When one begins to delve into the art of communication, it can be seen that communication is purely the act of transferring information from one source to another whether it be verbally, non-verbally, written or visually (Unknown, What is Communication?, 2011-2014). As infants we are taught by our parents to communicate yet, would never imagine there being such a complexity attached to it. The following essay focuses on two communication skills, one being third person and one being a second person communication skills and are; Listening and rapport building and problem solving. The theoretical use and effectiveness of these two skills are used in a paramedic setting where a patient is complaining of feeling ill after spending the night out drinking alcohol. The essay concludes with a reflective component where a reflection on my demonstration of these two skills within the video is written and identify the future goals for the positive development of my communication skills.
The ability to encourage others to communicate with you and have trust in you is called “rapport” and establishing it with someone is the first step in being an effective communicator. When rapport is built, it allows both people to be able to communicate freely with trust and when working in the health field, this is very important as you are required to ask very personal questions in order to gain significant information that will help them become better. The word is often used to mean good interaction between people in different positions or roles (Unknown, Rapport, 2014) and can be used as an indicator of the quality of the relationship you have with the other person. This quote successfully outlines the true significance of listening to someone properly and when doing this, rapport is built. When someone feels that you are truly giving them your attention, they will continue to open up to you with information as they feel you are interested in what they are saying. However, if you are demonstrating poor body language and appear bored to them, they will stop talking to you and possibly feel insulted. Throughout my video, it is apparent that I am sustaining a good conversation with the patient through the use of effective listening by maintaining lot of eye contact and open body language and asking questions based our conversation, so he was aware that I was really listening.
