College Readiness When I go to college, I plan to take my skills, and experiences with me from High School. The skills that I have now, I plan to use them in college to better myself and develop new improved skills along the way, As well as for my talents. The experiences that I have had, I plan to take in those as well so I know what is almost expected when I get to college. When I go to college I want to be better than I am in high school and work much harder because I know college won’t be easy at all. I plan to take my skills, and experiences that I have obtained to the college campus. The skills that I plan to take to the college campus could benefit me in many ways. In high school, Ive obtained a lot of skills as far as; working skills,
studying strategies, critical thinking and analyzing information.The working skills that I’ve obtained are making sure that I focus on my work and that it gets done when it’s due. The studying strategies that I’ve obtained are studying the materials over and over until I’ve learned it, not just “knowing” it. For an example, many students study for tests all the time to make sure they pass it with a good grade. But many of the students tend to forget the material after they have taken the test and learned something new. I also learned how to think more and analyze the information that is given to me. Taking notes for an example, when you take notes, you could study them how many times you need and you will also have them for future references. The experiences that I plan to take to the college campus are the experiences I have had in high school so far. The experiences that I have had are; Overcoming challenges, Mistakes that I have learned from, and Personal achievements. Overcoming my challenges has made a big difference in my high school experience because any challenging obstacles that comes my way can be handled. Even if it takes more than one or two tries, I can still work at it to be better. Another experience is learning from the mistakes that I have made in the past. I’ve made many mistakes in high school and to become a better person, I had to learn from them. I also plan to take my personal achievements to the college campus because my personal achievements made me learn how I am able to succeed in things. My achievements has had an important impact on my life because they are what got me in a successful position now. I plan to take my experiences to the college campus because they could benefit me to become more successful and focus on the right things. In Conclusion, My skills, and experiences are what I plan to take to the college campus to become a successful person in life. My skills such as; working, studying strategies, and critical thinking and analyzing information are successful things that I overcame and became a better person for my education. My experiences such as; overcoming challenges, mistakes, and personal achievements are goals that I set for myself and accomplished and also to become a better person for my education. Preparing for college now while I'm in high school is a head start on how successful I want to be. When I go to college I want to make sure I set many more goals to accomplish and obtain more skills and experiences.
As I reflect on my college life, I wonder about the choices I have made that have led me to where I am today and that will guide me into shaping who I long to become. The things I have had to sacrifice, the support and experiences I have had with family, friends, strangers and work colleagues. I don’t know what I will be doing three months or thirty years from now but I do know that I want to have new experiences. When I graduated from high school, I knew I didn’t want to be that person that moved back to the same town and stayed there for the rest of my life. I even contemplate leaving the United States in my adult life. Who really knows, maybe those cards are still in the deck. For now, I know my immediate goals include focusing on completing my college education the best I can, and moving away from my comfort zone, broadening my horizons and taken risks.
Mario Andretti once said, “Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” Andretti’s words are as true today as when he spoke them. Everyday should be a continuous journey to get to your goal. Starting off with the right step is a major component. Therefore, I chose to apply to Stanly Early College High. I believe that I have the ability to work up to Stanly Early College standards. Determination, dedication, and desire are all qualities that I have.
Although high schools have changed their standards over the years to prepare their students for the transition of college, does it actually work? In his essay “the Transition to College”, author Keith Hjortshoj explains no, because the conflict that develops when high school teacher and college professor assume upon one another is what makes the transition unpredictable. There was a survey done by students who were in a four year college that the result showed that 90 percent of students attend the first or second college of their choice. I want to make mistakes when i'm young so I can learn from them and don’t make them when i'm older. College is where people go to find out who they are and who they want to become. Experience is the best way of learning so I want to make sure I don’t limit myself to certain ideas.
