Community or the lack there of… It is sad to say that even myself as a citizen, lack certain characteristics helping to making progress in my community. Living in the city of Aurora I really have no sense of community, or even my surroundings at times. In my own neighborhood no one really says hi, or introduces themselves, nor does it seem that they care too. To be honest I don’t even know their names. It seems harder than ever before to even strike up a conversation with someone let alone to come to an understanding of what is really going on in our own backyards.
Aurora, like many Communities has city council meetings that all citizens can attend. I can guarantee that most of Auroras citizens could care less to attend, or even find out where these meetings are held, and what issues are covered that might directly affect them. First off boring right? Not enough time, who cares, how is my attendance and concern going to affect city officials to improving my life? That probably doesn’t even cross most peoples minds, especially if they have there own car, a place to sleep and property taxes stay about the same. Well I’m here to say not being involved in your community, or at the very least not knowing what is going on in your own backyard is detrimental to our progress in becoming more unified.
Why is this so important? Well for one how can we improve city funded programs that could be made more cost affective, that could bring us closer together, if we don’t even take the time to see what the city offers, or what they could offer if we were more involved in bringing certain programs needed to our community. What about law enforcement, and everything that it entails for our safety, and maybe how we could be exploited by our own ignorance in being prosecuted. What about public education and the possible loop holes in curriculum being over looked by board officials and parents. The need for new technology in our schools, more schools, class room size the whole nine yards. So we can give our children the education each and every one of them deserve. How and why certain monies get distributed in all facets in taxed payer spending. All of these things effect you and I and the mass populist of Auroranites who probably don’t even know enough too care.
The fourth chapter of City Politics by Dennis R. Judd & Todd Swanstrom covers the rise of "Reform Politics" with many local governments during the first half of the 1900s as a way to combat the entrenched political machines that took control of many large city governments in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over the course of the chapter, Judd & Swanstrom quickly cover the history of the "reform movement" with different examples of how the reform movement affected city politics in different areas.
City Hall needs to deflect criticisms and become more accountable. Image is not more important than action.
Civic engagement, overall, is on the decline according to Putnam (informal activities in particular, however, are ones that Americans, on average engage in more often). This decline applies to cities because of certain urban characteristics. The city, because of our division of labour, increases our tendency to drop out of community affairs because of busyness. Also, the city's neighbourhoods do not promote togetherness or a distinct "we" feeling because of a city's sheer population to the point that we actually come to view it as a city of strangers (too many to bother making friends with), unlike in the country where your next neighbour will likely be someone you will feel closer to because of time spent together and having no alternative option to socialize with many other people. Also, electronic entertainment (especially TV watching) gives us less incentive to socialize with our neighbours. In sum, these are just some ways his arguments apply to a city.
The issue of purchasing the Reformed Church of Palos Heights exemplified that the citizens are the ones who run the city. The citizens made their presence known in the City Council meetings as well as in the media. The Aldermen attempted to first bribe the Al Salam Mosque Foundation of Chicago with $200,000, and then to purchase the Reformed Church of Palos Heights. The Mayor sided with the people and vetoed the idea of paying $200,000 to the Al Salam Mosque Foundation of Chicago. In the end, the democratic policies on which our country was founded prevailed. The voices of the citizens were heard with a vote AGAINST: 2,856.
The founding fathers established the United States Constitution to maintain a strong government. In order for the United States government to flourish it is vital for the state and city to work in unison establishing policies that are beneficial for society. The United States maintains a political system, in which the nation derives its’ power from the state. In the book New York City Politics: Governing Gotham, Berg discusses the function of the state and federal government in relationship with the city. Although the City can organize their own government, they are dependent on the state and federal government.
... many parts of the city are breaking down, the school system and the children of the city are suffering more than anyone. There are school buildings that are falling down with leaking roofs. There are classrooms that are overcrowded because the district cannot afford to pay additional employees. Test scores of the students are suffering and many children are falling further and further behind the national standard. In order for the city to rise from the ruins it is in right now, it is necessary for someone to take responsibility for the issues within the schools and fix them. It is impossible to increase the population and tax income in the city when people are continuously moving away. It is time for Detroit to make their children feel safe and cared for at school, and time to make school an enjoyable place again so that the students can begin to thrive again.
...ite City should be put in consideration primarily. Very often people might see on the news that crime happens every day and violence and corruption are part of it. To promote a better society to future generations these serious issues should be taken into action adequately to minimize numerous deaths in the city of Chicago.
Hospice care can be provided in a variety of settings – in a hospital, in a facility devoted to
This focuses on the policy’s impact with particular attention to its intended and unintended consequences, political accountability, and whether policy knowledge is created. How this is put into play by society is that it helps policy by gathering input and serving the clients desires and goals. Another way this can also be looked at is by politicians dual where there is conflicting goals. How this benefits social capital and its uprising is the coming together of communities to share ideas and thoughts about their goals and desires. Given social capital can benefit individuals, it is perhaps no surprise that it also can help neighborhoods (322). So when more political debates are happening in society then neighbors and communities come together which then raises social capital.
Illinois and most notably Chicago are best known for their corrupt public officials. From the days of Cermak and the Daley political machine, corruption has become second nature to these “public servants”. From rigging elections to accepting ‘dirty’ donations to the alderman’s campaigns, corruption can be found from the very top of the political layer, down to the lowest government position. Those involved in the corruption have benefited greatly from their dirty deeds. Public residents aren’t directly aware of this corruption since they aren’t public officials, but most can attest to corruption when it involves the local police officers and the exploitation of the public.
1. Inform the Master and Engine room: This is obvious, but make sure you inform the Master, if he is not on bridge. Inform the engine room and stop the engine. The officer on watch should not hesitate to call the master even if he has the slightest doubt about any given situation. (The decision to stop the engine would depend on the severity of the accident and immediate action to be taken.)
In comparison to other communities, I love living in Cincinnati. It is a culturally diverse community in close proximity to suburbia or urban living. However, I would like to make a change to the intimate township I live in. From my perspective, the people have become stuck in a rut. Many students in my high school are generational, including myself, where my mom attended the same middle school and high school that I have attended. In addition, I have talked to many friends and family members and noted how people feel it is a great town, so they never choose to move or make any drastic changes. For many people, this is the perfect style of living, but I think it has caused our township to become stagnant. One solution I would present to
With so many vehicles on the roads today, automobile accidents have become an everyday occurrence. If you have been involved in a collision, it’s understandable that you’ll be upset and nervous after an accident, but it is important to remain as calm as possible and to record as many details as you can. Here is a list of some things that will need to be done both before you leave the accident scene and shortly afterwards.
The city manager that was appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder switch to Flint river from Detroit water system; Instead it resulted in plenty individuals breaking out in rashes, deaths, behavioral issues and the people of flint having to rely on aid water from celebrities, national guard and aid water because of the contaminated water. As the story unfolds the thoughts that came to my mind were why did it take it a year for those in charge to try to switch back to the Detroit water system. Why is money a big issue when many peoples ' lives are at stake? In both incidents were I had witnessed social inclusion being absent I believe recommendations such as those I listed below will assist with similar issues in the
The rise of Urban America began in the mid 1800’s with the dawn of the industrial revolution. With it came a rapid increase in the population of cities. This movement towards cities did not last forever, and after WWII, much of the population of cities moved to the suburbs. With the growth and decline of urban environments, and the growth of suburban environments, there has become a mixture of different types of local governments, some of which overlap the same geographical areas. Some view this hodgepodge as a problem, and have offered various solutions. To understand the different types of local governments and how they overlap, one must first understand the development of urban areas, and the movement from urban to suburban areas.
