The authors of the four stories have themes in common. One theme they all have in common is love. Would the authors be able to sit down in a room and have a talk? There are common themes, but some are deeper than others.
One of the common theme in “Daddy” is love. Love can go a far way and even suicide. One of the quotes about love in “Daddy” is “And a love of the rack and screw. And I said I do, I do.” She married someone who looks like her dad and her dad was a Nazi as she describes him in short words. Another quote that symbolizes love is when she says “I was ten when they buried you. At twenty, I tried to die And get back, back, back to you.” What she means is that her father was buried so she tried to kill herself so she could go with her father.

One of the quotes about love in “The Standing Ironing” is “Aren’t you ever going to finish ironing mother?” That is love because the narrator cares about his mom knowing that she works a lot and she still has to come home and iron clothes. The mother in Tillie Olsen’s story, “I Stand Here Ironing” gives insight into the upbringing of her first child. We see she is guilty of neglect towards Emily and is distressed due to poor decisions that she had made rearing her daughter. The mother reflects on the past and thinks that her actions and “lack of” might have affected Emily. She is so engulfed in “what ifs” and “how could I’s” that she is practically beating herself mentally. Poor Emily received little attention when attention was needed, allowing us to condemn the mother for her actions. Every human has his or her own definition of love because people usually define love based on their cultures, backgrounds, social classes, educations, and their societies. In this essay, the main point will be the different kinds of love that Carver illustrates in his story “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.” In Carver’s story, there are some points that I can relate to my personal experience. Each form represents the time period of my life I am representing. “Daddy’s Girl” was inspired by “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke. The two share the perspective of a young child desiring a close relationship with their fathers, due to their lack of involvement. “Daddy’s Girl,” is structured in three stanzas, each representing a different part of the scenario. The first stanza offers my desire to spend time with my dad. The parenthetical statement that “(I don’t actually like baseball)” (l. 2) shows that the activity I desired had nothing to do with the activity and everything to do with him. The second stanza is more in line with the time spent at the ballpark. My father always worked, but I didn’t mind as long as I got to be with him. My comment that, “Mr. Heller seems nice” (l. 8) relayed a desire to converse with my father about things he was interested in. I didn’t have the mental capacity to talk about the actual work, so the business partners involved would have to suffice.
