It has been said that, “Our technological powers increase, but the side effects and potential hazards also escalate.” Technology can be identified as the application of acquired knowledge for technical and practical means. Based on the discharge of the fifth atomic bomb, contrived by the United States, on August 6th, to hinder the perpetuation of the World War, the atomic bomb generated lethal radioactiveness. Thus the bomb caused a major portion of the Japanese population to perish, and as well the immediate release of the bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan caused the annihilation of the city at a certain mile radius. In the text, “There Will Come Soft Rains” written by Ray Bradbury, an American science fiction, horror, mystery fiction, …show more content…
and as well as fantasy author, the story outlines the obliteration of humanity after the release of a nuclear force in a city, in the precocious and innovative future in the year of 2026, where humanity and their forged remnants had been eradicated. In my opinion, technology has generated a detrimental effect towards society because it had eradicated the population, and had as well extinguished the remnants in society. It can be said that the implementation of technological, military weapons within society had been adverse to the civilization since it had caused the numerous deaths of individuals within its generation. For instance, according to the text, “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury, the text mentions, “The five spots of paint—the man, the woman, the children, the ball—remained. The rest was a thin charcoaled layer,”(Bradbury 12). In other words, the absence of humanity means that the people who were residents of the city had perished, only the remains of burnt charcoal had been left in the remnants of the city, caused by the decimation of the nuclear force released in the city, and the radioactiveness that the city emitted. Consequently, this demonstrates how modernized mechanizations were deleterious to the community since the development of military weaponry, including nuclear and atomic bombs caused the eradication humanity, individuals had perished, and the impact of the bomb had caused their bodies to burn immediately, declining in the population. Furthermore, according to the text Bradbury outlines, “The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles,”(Bradbury 10). This signifies how the atomic and nuclear weaponry within the city, had eradicated the constructions located in the city, until the remains of the city where debris and wreckage, the release of the nuclear bomb emits a radioactive and lethal glow, due to the radioactivity. This demonstrates how the innovative weapons, designed by humans is disadvantageous to the people since the bombs caused a catastrophic demolition in the city, the nuclear bombs caused radioactiveness that is certainly lethal to humans, and the population was as well annihilated, in the elimination of their city and the absence of residences. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of scientific knowledge within society is adverse and inimical, since the release of the nuclear and atomic bombs caused the complete destruction of dwellings, and as well the mass death of humans within the population, thus leaving the absence of their presence and the forged city. Conversely, others may regard the implementation of innovative knowledge within a community as advantageous to the human race.
According to the article, “Technology and Society-Impact of Technology on Society, “Technologies[..]are being used in classrooms to boost students morale to learn. Visual education is becoming more popular and it has proved to be the best method of learning in many subjects[..]The business community has invested money in various educational technologies which can be used by both teachers and their students.” In other words, this signifies that the use of technology within the educational system enables students to learn the knowledgeable concepts, and as well provides visual education that is a beneficial instructional method of learning among students. This demonstrates how the utilization of technology in society is productive since the technological devices allow the students to acquire a comprehension, by visual education enabling students to apply the presented concepts visually, as the learning method has improved, it is functional, and advantageous to the student's learning process. Based on the article, “Technology and Society-Impact of Technology on Society,” the article outlines, “Transportation provides mobility for people and goods. [..]Technology has helped in advancing [..](1) road transport used by automobiles ,(2) air transport which is used by airplanes, (3)water transportation which is used by ships and speed boats and (4) space transportation used to go to the moon.[..] Technologies like automobiles, buses and trucks have improved the way humans move and how they transport their goods from place to another.” This means that the application of innovative knowledge within the deviating systems of transportation in a community has facilitated the transportation of individuals, mechanisms in transportation has modernized the conveyance between locations. Thus, this exemplifies how the application of technological knowledge
within the general public is beneficial since it has improved the transport of people and provisions, efficiently and conveniently, in comparison to prior periods, were transportation was an arduous process, that required the essential improvement. Subsequently, according to other individuals’ perspectives they perceive technology as essential to the public since it modernizes the educational process between students and the instructors, and it as well facilitates the transportation system, conveniently available to the generation's use. It is evident that the application of technology is detrimental and corruptive to mankind, causing the massive deaths, thus decreasing the population, and destructing the buildings constructed by humanity itself. Ultimately, based on the evidence, it is conveyed that the implementation of applied science was significantly disadvantageous, given that the population of inhabitants in the city diminished, as well, the nuclear forces caused the massive obliteration of the city’s residences. According to Albert Einstein, a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, and whose work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”
When one thinks about warfare, the average mental picture is usually a movie war scene with soldiers, and planes; very rarely do people think about about the average Joe, trimming his hedge. In the short story “Grace Period”, by Will Baker, there is a man trimming his hedge outside with an electric hedge trimmer when a nuclear bomb is dropped; his wife has gone to get the mail. In “an instant [he felt as] everything stretched just slightly, a few millimeters, then contracted again” (Baker, 1989, p. 7). Although the character does not know what is happening, the reader may realize that this description is a high altitude nuclear burst. The article “Nuclear Weapon Effects”, by John Pike, describes what a nuclear bomb’s effects are and what could happen if one was dropped. Based on clues in the story and the information from the article, the reader can determine what is happening to the man and what he can expect will happen to him.
