There are many differences between a traditional 4-year college and a 2-year community college. It has been shown that those who earn a high school degree or higher earn significantly more, so getting a college degree can greatly improve your quality of life. A 4-year school is the traditional option, and is highly respected by employers. However, college prices have risen greatly in recent years, making community college a more favorable choice. Community colleges provide cheaper secondary education, nearly free here in Oregon, and not having debt can be a great benefit, but they generally only provide 2-year degrees, which are less respected by employers. In addition to these two options, there are also trade schools, which are designed to
help get students into a specific job. However, I will probably not choose this option, as a trade school in my desired career would likely be much more expensive than a 4-year school.
Universities can be expensive, especially if the school is out of state or in current residency. Attending a community college to save money is a smart option for students.
although, there is a lot to agree with within the article there are some faulty statements that two year colleges don’t offer the best education possible and that community college are more engaging and individualized for a student and the price is also much less expensive than a university education.
For something seemingly so obvious, it is often left out of the conversation. Rick Perlstein wrote about the change in “student life” and how it is “no longer all that important”(Perlstein), and Liz Addison wrote mostly about culture and the available beginning. Both fail to give justice to the central idea of increasing your level of education. Due to this idea, I disagree with part of Addison’s argument. If the purpose is to increase education, then how can two years be better than four? Technically speaking, an associate degree from community college is half of what a bachelors degree would be from a four year university. While everything has a starting point, where it finishes if often what is most important. The value of a start in community college, in my opinion, is that you can eventually get into a four year school you could not previously have gone to. Students today are influenced and given the mindset by the adults around them that college is the only way to be successful in life. When someone is younger they look forward to the milestones in their life in which they hope to see. A couple of them will be the beginning High school and then College. Those two events are two different jumps most people will take in their life. At first the student may begin to become intimidated by the fact they will be entering college. When a students begins their high school career they will immediately begin to start looking forward to college, and the freedoms in which it brings. Once the student graduates and starts their college career they realize there are a lot of things in college that high schools have in common, as well as many differences in which they did not expect.
I have chosen to go to the local community college to get used to the college experience. College life can be an exciting time but at the same time it can be a challenge. I feel that starting out at the community college would be a better chose than "jumping" into life at a four-year university.
