What does it mean to come of age? It means the transition from being a child into an adult. It is when you start to let go of your childhood and are becoming more aware of the world around them. That in-between time where you are conflicted with the ever intimidating presence of adulthood and the comfort of familiarity of childlike tendencies and carefree mentalities. Everyone at some point in their life will go through this and some wish their lives away to become an adult and receive all the benefits of becoming an adult. I want to give some advice to all the kids out there and the people who are in the beginnings of adulthood: enjoy your youth now while you still have it. I have been working since I was a senior in high school and had a regular teenage job working at our local Mexican restaurant. I worked for them for 2 and a half years and knew that I wanted to do something different and better for my life. I was in a vocational school my senior year and finished my class after my graduation in 2014. My head was teaming with the thoughts of starting my own company and being my own boss. I wanted to take the business world by storm! About that time my dad had been laid off from his job and his whole career field seemed to have disappeared as well. It was left up to my mom, sister, and me to make money and pay for all of our bills. Now it sounds as if that is quite a bit of money coming in, but if you take a hostess, nanny, and a fast food workers paychecks into account, that’s not a lot of money. I was so stressed beyond belief and couldn’t quite catch my breath from the waves of bills and responsibilities that came crashing over me. My hopes of going to college and getting into business school all became a pipe dream. I ended up getting a second job at the State Highway Department in Muskogee and couldn’t have been happier! I was working 8 hours a day and getting paid quite nicely for just a 19 year old! As we grow up, we develop as people, and learn things from others around us. In these selections from East Asia, there’s different elements of growing up. From these stories and poems from Korea, China, and Japan, there is experience coming of age in more than one way. There are instances of young love, war, passing friendship, and overall life in these foreign places. Through these instances there is growing up and coming of age in places never experienced. “Dead Poet’s Society” is a film set in the late fifties at a prestigious school for boys called the Welton Academy. The story focuses on an unorthodox English teacher and his impact upon his students, especially a group of seven boys. The primary focus of this film, in my opinion, is the theme of coming of age. The film itself highlights many important and relevent issues that teenagers face in the process of trying to find out who they are as a person. The students are constantly pressured to conform by adults throughout most of the film. Although these adults are only trying to help the boys, it is important that they figure themselves out and develop their own way of thinking. When the boys realize this, they grow up themselves. The character of Todd is a fantastic example of this. Throughout most of the film, this shy boy is ultimately unwilling and reluctant to go against what he is told. When Neil commits suicide, he begins to see the world in a very different way and understands that sometimes questioning the decisions and regulations accepted by society is necessary.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between racial identity development of African American adolescents and the role of education. For me to “come of age” means to grow up, to become wiser, and to become more responsible. Responsibility, privileges, and consequences are all a part of coming of age. When you get the privileges you need to be responsible with them and if you're not you will get consequences for that. Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.
As individuals age they will come to a point in their lives where they are considered to be in middle adulthood. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016), middle adulthood is the range from 30-60 which involves physical and health changes (p. 477). Some individuals may take this time to reflect on their lives and be happy will all of the things they have done and look forward to what is still to come and there may be others who feel that should have changed things or even may experience a “midlife” crisis. AllPsychologyCareers website (2016) states, “Midlife crisis is a time of great emotional upheaval, anxiety, and drastic changes in behavior (para. 13). Middle adulthood can be a time of contentment or even regret.
Every experience we go through will, in some way or another, help each of us to develop understanding. Coming of age is a life-long journey, but there are major events or experiences you can go through that will play an important part in become an adult. As time goes by, we will all experience trials, blessings, heartache, joy, and love; each of these periods in our lives will have an extraordinary impact upon who we become. These escapades, will enable us to come of age. The importance of coming of age develops from the experiences that create memories, teach life skills, and inspire character.
Everyone that have ever lived to adulthood, understand that difficulty of the transition to it from childhood. As of right now, I am in the prime of the “coming of age “transition. The overwhelming pressure of our society that forces the adolescence to assimilate the social norms is felt by many. Just as in our first steps, our first words or anything that is expected in our human milestones, coming of age is one of them. It may variety from different societies, religious responsibility or modern legal convention; everyone had to reach this point eventually.
Transition from childhood to adulthood is not just age related. It is a shift in the way our mind starts to process things.

That summer after school I just wanted to find a job and start making some money. Going to college for anther four year was something I thought I could not handle. I final got a job at UPS unloading trucks. At first I thought how hard could it be? But every day I would come home exhausted from working in the heat. And then when I got tiny pay check, it hit me. From then on I decided that manual labor was something that I could not do the rest of my life and I could definitely not support a family on that income. A job behind a desk in the air conditioning was what I wanted.
Maturity is a quality that is admirable for anyone, at any age to have. Perhaps that is because it has to be learned over time and is not something that one naturally has as a character trait. When I think of maturity, I usually think of adults who know how to conduct themselves. Adults are a symbol of maturity-- this goes back to the etymology of the word- which stems from the Latin word maturitas, maturitatis, f. In Latin, the word means ripeness, which would make sense because adults are fully developed. Although the literal meaning of maturity is within the realm of being fully developed, there is a more precise definition that would apply to the psychological and mental practice of what is maturity.
