If anyone has ever ran Track and Field then they will know truly how strange of a sport it is. The whole goal of the sport is to see how fast you can run in a circle, how high you can jump or how far you can throw. Compared to other other sports it’s really simple and looks boring, but its is this simplicity that I think makes it so appealing. The basis of Track is how far you can push the human body with the three basic things it does run, jump, and throw. Track and Field is not a team sport everyone competes in their own events; with this you a divide in the type of people. The two biggest groups being sprinters and distance runners, both athletes but in two very different ways.
They even train very differently, a normal day for a sprinter

For a sprinter it is all about Nike if they can get any clothing with a Nike logo on it then they will buy it. They will have Nike training shoes, Nike spikes (the clets you run in), the latest Nike socks, and Nike shorts. So in the end they just look like a walking Nike billboard. On the other side the distance runners won’t have any logo on them but will have as much tie dye as possible from their shoes to the shirt on their back. So when you go to a Track meet all you see is Nike and hippies walking around …show more content…
The whole driving force for a sprinter is that rush of race day; getting in your blocks and staring down the track to your end goal. The rush of the sound of the gun and using every ounce of your energy in a matter of seconds. That is why a sprinter will go through pain of practice every day. On the other hand a distance runner could care less about meets and competition. For them there is two reasons to run track one is they just flat out enjoy running for some strange reason. Even on off days you will find them out running on the streets for fun. The other is the social aspect of it everyone there is there for the same reasons so all distance runners get along pretty well with each other. Unlike sprinters when everyone else is your enemy; who you would like nothing more than to see trip out of the
They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares" (603). This quotation shows that running is not always competition, but it helps runners overcome their
In conclusion, cross country is way more inferior to track & field. There are many reasons why, that is if you have the same opinion as mine. Truly if I wouldn’t think that cross country is pre-season training for track, I would probably care less about it or be less committed to it.
The following essay will discuss the argument that the current pre-dominance of black athletes in the world of sprinting is a social and not a racial phenomenon. Firstly the article will examine the physical differences between black and white athletes. Secondly, this article will discuss stereotypical beliefs in the world of sport. This essay will give an objective examination of the above issues and to challenge beliefs held and conveyed by individuals.
Men and women who chose to engage in sports from which they would traditionally be discouraged because of their gender, particularly as professionals, redefine the sport. The social and cultural "costs" are not the result of the individual's participation, but rather the way in which sports have been socially, politically, and economically constructed. Gender is only one of the few ways in which people are categorized according to their proficiency for some athletic activities. Race and class are also factors which may prevent individuals from engaging in sports that have been traditionally excluded to them. Socially constructed notions of race, class, and sexuality compound the way in which the history of sports has developed. For example, black women athletes may be more accepted in certain sports than in others, i.e. black women in the WNBA might seem as less an anomaly for black women than for white women, and yet the success of the Williams sisters in tennis may seem more out of the ordinary for many Americans than the success of their white counterparts. Race, class, sex, and sexuality are the operative notions in which certain sports are less "traditional" for certain groups.
With all these misconceptions and stereotypes towards the track athletes it can be hurtful at times for them because they’re being told blind assumptions which can lead to anger. Though some of the track athletes fit the different stereotypes, they shouldn’t be given these labels for doing what they love because they work and train hard everyday all for the passion of the sport track and field.
Its not quite easy to be a successful track runner. You have to be devoted enough to observe your eating habits, be able to weightlift, and constantly practice plyometric drills. Plyometrics are exercises used to strengthen leg muscles; which can include regular
The Running Boom of the 1970s was when running for sport was fully acceptable and even popular. Before the the 1970s, somebody who was seen running at night by himself with no particular destination was met with suspicion. It was also believed that women could do permanent harm to themselves by running more than one mile. So it makes you wonder what exactly happened to change all this? I plan to investigate this topic by studying the athletes who ran distance at this point in time and what their relationship to the public was. I also plan on researching the person who made exercise popular as well as how athletic companies fanned the fire. I will research these topics by reading books from my local library, watching videos, as well as accessing online forums.
Cross country and track to an outsider, they can only be seen as running. Well, to a student of the sport they are both so much more. Runners are gathered to both, but there are plenty of variations between the two. Although I love both of these sports, if I had to side with one, I would choose track. These can commonly be seen in training, races, and people.
Growing up, I played just about every sport our small town provided: soccer, basketball, baseball, football, boxing, golf, you name it. There was only one sport that I had yet to embark upon: running; however, during my seventh grade year, I decided to try it out, and it ended up being a great decision. From the beginning, the one thing that drew me in was the atmosphere. All of the older runners on the team really embraced us younger runners, despite our youth and immaturity. As a seventh grade kid not really knowing what to expect participating in a varsity sport, this gesture really meant a lot, and it is one of the main reasons that I fell in love with the sport. I stayed with this sport throughout my high school career, and now that I am older, I have the opportunity of being on the other side of the spectrum. My teammates and I love having the middle school kids on the team, and I try my best to ensure that they have a similar experience to the one I had just five short years ago.
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
“A race is like a work of art that people can look at and be affected by in as many ways as they’re capable of understanding.”(70) Here the author quotes Steve Prefontaine, and in this quote it explains that humans can enjoy and appreciate running with there minds and feeling, unlike animals. “I’m moved by others dreams and by their devotion and courage in the pursuit of excellence. I get choked up when I see a kid or anyone else, fighting against hopeless odds. Someone who goes out there to run the lonely roads with a dream in the heart, a gleam in the eye, and a goal in mind.”(74) Then, later on the author concludes that completing a race is not about having a fit and healthy body, but a dream, an “antelope”, or a goal in mind. To back that up, is the mental courage to fight for your dream, your
Athletics is a sport that involves track and field events, running races, jumping and throwing which require physical skills. So to be recognized in any of these events is a glory. In this video, I will share with you the 5 fastest athletes in the world.
Being a college athlete is very tiring. College athletes have to endure a ton of things. From six AM practices, to midnight study sessions, being a college athlete is hard. To be a college athlete, the athlete has to be prepared to get used to getting little to no sleep. With early morning practices, class and then studying, with possibly a lifting session, a college athlete needs to be prepared to be pushed not only physically, but also mentally. To be a college athlete it takes a lot of mental toughness. A college athlete has to find it in them to do whatever it takes to study for all of their classes, meaning staying up until necessary, and then waking up the next morning to get up and practice. This is one of the hardest things for college athletes. Mental toughness is a whole other level when it involves sleep. Where one would say, “No. It is fine. I will just wing the test. I am too tired to study.” Or, “I will just study in the morning.” Athletes have to be prepared to break mental boundaries and drive themselves to success. They have to realize that other things are more important and that sleep will have to wait. Megan, a
it’s the same thing!” This response given by multiple people truly enrages the dedicated athlete who eats, sleeps, and breathes these two very different sports (like me). Track and field and cross country take place in different seasons, different activities take place in each sport, along with a different team environment. But, in the questioned subject’s defense, Track and field and cross
