On Wednesday, March 15, 2017, I attended the monthly meeting of Community Board 1 in Staten Island, New York. Community Board #1 governs a number of neighborhoods on the North Shore of Staten Island and consist of several committees. The purpose of the Community Board meeting, was to discuss ongoing processes, progresses and new developments in the surrounding neighborhoods that are governed by Community Board 1. Several members were in attendance to represent their Area\Ad Hoc\Functional committees. However, a rep from the land use committee stated that rebuilding the center at the same location may not be the best choice. The problem discussed is that rebuilding of the recreational centers over the waterfront is very difficult. They went on to say that since the center’s enactment, it had been faced with many obstacles. One obstacle is that the site on which the center was built is unstable and is extremely vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. Members went on to discuss the expensive maintenance that was needed in the past to keep the original center up and running. An alternative site was proposed to build a new recreational center, but such suggestion was not readily accepted as the former center was so centrally located and easily accessible to public transportation. The cost of rebuilding and maintaining the center was also …show more content…
To demonstrate the primary goal of public health nursing, and to promote civic engagement, the public health nurse should partner with Community Board #1 to promote programs and services to address the health and wellbeing of the members of the surrounding communities. By partnering with the community board, the nurse can get a better understanding of some of the social issues that may be contributing to the negative health status of the members of the community. The nurse is also in a position to learn about the activities in which all area committees are engaged in their efforts to address the physical and social issues that are present in the community. Through working with the community board, the nurse is in a position to scan the community environment and alert area hospitals and health systems of any new or emerging health related
...mendation. ‘It's about time,’ Fine said. ‘If you destroy the landmark, you should be punished for it" (Dardick and Mendel). Many historic features were obliterated during the renovation. Only the exterior walls and a small seating portion at the south end of the field are historic remainders. Many new and modern extensions were added to the field.
Self- care abilities of individuals and communities are important to promote mental and physical health and to reduce mortality and morbidity that occur from accidental injuries and chronic conditions (Dillion, 1997). Lifestyle changes have an effect on health prevention and delay of diseases and health problems. Dillion states if nurses use strategies from community nursing and objects from Healthy People 2000 they can identify threats to health promote and maintain health. Dillion states a key strategy is a health fair (Dillion,
During one of my undergraduate courses, “Community and Population Health”, I completed a paper on my community and access to healthcare. During the research and community outreach performed to meet the goals of the paper, my eyes were opened to the plight of small communities in regards to access to quality healthcare. This plight has become my passion, and has formed the basis for my vision of the Family Nurse Practitioner role.
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. Although I

The educator role of the APHN and NP includes health education within a nursing framework and professional nurse educator roles. The APHN analyzes groups at risk within a community and implements health education interventions. The APHN and NP boost wellness and contribute to conserving and advocating health by teaching the importance of a healthy lifestyle, stress management, physical exercise, and good nutrition. They educate about disease processes and the importance of following treatment systems. In addition, they provide guidance and educate clients on the use of birth control methods, diet, medications, and other therapeutic procedures. They also counsel groups, families, clients, and the community on the importance of assuming responsibility for their own
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
Also, changing their perceptions about their health and to overcome the issues that restrict them from having a healthy lifestyle. (Lapkin & Doab 2015) Moreover, nurses can prevent illness in the community to worsen and assist them to manage their health. (Lapkin & Doab
According to Allender, Rector, and Warner (2014), public health is a combination of both an art and a science (2014). The mission of public health nursing is to promote health, prevent disease and ultimately prolong life (Allender et al., 2014). In order for this to occur an assessment must take place. An aggregate or community assessment begins with a collection of data. This includes: the community’s health needs, risks, environmental conditions, financial resources through local census data, and a windshield survey (Allender et al., 2014). Through public health nursing, communities can collectively come together to help promote an overall better health standing.
A waterfront area located in Philadelphia, known as Penn’s Landing, has become a central area of redevelopment over many decades. What used to be trees and shrubs has transformed into an area of hotels, museums, restaurants, casinos, stadiums, and much more. This 35-acre site has so much to offer and has become an important area of public space for anyone to visit and enjoy. Penn’s Landing is a public space that benefits the public by containing a mixture of residential life, entertainment, and retail that is supported by a long history of creation and redevelopment.
This can be done by providing free blood pressure and blood glucose level checks. Another way to create awareness is providing health drives with it community as well as subsidized/ waived fees for the screening of heart diseases and stroke. Public health nurses could help educate and create awareness by having health promotions setup. Community nurses could also provide oriented health services that are available for the community which might include providing essential personal services for those who would otherwise not receive them, and making sure that a competent public health and personal health care workforce is available (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2014
A community can be defined as a group of people, who live, learn, work and play in an environment at a given time. (Yiu, 2012, p.213) There are many factors that may influence the community’s development and health status. These can include resources available, accessibility, transportation, safety, community needs etc… These influences may combine together to form community strengths and as well as community challenges or weaknesses. As a community health care nurse, it is significant for us to assess and identify these strengths and challenges within the community in order for us to intervene and provide the appropriate needed health care services for the community members. This individual scholarly paper will explore and focus on one challenge issue identified from our group community assessment.
