Columbus's Legacy: A Positive Legacy

To start off, Columbus’s legacy was positive because he promoted advancements in technology for the world. In the world today, there has never been the ability to connect, discover, and collaborate as it is today. His impact was so positive that one of the most important presidents in US history, Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a statement about him declaring Columbus Day, in document J you find: “The promise which Columbus's discovery gave to the world, of a new beginning in the march of human progress has been in process of fulfillment for four centuries.” This illustrates that it is undeniable that Columbus contributed to the world because he was willing to take a chance and risk his life to build bridges that would create an everlasting bond

that the world still sees today. Also when two continents start collaborating with each other it became unquestionable that the world would keep advancing at an unstoppable rate. Another statement President Roosevelt made in that same Columbus Day address said “And out of these national strains was created America to which the old world contributed so magnificently.” Again, here it is mentioned that the old world was the greatest contributor to this continent. In other words they taught their ways to a country that has inspired democracy all around the world. While some of Columbus´ actions could be deemed negative, the result of his sacrifice has only pushed humanity to its fullest potential. Just think what this continent has done:landed on the moon, created the internet, even the light bulb. All of this was thanks to Columbus’s discovery and the foundation that he provided to make the world into a hub of technology which is why he should be remembered in a more positive way.

Also Columbus left a positive legacy because he connected the continents in the world.

Here’s another quote from the acclaimed President Roosevelt about Columbus. “The courage and faith and the vision of the Genoese navigator glorify and enrich the drama of the early movement of european people to America.” This tells us how it becomes evident that Europe fell in love with the new continent, and you can’t accuse them for it. If you were a family dad and found a new job that will help your family grow indefinitely, then you found out it is occupied wouldn’t you do everything and anything to get it? It is obvious that the interest of kingdoms were about expanding, which was not incorrect. Countries today still have the same goal. Also if a kingdom expanded it means that people that have a good relationship naturally just because their nationality is the same start working together even more they will expand not only the knowledge of their nation but also of the world. It means that more of the same people are cooperating and discovering at the same time. Not only this but they now have a lot more resources in hand. Another quote that shows Columbus amazing contributions comes from Alphonse de LaMartine and he praises Columbus for bringing the virtues of civil society to the Americas. ¨So great was his influence on the destiny of the earth, that none more than he ever deserved the name of Civilizer. ¨ he was indeed a civilizer but one that had to change an already stable civilization for one that could collaborate with his. He connected our continents and brought us the civilization of Europe for us to be able to be with them and that is why it wasn't bad to change America's form of

living.

Lastly, Columbus evidently left us a positive legacy because when colonizing his intentions were only positive. Alan Brinkley, a famous historian tell us about Columbus in his paper American History: A Survey His (Columbus) voyages were inspired as much by his conviction that he was fulfilling a divine mission as by his interest in geography and trade. A strong believer in biblical prophecies, he came to see himself as a man destined to advance the coming of the millennium. “God made me the messenger of the new heaven and new earth.” he wrote near the end of his life “ and he showed me a spot where to find it.”” For someone to say such thing and that it doesn’t sound selfish you know the achievement such person made was important. Also Columbus refers to the Americas to heaven and he also was a strong believer so this was no this was no joke, heaven was a holy earth and why would he ever damage what he considered a holy place? All of his intentions were good. To prove this even more here is a letter Columbus wrote to Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492: ¨I want the natives to develop a friendly attitude toward us because I know they are a people who can be made free and converted to our Holy Faith more by love than by force.¨ For him to write this to a Queen which probably is only interested on profit is a honest example that Columbus only wanted to convert people to his faith by love, also he didn’t want to harm them, all the events that took place after him weren’t his fault and he shouldn't be accused of such anomaly. All this proves that Columbus’s legacy was good and nothing but good.
