Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries comedy has evolved from what it use to be. Especially now in the 21st century where we live in a modern society. We want everything in our lives to be modern, from our homes to our entertainment. Where comedy comes in. People love it because it takes something that is serious and bends it a joke. It makes fun of the ills in life, and distracts people from the sorrow and dangers of this world. It’s an escape than has the ability to reach us on a personal level, in our homes, whether it’s on the television or computer screen.
Comedy began as a way to be distracted from the misfortunes and poverty of times. There is still a degree of escapism in which we enjoy comedy today. Such as letting viewers experience the ability of free speech. There are many shows and channels on television devoted to comedy and countless webpages and videos online of comedy. All forms comedy too, from kid shows with sensitive humor to websites such as college humor. Stand-up shows and specials are normally on a pay-per-view basis but most of them become available on the Internet not long after airing. They can be shared over Facebook and twitter, as well as other social networks instantly.
One of the most popular forms of modern comedy is the mocking of public authority figures. One of the largest supporters of this on television is Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. The show has been airing since 1996 on the cable channel Comedy Central. The channel where almost everyone goes to for their modern comedy needs. The host Jon Stewart takes the most pressing and/or entertaining news and puts a spin on it, as well as mocking most other news stations and authority figure. So if more people are taking away correct information from the show, should it really be considered a “fake” news show? The show is simply more appealing than others such as Fox news or MSNBC because of its comedic standpoint. People don’t want to come home from work or wake up in the morning and watch the depressing stories of the world. Life is hard and people want comedy to make themselves feel better. That where the daily show comes in. it takes news stories both foreign and domestic and puts a comedic spin so it isn’t depressing and more people will be attracted to it. Also if a news story is turned into a joke, some people may just go and look it up to see if it is true or not. So the begin looking up information because the show, making them more informed. As Zinser said, “An informed public is the grease that keeps democracy running smoothly.”
