What was the moment in your life that introduced you to adulthood? Coming of age is this moment in your life where you transition into adulthood and your perception of life changes. Many components of coming of age can be expressed through experiencing loss and finding your identity. In Catcher and the Rye by J.D Salinger the main character, Holden experiences loss in many ways, including losing his brother, his innocence, and his childhood. All affect the way that he views life and his transition into adulthood. Another example is in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, when one of the main characters, Juliet, finds her identity and discovers what she wants for herself. That he doesn’t have to leave anything behind when he gets older. Holden states, “I thought about all of this stuff I just finished telling you about. I didn’t know what the hell to say. If you want to know the truth, I don’t know what to think about it. I am sorry I told so many people about it. All I know is, I sort of miss everybody I told about.” (Salinger 276-277) This quote strongly shows how he is accepting loss and he is coming to the realization that he is still young. He doesn’t have to be this big, mature, grown-up man who understands everything and knows exactly what to do. He doesn’t have to lose his childhood just because the people around him are changing and maturing. Even though some of the people throughout his story were phonies and idiots to him, he still misses them. He learns to change his perspective of life, and that just because something ends badly doesn’t mean that everything is going to be terrible.