I want to go to college for the wholesome intellectual stimulation and to get more involved with my community. College will be my last opportunity to do so before I enter the work force. At college I can be intellectually and academically challenged; I will be able to learn with friends who are as dedicated to learning and the pursuit of knowledge as I am. As the former president of Harvard University, Derek Bok wrote “The most obvious purpose of college education is to help students acquire information and knowledge by acquainting them with facts, theories, generalizations, principles, and the like. This purpose scarcely requires justification.” America needs educated citizens to help maintain the level of intelligence we have in society. My junior year of high school was filled with high emotions, stressful moments, and tension about where to apply to college and where I would be accepted and ultimately attend. At a “Making the Most out of your Sixth Semester” forum that year, the entire junior class experienced lectures from the school’s college resource counselors about how to prepare for this arduous battle of college admissions. The way Sue Biermert, who is the College Admissions Counselor at my high school, opened the forum was by asking a question to the parents that put everything into perspective: “How many of you parents feel like you are successful?” Every single hand shot up from the 500 parents in the auditorium. Of those that had their hands up, she asked, “How many of you parents received an Ivy League education?” Every hand went down. I could see friend’s mouths sit there in awe that getting an Ivy League education is not necessarily the greatest factor at having a good life. Even though these shocked students were the ones hoping to be accepted by Yale and Harvard, they all simultaneously recognized that going to an Ivy League school is not a guarantee for success in life. The reality about American culture is that success is the result of individual experiences that suit the needs of each person, not necessarily the prestigious institution of learning that one attends.
According to the NCES, nationwide, thirty to sixty percent of college freshmen require remedial courses in order to meet college admission requirements (2004). In Texas, 38 percent of Texas students enrolled in two-year colleges and technical schools and 24 percent of students at four-year public institutions took remedial courses during the 2006 academic year (Terry 2007). Twenty-eight percent of colleges in the United States report that students spend at least one year in remedial programs making it impossible to earn a degree in 2 or 4 years (NCES, 2003). These students have graduated from high school unprepared for participation in college courses. Unprepared student face both academic and financial barriers. Not preparing students for coursework and careers after high school is expensive. Remedial education courses are estimated to cost student one billion dollars annually. In addition, according to the ACT, despite participating in remedial classes, students who require remedial classes are significantly less likely to graduate from college (2005).
Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009),
College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
From my college experience, I hope to gain many things. Obviously college is a time that students can truly become individuals. When I attend college I will have the opportunity to become more independent and to take on new responsibilities. I have always relied on my parents for support, but at college I will be on my own and will have to push myself harder. This will help me to become more mature and will help me grow in character. I have long awaited for the time to be independent and now is the time that I shall prove myself.
The final focus I have, but certainly not the least, is to be successful in my endeavors throughout college. Seeing how much my parents cared for me by seeing them work as hard as they could just so my siblings and I could live a better life gives me all the motivation in the world to work as hard as I can to not only give back to them, but for my future children to live an even better life than I am. The lessons I have learned in my life from both my parents and life experiences have fully prepared me to excel in college. Being a part of honors classes and taking multiple advanced placement classes, I believe I am very ready for the workload to come ahead.
The article titled 'Teaching Responsibility'; deals with the issue of student preparedness after high school. The article brings up the recent case of Jonathan Govias who is suing his private high school stating that the school did not prepare him for university. The article goes on to give two examples, one in Virginia and one in Ontario of how these types of problems are being dealt with. The editor agrees s that the school system should be held more responsible for its graduates, but makes it clear that lawyers only complicate matters. I believe that Jonathan Govias' case should be heard in a court of law due to the fact that schools have a certain responsibility and if it is not met then something needs to be done about it. I am in total disagreement with the Ontario's school plan to get rid of this problem and am a total fan of the Virginia pilot project, because unlike the Ontario plan they are actually looking to help the students and not their own pockets.
College is going to start my own life on a foot that is ready to leap because my career is going to take off right out of the gate. All-in-all I’m going to college for three main reasons. My immediate family is a reason because I want them to be proud of me for doing something right for once. My future family is also one because it’s a big part of my life that I want to be happy and always feel comfortable. Finally for my personal financial well-being, so I can be able to treat myself to all the luxuries I want for myself. Going back to line one, all of these things are a part of my future. Isn’t that what college is for after all, to prepare people for their own futures and what they bring? A university is not my future, it’s only the beginning of it.
