I have an extremely meaningful, vital ticket that is full of redemption, recreation, and relief, but it is not for me. I will simply go home to my hard-working, high-spirited mother to send her off on her well deserved dream trip to the Caribbean islands. When I get home to her, she will be filled with over exaggerated tears along with her usual humble denies of gifts. We will argue for a few minutes only for her to finally take the ticket from my hand as my gratitude for everything she has already put up with, given me, and taught me in my short seventeen years of life. President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the United States Congress following the unexpected attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor the previous day. As a result, Roosevelt asked the Congress to declare war on Japan. Throughout the course of history, there have been many civil wars. In those civil wars, many persons fought and died in battles to defend their beliefs. In the aftermath of a major battle, a people’s morale is as shattered and broken as the bodies of those that were slain. Following the battle, a funeral is conducted in remembrance of the deceased. At these funerals a funeral oration is usually given by a well-known domestic public figure, such as when Abraham Lincoln gave his “Gettysburg Address” in 1863 AD and when Pericles gave his funeral oration to Athens in 431 BC. These speeches were made not only to put to rest the souls of the dead and the grief of those who knew them, but to give those people hope that their friends and loved ones did not die in vain and to remind them why their civil war was being fought.
My dad showed me this speech when I was young and it is what made me get into baseball. This speech inspired my whole childhood. Lou's words made me want what he had. This is why I played some many years and put a lot of my life into playing baseball. I know others have been in the same spot I have. Everyone who plays baseball looks to get to what Lou described in his speech. Everyone wants their rival team to send them a parting gift because they have so much respect for you. Every night, as I sat on the table with my younger brothers assisting them with their homework, I hear a familiar sound at the door. As she walks her heels click, and I can hear her searching her bag for her keys, the next thing I know the keys are in the lock and as it turns me and my younger brothers’ jump. We run to the door and indeed we scream in unison “Mommy’s home”, one by one she gives us a hug and a kiss. My mother asks us how our day was, and if we finished our homework, she then looks to me and said “did you cook and assist your younger ones with their homework”; I replied “yes mom”. As I warm the food, I take my mother’s purse, jacket, and shoes put them away and prepare the table for her to eat dinner. As I glance at the clock, with bright red lights glaring at me I notice the time, it is 7:30 p.m. As a young child I never questioned my mom, about her daily program but it was understood to me that my mother worked very hard to raise three children on her own. My mother migrated from Nigeria at the age of 18, with a scholarship to study at the New York City College of Technology; she received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree. She created a path way of success for her younger siblings; the first to go to college, the first to come to America with a scholarship offer. My mother works at the Nigerian Embassy, she also has a certificate in Cisco Systems, she has her license in nursing and is a licensed realtor, there were no bearings on where my mother education stopped, soon after her siblings from Nigeria followed in pursuit of furthering their education and continuing the path of success. She’s one of those old souls stuck in the fifty’s and refuses to see the 21st century. She is a good mother, it 's only when it came to me she lacked. I met my mother when I was four. She adopted my little sis and me. Through my younger age I hated her I absolutely hated her and she failed to understand why or explain to me so I could understand whom the lady was that I was staying with. Where my real mother was. She failed to help me see what was going on and with me only being four I thought she kidnapped me and I hated her. My mother, Kari Jenson, is one of the most important people in my life. She gave birth to me, helped me learn to walk and so many other things that I find amazing. Valedictorian Speech Good evening fellow graduates, teachers, family members, friends, and distinguished guests. It is a tremendous honor to be the valedictorian of our graduating class. My job is to somehow be the voice of the entire graduating class, and take five minutes to say a few words on behalf of all 539 of us. Like most valedictorians, writing this speech was not an easy task for me. Not because I did not have anything to say, but because I was overwhelmed by how much I wanted to share with you all on this day. Tonight, we have one common purpose, to celebrate. We are here to congratulate, to look towards what the future holds for us, to wish each other well, and to, most importantly look back on our time spent here. So, I would like to start by saying 'well done' to my fellow graduates, who have all worked hard during the past several years to reach this milestone. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the graduating class for selecting me to speak here tonight. Ever since the news broke, many people, some who've I've never really met before, have come up to me and have wished me well. Perhaps this speech would be incomplete if I don’t say something to the teachers. On the behalf of my entire class, I would like to thank all my teachers: thank you. Thank you for teaching us, for leading us, for building us up as adults. I know that we have not given back to you the respect you deserve. I know that we have not told you how much we appreciate you taking time out of your schedules to help us. And I know that we have not said thank you for giving us a wonderful education. So, I hope that as I say thanks, you can forget our shortcomings and remember us for who we are and not from the mistakes we have made. ...
