The purpose of college is not to prepare students to get a job, that is only a part of the whole. High school graduates or college drop-outs can get a job without going to college and some still end up with their dream job and make millions without stepping foot on college grounds. Yet college students end up graduating with either buried in student loans or debt. So, what is the purpose of going to college if student debt is waiting at the finish line? It’s because college is meant to teach students about the real world. First and foremost, look at the classes college students take, most of it contains core classes with even less classes that pertain to the actual major. As little a detail as this may seem, it means more than meets the eye. Students also need to master the ability to think as said by William Deresiewicz. What Deresiewicz means by this is not having the ability to mentally grasp certain skills, he means having the ability of skepticism. Deresiewicz explains it as “learning not to take things for granted, so you can reach your own conclusions.”. This is an important skill because not everyone thinks twice about what they may be getting into, which leads to the benefits of people who are swindlers and hackers. Students should be able to notice when teachers are trying to teach them to think about a topic based on how the lessons are taught in class, for example when the professor ask a question about a certain topic being discussed in class and expect an answer, they want the class to formulate a unique response based on their own ideals and
