Recommended: Factors that affect public speaking anxiety
Before taking the Communication 101 course I never really felt confident in my public speaking skills. When I was younger I was a very shy kid, I never really spoke my opinion in classes and never wanted to raise my hand to answer a question. As a result, I was that kid who was deadly afraid to get called on so he would try to hide in the back of the class and just blend in. As I grew older, I started to grow out of the being afraid habit, and realized I’m just going to have to speak publicly. So I tried my best to set my nerves aside, and started to raise my hand in class or even volunteer to present first. I just wanted to see if I started to participate more that I would eventually get comfortable with speaking publicly. Now that I’m in …show more content…
When it comes to giving a speech, I really like to be able to know my topic and have as much time as possible to practice my speech. This allows me to feel comfortable and helps me minimize the chances of messing up, or forgetting something. So this assignment was a new concept to me, and I was worried that my speech wouldn’t be done as well as I’d like. However, there was a couple of things I can do to help prepare for the speech. Such as, looking over the example impromptu, practicing giving myself topics to make outlines on, and even having a mock impromptu with my suitemates. Once I started to do stuff like this, I realized it wasn’t going to be that bad, and my nerves started to settle. I grew a little more confident and felt like my impromptu was going to go well, and in my opinion it …show more content…
These goals are; my vocal clarity and maintain a good pace while speaking. Sometimes during my speech’s, the adrenaline kicks in and I start talking way to fast and its hard for people to understand me. That didn’t happen during my impromptu because that’s been something I’ve been wanting to work on. So even though it didn’t happen, I want to make sure it stays that way. On the other hand, sometimes my nerves get the best of me and I stumble on some words, which effects my vocal clarity. My hope is that throughout this course I’ll get more comfortable with speaking, and I wont have as many stumbles. Those are my two main goals, but throughout the course I want to improve on gestures, movement, and being more
Having never done this before, I really didn?t know how long my speech should last
Multiple essays have been formulated during the duration of Composition 1. These essays have taught me an important lesson about my writing, failure is acceptable in order to grow. On the other hand, I made an important discovery last year that I want to study journalism and advance further in that field after college. From taking journalism classes, to blogging in my spare time, to always getting an A on my papers, I thought I had no room to improve. I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
The purpose of the ice breaker speech was to tell the class about a specific thing regarding who we are. I took approximately three days attempting to choose a topic, and went back and fourth between my name and first tattoo. When I went through the first tattoo speech it seemed a bit long and I didn’t want to make it too personal, although I thought it’d be interesting. I made an outline for both topics and went over in my mind, each speech and how I’d say them. I even asked opinions and only a few thought the tattoo story would suffice, although they found it interested. Both outlines had a bit of humor, a bit of something special about me, and what I think is rare factor. I only worked on a couple outlines of each. Eventually I chose the topic of my name a couple of days before the assignment and tweaked what I thought was best every time I reviewed it. I thought my name would be best because in a way the speech would still explain something about who I am, a little humor and a rare factor. I practiced in front of my roommate and in the car on the way to school and work, I recor...
For the aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt that fears and shy had been controlled myself throughout the years. According to The People’s Almanac presents The Book of Lists by David Wallechinsky, Irving and Amy Wallace, one of the topic was titled “The 14 Worst Human Fears”, and the fear of speaking in public is the first fear of all fears (Richard I. Garber, 2009). This make me realized that it is perfectly normal to feel anxiety and fears to speak. Everyone, even an experienced speakers has some anxiety when speaking in front of a group of people. As for my experience and situation, I should have just fight the fears in me to throw my voice out asking questions in class otherwise I would might left behind a bit and need to struggle up for the subjects more than everyone does. Asking questions does not make you any stupid, it’s the source of
I was born into a family of which literature and writing was not only encourage but often times during my life it was something I had to do. Which, when given the question how this course fits into not only my life but my educational life ends with a large number of answers. Primarily it will not only be important to me following the educational path I want but to be a support for my mother who often times has a hard time comprehending what she reads. Additionally English 103 is important to help me move forward with my goals for education in getting a degree in English and proceed to go into book editing. As seen English 103 goes beyond just a simple credit for me and is much more than just, ‘a class’.
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. I just wanted to do my best in this class and just breeze through this class and get it over with. Getting up in front of the class for my first speech, was petrifying for me
Communication is the key to partnership and humanity as a whole. As I work in a kindergarten through eigth grade school I come into contact with a lot pf people. I find communicating faily easy. As I had conversations with all personnel listed in the assignment I have realized that I enjoy talking with others.
For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress. I’ve always admired those who seem to be able to just flow through their speeches without as much as a hint of nerves. The reason I decided to write my paper on this specific topic was to learn about different tips that people have for public speaking.
When talking about communication and the self, one might ask: what does the self have to do with communication? The answer is everything. In order to communicate correctly with others, one must know who they are. Once we know who we are, it will then reflect on how one communicates with others (Chapter 3). One important aspect of the self is knowing who you are, or self-concept. Self-concept is the set of perceptions we hold of ourselves. This isn’t just about physical aspects of one’s self, but also one’s talents, likes, dislikes, and values. There are multiple characteristics to the self-concept. First off, the self-concept is subjective; meaning it is based on personal feelings and opinions. The second characteristic is that self-concept
...unication is most interesting and motivating course I have taken this semester.. I found that contacting professor for help in difficulties you face would really be beneficial the way you look things. I learnt to effectively communicate with professors and team members in a more professional member After 4 months through organized coursework, assignments, projects and teamwork I have a clearer vision of how business communication strategies work and really applied few of them in situations of my student life. However, the Business Communication text book was useless as I have never used it. I would like to say a big word of thank you to Diana, and all the fellow classmates of Business Communications X204
I did have great communication skills but whenever I had to communicate in front of a group of people for some reasons I fail miserably. My public speaking fears had become worst when I got to college. I was required to take a public speaking class which I couldn’t escape in since it was one of the required courses for my degree. My first day on that class is so far the most terrible day of my life. I was asked to introduce myself to the class using only one word to describe me, the moment that my name was called it felt like I was walking into an unfamiliar galaxy. I am standing in front of a classroom full of strangers doing nothing but looking around and
Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
