I have determined that I really enjoy working on world politics, armed conflicts, international security issues and that the international affairs are more appealing to me than the business world. Being born in a Shiite family in a predominantly Sunni country, in an era when religious violence against minorities was on the rise, gave me unique perspective about geopolitical situation of Pakistan. Shia-Sunni conflict forced my family to migrate from one city to another in a country, which has faced tremendous amount of political, social and diplomatic challenges since its …show more content…

Being familiar with several different languages is most definitely not one of the easiest things to do. While growing up and experiencing different opportunities to learn different cultures there is no way it should be passed upon. Having the knowledge of different languages will offer one to have a lot more culture within there main culture and the one they are opening there self into. People with culture know their way around the world and the life they’re living. Also, it would permit one to travel to places all over the world and countries. Being knowledgeable about back rounds of several cultures will open a door for one with several opportunities throughout ones life time. Discovering different cultures will bring one around the world giving individuals chances to learn lifestyles in completely different ways. “Wild tongues can’t be tamed, they can only be cut out.” (Anzaldua) I enjoy this statement within writing my essay simply because it represents that she will continue to stay faithful to her language throughout her life.
...th and early 20th centuries entwined a power struggle between Great Britain and Russia, which only intensified after the discovery of oil in Iran in 1901. Following this discovery, western nations systematically exploited Iran for its natural resources, and fought to install sympathetic governments in the hopes of acquiring better oil deals, culminating in 1953 with the overthrow of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh by a combination of US and UK forces (Yergin). The continual fighting left Iran a political mess that was only rectified by Khomeini’s strong, Islamic government. Though he severely limited the power of the Iranian citizens, he increased the power of Iran within the Middle East, and world at large, as its strong military presence and large oil reserves empower the country to resist interference from countries that wish to take advantage of them.

I would like to become a member of the Presidential Leadership Academy (PLA) because I am determined to be a successful student at Elmhurst College. The program is focused on helping students, like me, who need academic support and guidance. In order to reach my best, I will need the friends, mentors, teachers, and advocates who I would be fortunate to meet in the Academy. The PLA will prepare me to be self-reflective as I continue to become a more thoughtful person. I consider myself a leader and an independent thinker, I am aware that I have much to learn about how to be a responsible, productive, and successful leader. The PLA would show me how to take the initiative when I have a good idea and yearn to put it into action. When I enter the workplace or join a club or organization, I want to have the leadership skills that help me, my peers, and society. I believe that becoming a member of the PLA at Elmhurst College will change the path of my life. I think that it would help me in ways I cannot even imag...
In today’s society, especially in the United States, most people are monolingual English speakers. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Multilingual speakers have an advantage in global affairs that involve countries that speak different languages. Speaking multiple languages makes it easier to communicate with people when involved in foreign affairs. Those who speak multiple languages are also more aware of other cultures in society. Monolingual speakers are not as exposed to other cultures and have difficulty understanding or even recognizing them. Furthermore, being multilingual increases your

Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
Iran, which was also formerly known as Persia, has an interesting history that affects the modern day culture of the region. Iran is known for one of the world’s oldest major civilizations which has roots dating back to 4000 BC. First, the Medes occupied the region; they unified Iran as a nation and major empire. Iran was ruled by a series of empires and dynasties, starting with The Achaemenid Empire which ruled from 550-330 bce all the way to Iran’s last dynasty, The Pahlavi Dynasty, which was in power from 1925-1941 ce. The Iranian Revolution or the Islamic Revolution put an end to the dynasties in Iran after the shahs (kings) started incorporating Western ideals and philosophies into society. This brought sharp objections from religious people and they started viewing the Shahs as anti-Islamic which eventually lead to the Ayatollah regaining power over the nation. In order to have a basic understanding of the issues facing Iran today it is important to look at the past and have an understanding of the modern history of this complex nation.

Therefore, this is able to encourage the ability to communicate and appreciate the depth and diversity of the world. Communication with two different countries, or three, or four, will further bring the world closer together, in hopes of closing the divide between some countries. By learning a second language, it can significantly broaden your native language as it gives you stronger vocabulary skills, improved literacy skills and a better understanding of the grammar and construction of your own native language. Furthermore, this can help you in other educational studies. Though it is possible to travel to another country without acquiring the native language, the experience you will have is greatly diminished as you will not see beyond the surface of their culture. Additionally, knowing the native language makes travelling easier, by being able to order meals in restaurants, ask and understand directions. Additionally, it makes it easier to find accommodation, it’s more enjoyable, informative and more satisfying. You are able to further understand and appreciate international literature, music and films, by being able to understand word plays, innuendoes, cultural references, metaphors and further improve your ability to speak the
