The client being observed is a sophomore at UNH named Mike. Since attending UNH, Mike has displayed symptoms of social phobia. These symptoms include feeling nervous being around large groups of people and having panic attack like episodes. As well as this, he also often confines himself to his room, rarely speaks in class, and does not have very many friends. Though this is the case in college, Mike has not always displayed these symptoms. He suffered a lot of ridicule as a child because of a rare hormonal disorder. This ridicule that he faced adversely affects his current condition. However in high school, this ridicule stopped, and he was able to make close friends and found what he loved to do. Though Mike is nervous about attending therapy, he feels that something needs to be done in order for him to change.
Children who suffer from ASD usually have the appearance of normal development and then become withdrawn and regress from social interaction (Melinda Smith, 2013). The impaired social interaction of the disorder affects communication both verbally and non- verbally (Melinda Smith, 2013). During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Communication is an interesting field of study because we learn so much about it in our everyday lives. While in class we took the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension created by Jim McCroskey in the 1970’s. Communication apprehension consists of four parts: group, meeting, dyadic, and public apprehension. Each part relates to how well one does when in a social situation and how comfortable one may be during certain scenarios of social interaction. Through testing one can see how comfortable they feel in different settings.

As a young child I was a non social person, and did not like to participate in anything. I liked to be an individual person, and do things on my own. I was shy and not outgoing like all my other friends were. When I enter a situation for the first time, I have a hard time speaking up until I feel comfortable. As being as shy as I was, my school work was affected a lot because I would not raise my hand to ask questions if I did not understand something, or go to the teacher for help. It was hard to transition from that stage to being more outgoing and talk more with my peers. It was difficult to communicate with others becuase of this as well, i was not able to be the perosn that i really am.
