With the increasing number of college graduates, it has become harder and harder to find a job using a degree that was earned from college due to the rising competition. Recently, there has been talk amongst many that college isn’t for everybody, and not everybody should be encouraged to attend college. Although college is important, it definitely is not essential for success in the workforce. College can be very expensive. Actually, the cost of college tuition is extremely expensive. From 1978 to 2012, college tuition has skyrocketed 1,120% (“College Tuition’s 1,120 Percent Increase”). Nowadays, it can take a whole year’s worth of salary to pay for one year of college tuition. Time and time again, there are stories of college graduates who ended up with a job that didn’t even require a college degree. They spent about 4 years, or in some cases 8 years, to receive a useless degree that they aren’t able to use to obtain a job. This time could have been used to gain money or experience in another job. In the article “20 Great Jobs Without a College Degree” on careercast.com, it is proven that “assuming you have no degree, but are willing to do something advanced, such as attending a technical school, you could earn around $30,000 a year as a beginner… That means that over 4 years, you’d earn about $120,000 , while your counterpart who's in college earns little or nothing”. If somebody was to attend college, and they fail to graduate, that would be a huge waste of time. Not only did you fail school, but you don’t even have a degree to find a job with. This happens a lot more often than most people think. According to “Why College Isn’t for Everyone”, more than 40% of those attending four year colleges full time fail to graduate, even within six years (Vedder 78). This is absolutely shocking.
