Third world was/ is used to describe countries whose government did not take sides in the cold war. It emerged out of anti – colonial nationalism activities and was used to replace the east – west conflict with the north – south conflict.
All the countries deemed as third world has had a history of colonial rule, most were exploited through colonialism, imperialism, neo colonialism etc. while the third world countries were annexed and had direct government of a first country through colonialism; it was seen as a cost by the imperial powers rather than a benefit and one that was unavoidable. When the Age of Imperialism began in 1875, it effected Africa in many ways. Nowhere was the competition for colonies more intense than in Africa. Europeans went after North and South Africa splitting up the continent. Egypt and Sudan were taken over by Britain to obtain the Suez Canal. Imperialism helped to develop Africa’s economy and turned it into a continent of colonies.
Following World War II, the concrete nature of imperialism, or the subjection of people or groups based on a social, economical, or racial hierarchy, was seemingly in decline. For instance, India and Pakistan had both gained their independence from Britain in 1947 (p.761), and the French, though unwillingly, gave up their colonies in Vietnam (p.754), but with the development of the Cold War there became a need to ideologically separate the free “First World”, which was made up of western Europe and the United States, from the communist “Second World”, which was primarily made up by the Soviet Union. This separation unintentionally formed yet another hierarchy, and further perpetuated imperialistic notions. While the Soviets attempted to continue political imperialism in surrounding states to form a political and economic buffer from democratic nations, which due to globalization, or the mass integration of cultural and economic practices, would have been necessary to accomplish, many nations, such as the U.S., who subscribed to these democratic beliefs still counterintuitively practiced imperialism in their attempts to forcefully liberate communist nations based on the notion that their free way of life was superior to other’s communist status quo. Therefore, imperialism continued to surface through the dualist political line drawn by the Cold War, but also later through a need to stay competitive culturally and economically in a growing global community in states both subject to past colonizing nations, as well as the nations who relinquished their control over them.

The idea of Imperialism dates back to ancient times, with conquerors like Alexander The Great, going out to expand their empires as far as possible. Imperialism really began in the 16th century with the Europeans, whose advancement allowed them to set up colonies in less developed parts of the world. European countries quickly began dividing up the rest of the world, starting in Africa and Asia, and spreading into the Americas. Colonizing the world became like a game to the Europeans, who went around sucking anything of value out of underdeveloped civilizations.

The neo-colonialism theory is a theory that was developed in the 1970s during decolonization to explain why Third World countries were not developing further. Even though decolonization was occurring, it was mostly just a ruse because neo-colonialism was still occurring under the surface. Through this, the capitalist first world was holding the third world back through exploitation. Most of this exploitation came from Multi-National Corporations (MNCs).
According to Foner, the term, “Third-World”, “was invented to describe developing countries aligned with neither of the two Cold War powers and desirous of finding their own model of development between Soviet centralized economic planning and free market capitalism”(1011). The rival superpowers strived to assert their dominance in these non-aligned nations and sway them to their ideology/agenda. Both, the USSR and the US, put their imperialistic needs as a top priority, and thus seeked to involve these nations in the Cold War politically, militarily, and economically. The US was afraid of the USSR creating “power vacuums” in decolonized nations that were newly granted their independence. According to Foner, “The Soviet Union strongly supported the dissolution of Europe’s overseas empires, and communists participated in movements for colonial independence”(1012). The superpowers were eager to dissolve Europe’s empires in places, such as Southeast Asia, in order to puppeteer these nations. America responded with a policy of containment and viewed any opposition to the government as a threat to American interest, thus causing them to act upon subversion. The Cold War was an ideological struggle between Soviet Union and Eastern Europe opposing the United States and Western Europe. Liberal democracy became the First World; it was capitalistic and democratic countries with United States leading these countries. Authoritarianism became the Second World, which were communistic and autocratic countries with the Soviet Union leading the Second World countries. Lastly, anti-colonialism became the Third World; it was less economically developed where poverty is more pronounced. Even with resistance and efforts from independent states after the war, colonialism did not disappear and continued as a dominant system. It remained and changed its form, resulted in the process of globalization, which continued to control over newly independent states following World War II. Globalization, a form of colonialism, maintained power for the system over states or regions through economic terms with the development of the World Bank, and its derivation of structural adjustments. An overwhelming majority of African nations has reclaimed their independence from their European mother countries. This did not stop the Europeans from leaving a permanent mark on the continent however.
