Emerging adulthood is a period of the life span between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, and college students are one of the particular groups that are experiencing the emerging adulthood. The students’ possessiveness is still not as high as mature adults’, so they cannot make a correct judgment on every situation. Since the internet spreads all around the world, more and more people, especially college students, use internet regardless of the day. However, the internet is like a double-edged sword, and it also brings negative effects. Indeed, the Internet causes students to spend less time in study and physical communication, and it also harms students physical and mental health, too.
There are many different kinds of entertainment offering on the Internet, such as video games. Some of the students get addicted to these entertainments, and they no longer try as hard as they used to try in their study. Lee Kem in his article “Games Addicted Students” states that 65% of girls and 85% of boys are game players, and one of the eight game players get addiction (para.8). Apparently, many students spend a lot of time in playing online games rather than studying. They may initially play games during leisure time, but gradually, their immature mind causes them to play games unintentionally regardless day and night. Kem further establishes his idea that many college students typically prefer playing games rather than spending time on their academics (para.9). Since high school life and college life are entirely different, many students do not adapt to this transition. The Internet makes college students have an unhealthy lifestyle, and it harms them physically and mentally. Moreover, it causes college students to spend less time in study and in-person communication. To step away from having such harmful lifestyle, college students should learn how to properly use the Internet. In addition, they also need to improve their ability to distinguish right and wrong, because the information on the Internet contains incorrect messages. Furthermore, college students should cultivate a lifetime reading habit as well. At the same time, they should attend more social activities in order to improve their interpersonal skills.

In many studies, researchers have found that the chemical dopamine is released from the brain whenever an instant alert pops up on one’s own digital device. Dopamine is a highly addictive chemical that is discharged to create pleasure. Too much Dopamine can send social media users into an addiction. The chemical dopamine is also released from the brain when someone undergoes drugs. A drug addiction and an internet addiction can be one in the same with many side-effects. Some of the side-effects of excessive internet usage on an adolescent are described in Frances E. Jensen’s book titled “The Teenage Brain”. Think about it, if a child spends more and more time on the internet, the more dopamine the brain has to release in order for the child to be satisfied. Too much of something can be a bad thing, in this case, too much exposure to the internet can be a very bad thing. Along with an inability to spend less time on social media, children often have a poor academic performance in school. This is because of the many digital distractions that smartphones can have on children. While a child or an adolescent is trying to do their homework, they often are distracted with texts from a friend, likes on an Instagram picture, or a new follower on Twitter. Many people use internet without knowing it, even I use internet without knowing that I am using too much I consider myself as an addict because I check my Facebook at least 3 times a day and text every time while I eat too. In high school, I used to use my phone in the class because it was allowed in class and teacher didn’t mind but in college I have to tell myself to not use phone in class since it is very important to achieve my goals and get a degree.

Abstract – This study focused on examining the relationship between video games and academic performance. Past studies showed us that video game does not negatively impact academic performance even though it is estimated that there is a negative relationship between these two variables. In other words, if students spend a lot of time playing video games every week, then their academic performance will be negatively impacted. In order to find out if these variables really do have an inverse relationship, 50 students at Vanier College were surveyed. Treat internet addicted students at Campus. At Santa Monica College, it’s usual to see students who are connected to the internet through their electronic devices. They can be divided to three different types of groups. One group who surfs on the internet to spend their free time. Students in this group use internet to watch a video, to check social network like Facebook, or Tweeter. The other group connect to internet to read their eBooks, or to do their online assigned homework. Finally, the last group is the students who use internet even in their class or in their studying hours. Doing more than one type of activities as the last group of students do, is multitasking which is very common among the students, and multitasking reduces student’s focus. Therefore, Santa Monica College should abolishes internet to prevent multitasking, and to avoid plagiarism which helps students to perform better, and more active in their classes.
