1) What is the difference(s) between a chronological or functional resume?
According to the dictionary, chronological is “a record of events from the earliest and following as they occur.” In terms of a resume chronological begins at the most recent experience to the first one. This style of resume includes education, special skills, and employment. Generally a Chronological resume lists specific job titles and contains several bullet points that highlight achievements and skills related to the position (Chronological Resume vs. Functional Resume). I am a bit ahead of the curve on this since I have been recruiting to get into the financial industry and/or business school upon graduation. I decided to use the chronological resume versus the functional resume because it highlights all of my experience in clear and concise format. My skills and/or abilities are highlighted through the display of accomplishments in each role I have been in. Since I intend on changing industries based on the completion of my degree, I placed it at the top of the resume because it will be most relevant to industry I want to get into. I also emphasis my volunteer experience to demonstrate leadership, versatility, and well-roundedness. Lastly, there is an additional information section that helps differentiate me from the pack while displaying a valuable skill and/or knowledge. My resume displays that choosing just either the functional or chronological style is just the beginning. There is a lot more that goes into making a good resume. I have spent a lot of time working on this resume and ideally you are supposed to tweak your resume to each job description, but realistically this consumes so much time. Since I have refined my job search down to a specific role, I identified the important qualities a group of companies are looking for and then I demonstrated how I possess those qualities. When applying to the University of Darden’s Masters in Business Administration program I was told that during an interview you can use the “C.A.R.” method for explaining things. This helps organize thoughts in order to remain concise. C.A.R stands for context, action, and result. Give the background to an event; explain the action you took, and then the results that occurred due to your actions. Looking at my bullets you can see how I emphasize the actions and results component of that acronym due to the fact that explaining context would make bullets too lengthy. On this topic, results are essential because humans love proof. If you can quantify the results do so because it adds more value and evidence to your abilities. The content of your bullets are going to paint a picture in another person’s mind of you and therefore they must be concise to get keep their attention and demonstrate your value
