develop a stronger foundation of the story. Lawrence, uses the town that he created as the setting to generate more meaning. This allowed the readers to feel more connected to the story and characters. Which created an emotional relationship between the readers and the story.
In the two texts being analyzed the main themes are social injustice and Materialism. Even though these themes are different they both deal with financial standing. This paper will be looking at two texts, ‘the lesson’ and ‘Rocking horse winner’ in order to generate a final conclusion as to why both of them relate to one another.‘Rocking horse winner’ is a short story about a Materialistic mother that eventually causes her sons death, in his attempt to win his mothers love. The texts closes in on a well off middle class family. An overly materialistic mother who neglected her children's need for love and a father who's ‘prospects never materialized’. Placed in this situation the children noticed that the mother had a personal problem and cared more for money than she did for them. Paul the son, is determined to win his mothers love.
According to Wart, “Piano” expresses Lawrence’s personal response when a “song stirs memories of childhood and his mother,” involuntary as these memories may be. However, though it may be true that we should never assume that the speaker of a poem is, indeed, the poet, according to Semansky, “Lawrence's work invites us to, as he has always woven autobiographical material into his writing.” Lawrence’s “Piano” may thus be considered to be the recounting of unwanted and involuntary emotional memory brought about as a response to music.
The Rocking-Horse Winner is a tragic story that demonstrates how materialism is very destructive in people’s lives. D.H. Lawrence uses one of the main characters, Hester, to symbolize how greed heavily affects the idea of materialism. Hester’s need for money develops the idea that happiness and love is destroyed by the need for money. Lawrence uses money in her short story to convey the idea of how neglect from a mother destroys an innocent, young child such as Paul. Lawrence’s symbolism reveals that children like Paul need love and compassion from their elders. Hester, Paul’s rocking horse and the whispering of the house represent greed, selfishness, and love. They also reveal the character’s real feelings and thoughts of neglect, detachment, greed and selfishness.
Writing about any artist or author makes us more curious about the writer and his or her view of life. I believe every writer reflects his or her own perspective in their writings even if they did not talk about themselves; this will appear to the reader in one way or another.
Lawrence’s short story, The Rocking-Horse Winner, is that greed causes many problems for anybody. For many years greed has been a major issue and if has changed the lives of many people. For instance, the king of England, King George III would tax the colonies more money so that they can have more wealth in his pocket. Well, eventually these colonists revolted causing the Revolutionary War, and not only did it create a new independent country, but many deaths as well. About 8,000 people died, plus an extra 25,000 more that were wounded because of one greedy person. Even in religion, there was a famous expression priests would say, “Greed is the root of all evil.” Thanks to the greed of the mother, there were financial circumstances that caused the father to try to gamble his way into some money so that he may financially support his family. One day Paul was wondering why they don’t have a car of their own, and that they have to use a taxi or borrow another relative’s vehicle. The mother states that his father is clearly not lucky enough, and Paul asks what luck was about. She says, “It’s what causes you to have money. If you’re luck you have money. That’s why it’s better to be born lucky that rich. If you’re rich, you may lose your money. But if you’re lucky, you will always get more money.” Eventually Paul gets her more money, only on her birthday, but she demands for more. Eventually all of the effort of Paul will cause him to break