The futuristic story begins by familiarizing the reader with this house that can do pretty much anything a normal family would do, such as cook, clean, and read. Every hour a mechanical voice box stops to announce the date, weather, or event that is happening at that particular time. “There Will Come Soft Rains” is arranged chronologically, giving the effect that everything is in order, but the more you read the more you realize it’s not. At a point in the story, the mechanical voice box recites a poem by Sara Teasdale, “There Will Come Soft Rains”, about how even after human extinction the nature and animals will still remain unaffected. Even though the house is no longer occupied by anybody it still continues to carry out its day to day activities with
Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World, works in both unison and division with author Ray Bradbury, who wrote There Will Come Soft Rains. By comparing and contrasting these stories we are able to delegate how our current actions towards humanity and technology may, or even may not, affect the future Huxley and Bradbury feel strongly for. Both share a common goal to not only warn but help the reader reflect on the possible outcome of societal advancement.
Technology, one of the fastest growing industry in the world right now, it is also a characteristic that define how well and smart a country is. Simply because the ability and potential to accomplish great things that make technology really important, all this is proved through the fact that technology change the way people do things in every major, from nursing to even heavy manufacturing in factory. And there is no different in school, technology is used in student every day’s life, the most common device that every school have is computer. Computer is a powerful device that change the way student study completely, it make study more interesting, easy to understand and also allow students to do more things with their creativity.
There Will Come Soft Rains is a short story that is taking place on August 4, 2026. A nuclear event of some kind has occurred sometime prior to the story, and no signs of human life are evident. There is only one house left standing and it functions independently, and has been completing its daily tasks as if the family still lives there.
In 1945, the United States released a nuclear bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima. Nagasaki was also bombed. Thousands of people died and a quarter of a million more perished of radiation poisoning (“There Will Come Soft Rains (short story)”). With the development of nuclear weapons in the world the possibility of a nuclear war was a daily fear within people (“There Will Come Soft Rains (short story)”).
First Ray Bradbury’s book strongly connects to the social commentary of the atomic bomb. It is about how the bitterings family is forced to travel to mars and live there because a big war has struck and devastated the planet. “ One day the atomic bomb will fix earth” ( Bradbury 480) by killing earth and making it lifeless. Ray Bradbury used the atomic bomb as a big factor that had been played in this book. Because he supported that the atomic bomb is not
Barnes illustrates the devastating effects the atomic bomb caused the Japanese civilians by saying hundreds of thousands of civilians with no political ability to oppose their militarist government. Innocent women and children were vaporized, covered with radiation, horrendously burned, buried in wreckage, pierced with flying debris, and turned into burnt blobs of carbon. Neighborhoods filled with entire families were merely destroyed. The survivors confronted radiation sickness, famishment, and crippling mutilations. Survivors were also left with spiritual, emotional damage. The citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were treated as if they had a transmittable disease. Other citizens that had trouble handling the trauma caused by the bombs committed suicide. The survivors were continuously haunted by radiation. Not only did the radiation bring a lifetime of sickness, but also increased the rates of various cancers. The birth defects for pregnant women at the time jumped considerably, and although it is still unknown if birth defects are passed down through generations, survivors of the bomb and their children will continue to face anxiety over the possibilities (7). It is devastating to know the atomic bombs caused those unable to live with the negative impact of the atom bombs to commit suicide, and other innocent Japanese civilians to have to live with life-long health issues from the negative effects of radiation that will undoubtedly last for several generations. The atomic weapons were not dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to harm innocent Japanese civilians, even though this is what many people see when they look into the atomic bombs. The bombs were dropped to end World War II in the most efficient way possible at the time. Gar Alperovitz, a professor at The University of Maryland, states, “He believes United States policy makers used the weapon mainly for
The devastation brought about by the atomic bomb has caused fear among all the people that have realized the potential destructive power of its invention. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945 completely obliterated both cities (Lanouette 30). “Little Boy,” the bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed 70,000 people with an additional 66,000 injured (30-39). “Fat Man,” the bomb dropped on Nagasaki also carried its “share of America’s duty” by killing 40,000 people and injuring another 25,000 (30-39). The bombs also killed an estimated 230,000 more people from the after effects of the two explosions (30). The two bombings had opened the world’s eyes to the destructive power that could be unleashed by man.
From scientific breakthroughs that revolutionized our understanding of the world to practical inventions that changed the way we live, scientific and technological developments in the 20th century have profoundly altered nearly every aspect of our lives. We usually think of these changes as wholly positive, but when you look at the destruction caused after the first two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in 1945, this view tends to be distorted. As we can see by this horrific event, technology can be used to improve lives, but also destroy them.
