Sports injuries are a very common occurrence. This research paper will highlight some of the most common injuries that an athlete may receive while performing in the sport. There are many ways to treat sports injuries if an athlete receives one. If people are aware of how to warm up, and use proper technique: then athletes would not have to worry about injuries because there are many ways to prevent them from happening. In the sport of football there are many types of injuries. One of the most common injuries occurs to the knee. These types of injuries occur when the player is bearing weight on one side of the knee, then gets tackled at a certain angle to cause damage to the ligaments (Football Injuries, n.d.). Ligament sprains are the most commonly reported injuries. They account for more than 30 percent of all injuries, with the lateral ligaments of the ankle and medial collateral ligaments of the knee most commonly affected (EyeOnNFL, n.d.). Even though these are common injuries in football, they certainly are not the only injuries a player needs to worry about. Another common type of injury in football is a concussion. Football is one of the most dangerous games. As the years go on, more and more rules are being written to prevent the danger, but danger is the nature of the game. Studies have shown that high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college football players and high school athletes in other sports. Also, they show that 47% of high school football players say they suffer a concussion each season. As a result about 250,000 people under the age of 19 went to the emergency room with concussions in 2009, compared with 150,000 in 2001.

A concussion is a head injury that can have damaging effects on athletes of all sports and ages. Concussions are regularly caused by a hard hit to the head or body that causes the brain to shake inside the skull. While there is fluid within the skull to protect the brain, when an athlete is hit hard enough, the brain moves to the point of hitting the skull, causing a head injury otherwise known as a concussion (“Concussions”). Terry Adirim, a medical doctor who writes articles for Clinical Pediatrician Emergency Magazine, says that an individual may have many different symptoms after receiving a concussion. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of consciousness, and vomiting, but each of these symptoms do not necessarily happen with every concussion.

Lifting more than you need to will only make your body worse. Using poor form can get you hurt quicker and easier than any other way. Make sure that you are using the correct form even if that means hiring a trainer or having a spotter. Workouts that you know can help because you will know the correct position. Trainers and doctors in the medical field diagnose these brain injuries by loss of consciousness, slurred speech, loss of balance, and loss of memory.
